“the season of the witch.”
“i wanted nothing but silence, black woods, decay, cold winds; to lie twisted and turned like a serpent, to be in unison with a dying earth.”
"death season” by segovia amil
it’s been a while since my best friend erika and i did a photoshoot. the last one we did was a almost exactly a year ago; way too long for artistic minds to be apart. i’ve been thinking of a “witch” idea for quite some time. the initial idea was to picture a witch drowning, referencing the salem witch trials and the nirvana song, “serve the servants” in which kurt sings: “if she floats than she is not, a witch like we had thought.” that idea was scrapped though, since we couldn't find the right time, props, location, etc. so, we settled for our favorite woods location.
as always, erika did a great job on her wardrobe. black dress, hanging jewelry, black nails...the make-up was great too: pale skin contrast against black and blue lipstick and eye shadow, wavy hair with blueish and purple highlights. we had a few props we brought along too, to make it more spooky, just to add to the effect as well as blacking her eyes out and adding fake blood coming from her mouth. this is certainly something i would not like to see walking through the woods at night. or during the day for that matter. it gives me goose bumps just looking them.
on the other hand, we have the poem. the poem is something i found online while looking for old witch related documents and stories about the witch trials and possession. not sure why “death season” was tagged while searching for these things, but i read over some of segovia amil’s other poems and she now has a new fan. they are short, to the point, beautiful and dark. perfect as a sidenote to this photoshoot we did.  overall happy with the outcome of this pojsect and hopefully it won’t be too long before we get together for another one.
enjoy...and sweet nightmares.

the summer sessions: season three, sessions 21-30.
a few years ago, i decided to do this little project named, “the summer sessions.” it was basically started for me to push myself to the max on my bike during the summer time. the summers in south carolina can be pretty brutal: 100+ degree heat index, winds from hell, a downpour out of nowhere...
this year, i wanted to change it up a little and push myself even further. how i did this was through a little thing called a “century ride.” technically, a century ride is 100 miles or more in 12 hours or less. the initial goal was to do one every weekend. after doing the first, i knew the weekly goal was not going to happen. then i thought maybe bi-weekly...nope. and once a month wasn't going to cut it. so, i just decided with an even 10. i came close, but it still didn’t happen either.
summer officially started on june 21st and ended on september 22nd. these are the summer sessions recorded (daily commutes, fun rides, events, etc. are excluded):
session one: the ghost bike tour + century ride I 101.2 miles session two: battery2beach + century ride II 101.6 miles session three: rockville + century ride III 101.2 miles session four: bike asheville (days 1-3: 71.8 miles (6,399 feet in elevation made up for the miles) session five: lake moultrie + century ride IV 115.4 miles session six: edisto island and beach + century ride V 117.8 miles session seven: daniel island + century ride VI 101.7 miles session eight: francis marion national forest + century ride VII 130.4 miles session nine: TNBR ride 51.7 miles (though not a century ride, it deserved a spot. fucking fantastic time with great people) session ten: folly beach finale 52.8 miles (this was spur of the moment, plus a test ride without the camelbak i usually wear. i was nervous.)
the reason i did this blog is because i recently came across my notes app and found something i typed before summer started. i can tell i was already hyped to start. this is my manifesto:
I. go somewhere new. there are many small towns and cities in this state. venture out; explore them all. try not to do past summer sessions. if you do, make them “extended versions." never go over the same route twice: once you get to your destination, go on a different route on the way back home. try not to cross the same path, unless absolutely necessary. i.e. only one way out. once again: explore.
II. sunrise to sunset: the summer sessions can last for hours at anytime. early to rise to avoid traffic. late to start to beat the heat.
III. use strava and take a picture. no one is going to believe how far you’ve gone unless you have proof. show them how crazy you are.
IV. a new challenge: only use harder gears, stand up going over bridges, no booze breaks until after your challenge.
V. a new challenge II: each ride will be a ride a century ride. there may be some sessions where you don’t meet 100 miles, so once you're finished with your session and on your way home, take the longer route to add up those bonus miles. you know you can do it. mind over matter: it’s going to be tough, it’s going to be hot, you will feel fatigued, you will be dehydrated. bike smart. don’t give up. that epsom salt bath and icy cold beer is your trophy waiting for you back at home.
VI. exceptions: each ride by myself will be a century ride; however, summer sessions will also include events: local rides, races, alleycats, etc. that will not be a century ride. have fun with friends, enjoy life, have a good time. you only live once.
reading this now, i pretty much stuck with the plan, with VI being an exception. otherwise, i would’ve had 20+ sessions in my book. 2017 was a great year for cycling. as stated above, i went on some local rides, did a couple races, a couple alleycats, met some new friends, enjoyed life and definitely had a good time.
here’s to next year.

“destino” by salvador dali and walt disney.
this past sunday, i made a getaway to columbia, south carolina. the main reason for the mini-trip was to visit the columbia museum of art, where they had a salvador dali exhibit on display. “fantastical fairytales” included paintings by dali for story books, which included “alice in wonderland,” “don quixote” and many short stories by hans christian andersen.
while walking through to end of the exhibit, i noticed this animated film playing on a loop. reading the information templet next to the screen, i learned that dali and disney collaborated to make a short animated film together. i never knew this existed. it was apparently shelved due to lack of funding because of WWII and laid dormant until the late 1990′s where it was rediscovered and put together by disney’s nephew.
a short, yet sweet film clocking in just over 6 minutes, it is dali’s work in a fluid and animated form, involving traditional and computer animation. a nice treat for any dali fan, including myself.

STILL WE RISE. writers resist: poetry for democracy.
my friend matt foley, a local teacher and poet, has been hosting quite a few shows around the charleston area for quite some time. i’ve been to a few of them, but this past tuesday was quite different and my overall favorite slam. besides the great line-up of poets and speakers, there were local organizations on hand to promote what they stood for:
girls rock charleston, black lives matter, LGBT, people against rape, charleston homeless, center for women and the deep southern resistance.
in between each poet going up to speak their minds, a member of each organization went up to speak theirs as well. i never knew there was so much to say for so many things in our small city.
it was also an emotional night as well: tears were flowing, rage ensued and laughter made it at ease. poets expressed how they felt about people in general, the military, immigration, the color of their skin, and of course, the main course: trump. my favorite poet of the night was a 9th grade student that was introduced by her teacher. it takes a lot of courage to speak your mind in front of strangers, and this young girl had it...totally blew me away. i myself, couldn’t have enough courage to do what she did.
if you have never been to a spoken word show before, give it a shot. it beats any stupid reality TV show or wasting hours away on facebook and youtube, watching worthless shit.

ann marie as ophelia. hair and make-up by erika syphrett.
william shakespeare’s, “hamlet.” ACT IV: ophelia’s death
“there, on the pendent boughs her coronet weeds clambering to hang, an envious sliver broke; when down her weedy trophies and herself fell in the weeping brook. her clothes spread wide; and, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up: which time she chanted snatches of old tunes; as one incapable of her own distress, or like a creature native and indued unto that element: but long it could not be till that her garments, heavy with their drink, pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay to muddy death.”
