Okay okay listen we all know that regulus was the “good kid” - the one who never spoke up, the one who took punishment with no argument, the one who always kept his head down and did what he was told to survive in that house

But listen the thing about these good kids is that they have a limit. And when they finally finally reach it they fucking snap. You thought Sirius was bad? Oh Regulus is just getting started. He kills his dad. Poisons his mom and gifts her with a long slow and painful death. Figures the dark lords horcruxes and kills one of them - all while writing a fuck you letter to him to remind him he was bested by a 17 year old.

when he was a kid, remus considered his biggest fear to be that full moon. he was a little kid, he didn’t understand that he wasn’t really afraid of the moon itself but of the monster the moon brought to the surface. every month he was filled with dread, knowing that this moon would make him lose control and tear at himself and everything around him.

when he got to hogwarts, he learned about boggarts. while his peers were joking and teasing about each others biggest fears and what they would see, remus hid away. what would they think when they saw he was afraid of the full moon? would they think he was a child scared of the dark? or would they realize what a monster he really was? when his new friends, james, sirius, and peter went out one night to go find boggarts to face their fears like the true gryffindors they were, remus feigned sick. they never wanted to push him when he was sick. he knew what his fear was, there was no need to face it anymore than he had to.

what surprised remus when he got to his fifth year and he had no choice but to face his boggart in defense against the dark arts, was not seeing the full moon shining in the middle of the dusty class. instead, he saw his friends laying on the floor with no more life left in their eyes. it wasn’t a brutal, bloody murder scene that everyone had to witness, just three bodies lying helpless on the floor.

with his three friends by his side, he didn’t have to fear the full moon or the monster it brought out. not as much. he had three furry friends to help the monster stay docile and, if they were to be believed, even playful. he spent so much of his life drowning in fear of this beast that he didn’t realize that fear was fading. he didn’t look forward to the full moon, but he dreaded it less. he woke up in less pain and without soaked in blood. it became manageable, rather than fearful. he wasn’t as afraid of it anymore. instead, he was introduced to a new fear of loss and loneliness. without his three friends by his side, the monster could take back over. he would be left with nothing in the world and there was nothing he hated more than that thought. his friends kept him human (even if they did this by becoming less human) and it wasn’t until he saw their three dead bodies that he realized how much he needed them. how scared he was to lose them.

the next time he saw a boggart was when he started teaching at hogwarts. he had no intention of subjecting himself to that thing again, he refused to see his friends dead after already losing them. but when harry was in trouble, he thought about what james would do. what sirius would do if it were him. he jumped in front of the boy that he couldn’t look at for too long without being reminded of his pain and faced the pain that the boy reminded him of. except he didn’t see three dead bodies. he saw the full moon shining in the middle of a dusty classroom.

you see, you can’t be scared of something that already came true. james was dead, taking all the light in the world with him. sirius was locked away, never going to be able to overcome the burden of his family name. and peter was a traitor, something they never expected. he didn’t need to fear it because it already came true. each day he was being dragged down by the loss and loneliness. now he had to face the monster on his own and there was nothing else that scared him as much as that.

Can you imagine how flustered James would be when he and Regulus start dating and Regulus starts actually being really affectionate and soft with him?

Like of course Regulus still teasingly bullies him (it’s one of his love languages and James loves it dw) but when he starts also complimenting him and giving him random hugs and stuff? James would melt and blush and not know how to respond.

And Regulus would love the fact he can shut James up better than anyone so he’d just do it all the time. Everyone round Hogwarts would be so confused about how The Regulus Black, who seemingly only had two moods: indifference and annoyance, suddenly started being so sweet and soft to James Potter.

He’d chase him down the halls when he forgot a textbook in his room calling for his “Sunshine” and James would be speed walking away blushing the entire time but absolutely adoring the attention at the same time.
