G O R I L L A Z
Everyone lost their collective minds during the week when statements came out saying Gorillaz new music.
Featuring feature rapper du jour Vince Staples (see him with Flume on this little beaut)
youtube
Hopping on a twisted flow that is his characteristic, but I think features too much of the chorus "the sky is fallin baby/drop that ass fore it crash" which I don’t mind but I feel die hard Gorillaz fans and those not au fait with Mistah Vince may not  like. But I implore you to look a little deeper. He is an accomplished and clever lyricist making not so subtle social commentary , "you can live your dreams long as you don’t look like me/be a puppet on a string hanging from a fucking tree".

We got your recovery covered after last weekend!!!
Tumblr media
If you think this a decent cover by @Griselda, check out the cover we have for you here at Jamforest HQ.
Goosed is not the word after the weekend that was in it so we hope these will ease you onto the week.
youtube
The already fab ‘Jealous’ by Labrinth is given a dreamy dressing down by one of my faves Jessie Ware who gets extra points by throwing in some Kanye lyrics at the end.
youtube
Aussie folk singer Julia Jacklin slows the tempo way down on this Strokes classic and puts the spotlight on the beautiful lyrics.
My favourite of her original is Dont Let the Kids Win but leave it off unless you need a solid cry, and if you do this is your only man.
youtube
A little more upbeat with this offering from another Aussie, Chet Fakers covering of Chi towns own Sonia Dada. It doesn’t differ a whole bunch from the original but if it aint broke, don’t fix it.
I openly don’t like punk music. I can’t lie, I respect the movement and the ideals behind it but the music I cant get on board with. You won’t ever catch me wearing a forty euro Dead Kennedys t-shirt from Topshop. That being said, my favourite band the Red Hot Chilli Peppers covered Havana Affair by the Ramones and its totally transformed. This is them at Slane in 2003..check John out hitting those high notes.
youtube
Two of the greats combined, Hozier covering Van the Man. This song gives me the chills and wanderlust and I just want to hop on a plane and never return. Which is ideal on a Monday wrecked tired trying to do college work. An absolute gem of a song.
youtube
Another one for the Wanderlust, dreaming of unknown bedrooms in unknown cities with the smell of somewhere else in your nose. Could you cope with The Lumineers covering Dylan?
Another delight from them is Aint Nobodies Problem. You’re WELCOME PAL.
Slipping into something a little more comfortable with Ben Harpers cover of the late great Marvin Gayes Sexual Healing. This is from his fantastic live album Live on Mars that I had on nonstop when I was seventeen..ah better times.
Staying a little shexxxeee, is January by Paolo Nutini. I am unsure as to whether this is a cover or just an unreleased track (it has never turned up on any releases) but nevertheless it is going on the list because I love it.
A melancholy reimagining of Nina Simones reggae influenced original, a beautiful version of Baltimore by the sublime Lianne Le Havas
Hope these help cutting those corners todays. PEACE

Shit Shirt Sundays Playlist
Tumblr media
The shit shirts. You know the ones that appeal to you on some level but they’re a bit out there, and would people look at you walking down the street rocking it under skinny jeans somma dem air force ones or Nike air Max or the classic Reebok classic? Or are you gonna look cooler than being cool ice cold?
Tis risky business
Trendy dickhead, shuffling wannabe or avant garde hipster? Are you wearing your Mam’s Easter Sunday shirt or did you copy it from Nine Crows?
Perhaps we’ll never know.
However, the soundtrack to aforementioned walk (strut) down the street is unquestionably kool. Have a look... cause you know... you probably haven’t heard of them...
Here’s a taster of whats in store, follow the links for the full playlist.

Our emoji reaction to MAGGIE ROGERSÂ đŸ™‚đŸ™‚đŸ™‚đŸ™‚đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜€đŸ˜€đŸ˜€đŸ˜€đŸ˜€đŸ˜đŸ˜đŸ˜đŸ˜đŸ˜
Close enough to Pharrell’s reaction if you ask me!
Tumblr media
Okay so I may be a few months late to the Maggie Rogers party but I don’t care...it’s never too late to arrive to a party!!! In case you, like me had never heard of her until today boy are you in for a treat!!! Let me give you the low down.
Pharrell Williams gave a Masterclass at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts back in February 2016, where he critiqued the students work.
June 1st the video of Maggie’s masterclass moment with Pharrell goes viral....
Why you ask??? Let me show you....
youtube
How she speaks about music before her song is played is inspiring, she clearly appreciates music and all it can offer! It was during a study abroad in France that she fell in love with electronic music and came to understand the ways rhythm and lyrics can best complement each other. It broke her out of her folk mode. “When I got to NYU, I had applied based on playing folk music and they said ‘you’re the banjo girl,’ so I thought ‘OK, I’m the banjo girl,’” she says.
In the clip above she comes across so sure of herself and her music. You can see that she is a living part of her music even the way she bops along to her beat only giving a side glance to Pharrell once in awhile. She is happy just listening to her song than gauging his reaction, laughing when she realises he is completely enamoured by it.
Tumblr media
On the surface this track is dance pop, but her explanation up front of how she came to it and how her influences add to it revealed so much. Even her look and attitude shows how much this girl is in it for the music. The other kids all had some kind of pop star “look” going on, but not Maggie. She comes across all about the music.
This week, Rogers releases her EP called Now That the Light Is Fading, featuring the finished version of "Alaska."

Neo Soul & Funk
Tumblr media
Don’t call it a comeback, I been here for years
says the genre of funk and soul but we on some new wave shit today, hence the neo, so you know I’m college educated.
Kicking us off is St. Paul & the Broken Bones a.k.a  “Dammmmmn white boy can sing”, I’m allowed to say that because I too, am white ( that’s how it works?)
Tumblr media
Hailing from Birmingham Alabama, the six piece formed in 2012 and released an E.P. the following year. Their first album, Half the City, was produced by Ben Tanner from Alabama Shakes and catapulted them to both popular and critical acclaim and led to performances on indie favourites KEXP and N.P.R.’s tiny desk concert. Big band horns, tight precise drumming, guitars bringing serious funk, soulful tender keys and moving lyrics (“We put on our Sunday best/we live our quiet mess”) belted out by vocalist Paul Janeways powerhouse voice all combine to a beautiful sucker punch of a sound. They released Sea of Noise in September of last year and are currently touring the States and Australia before coming to Europe. Unfortunately, there are no Irish shows but they are playing in London and with tickets only thirty quid, I think it is well worth the trip. You can buy tickets here.
There are many examples of their finery to show you, but my current favourites are Like a Mighty River Baby  from the first album.
“She is just a tired girl / and I am just a dirty boy / and we just trying to make it through..”
And Il Be Your Woman, as of yet unreleased from the new album, here is a gorgeous version from The Mahogany Sessions
“Oh sweet girl how you rescue me / from the sirens of the field..why do we do it this way? I can’t bury your pain”
Would you be able?
Next up is Leon Bridges, hailing from Fort Worth Texas, he has been lauded as the second coming of Sam Cooke..and I have to say in this case definitely do believe the hype.
Tumblr media
Coming Home  was his breakout hit and it still sounds good almost three years later.
“The world leaves a bitter taste in my mouth girl/you’re the only one that I want/ I wanna be around girl”
Listening to River feels like a homecoming from a trip you weren’t aware you had taken, the concept of redemption is teased out in a carefully hopeful narrative comprised of lyrics that look deceptively simple. It makes me feel like it is all going to work out just fine. Bridges is gospel dipped in nostalgia that isn’t try hard but powerfully genuine. His live performances are masterful, his voice is melted velvet and his dancing is a joy to behold.
He goes from heartfelt tender songs, to the upbeat, swinging Smooth Sailing  that conjure images of swishing skirts in a packed sweating dancehall, a song called Twisting and Grooving is of a similar feel and the fact that he wrote it about how his grandparents met only completes the look.
An accomplished guitarist he has filled out his sound with the addition of the impeccable Brittni Jessie whose vocals straddle the fine line between subtlety and presence, a saxophonist and a lead guitarist.
This all may sound very over the top and gushing but what a talent. I just can’t keep it in the pants for Bridges. Next up we have Anderson .Paak.
Tumblr media
Dare I say the best Dre protĂ©gĂ©e since Marshall. An unbelievable drummer and soul singer he is making serious waves. He was left homeless with his wife and child after being suddenly let go from his job at a marijuana farm in 2011, he made a quick comeback (don’t call it a comeback) with the help of Shafiq Husayn of Sa Ra who employed him as an assistant he went on to be the tour drummer for American Idol winner Hailey Reinhart and released his first album Malibu, which is well worth checking out. He released the Grammy nominated Venice last year, announced he was signed to Dr. Dres aftermath label and appeared on no less than six songs on Dre’s album and two on the Games album. My favourite collaboration so far is Dang with Mac Miller.
My top picks from him include Might Be ,  Put Me Thru &  Come Down, but to be fair both his albums are all killer no filler so worth checking out.
Childish Gambino
Tumblr media
Childish Gambino needs no introduction but his new album is a complete departure from his previous stuff, and so warrants a spot on our list he’s coming with the funk is dirtier than the bottom of a bag of spuds. I have always had big love for the Donald (never thought I would say that) but he has truly outdone himself with this transcendent affair. The whole album is ridiculously good but Redbone in particular is an absolute banger.

Lisa Hannigan 'Undertow'
Tumblr media
Lisa Hannigan’s latest album ‘At Swim’ has been nothing short of amazing.
As a massive Hannigan fan from day one from her first album ‘Sea Sew’ 2008 to ‘Passenger’ 2011, so, when I saw Aaaron Dessner guitarist of The National was producing and helping collaborate on the album I knew I would immediately love it!!!
Spoiler alert: ‘The National’ are my favourite band.
The record follows the double-platinum, Mercury and Choice Music Prize -nominated debut of “Sea Sew”, with tracks such as ‘Pistashio’, ‘Lille’ and ‘I don’t know’. And 2011’s “Passenger” which charted #1 and earned Lisa a second Choice Music Prize nomination. It took five years for Lisa to make ‘At Swim’ and while the album is in part about homesickness and isolation, it’s also about love. Lisa is quoted as describing the lyrical imagery on this album as being adrift, of existing in the world without a steering wheel, of being controlled by outside forces.
In her new video for "Undertow," these feelings are made clear as we see Lisa in slow motion surrounded by feathers with an effect of water engulfing her and everything around her in reverse, instilling a sense of urgency, a feeling of being submerged and falling, all captured beautifully. We were lucky enough to catch the ‘At Swim’ Album Launch Tour at the Lime Tree Theatre Limerick in December where Lisa told the crowd that in order to capture this sense of floating she learned the song backwards for the video and she gave us a rendition of it in reverse there and then.
"I want to swim in your current
Carry me out, up and away
I want to float on every word you say."
youtube
As one of my favourite songs from the album the video for ‘Undertow’ does not disappoint! I was hooked on my first listen of this atmospheric song and French director Alden Volney does not disappoint. Having previously directed Villagers ‘Occupy your mind’ and ‘Nothing Arrived’ it comes as no surprise that Lisa and Alden were a good fit and have created such a beautiful video. An incredible beauty and peace radiates from her music and the video like the song is a captivating poignant piece as elegant as Lisa herself.
‘At Swim’ was released last summer and it was well worth the writers block and I will gladly wait another five years for her next album if it is as stunning as this one. So if you haven’t listened to it yet what are you waiting for!!!
Lisa’s U.S. tour begins in February and will see an appearance on Late Night with James Corden on February 14th, here’s hoping for carpool karaoke!!!

| ITS COMPTON IN THE HOUSE |
Tumblr media
Kendrick Lamar;
arguably Comptons finest son (what up Jayceon). I have been a fan since I heard the title track from his sophomore album, Good Kid m.A.A.d city.
I could lie and say I knew him from the jump, wax lyrical about his mixtapes and his first album, Section 8.0, but in truth I came to all that after listening to Good Kid m.A.A.d city, it was everywhere in 2012, it was named the best album of 2012 by BBC, Complex, New York and Pitchfork
It reminded me of illMatic, in so far as I thought it was an instant classic, and it took you right into the belly of the beast of the hood, the Compton streets where Lamar was raised.
Punctuated with dialogue laden samples, “Where yo Grama stay at?” “These kids ready to eat, bring back them food stamps” it was a tour de force, a combination of intelligent reflection of life of the disenfranchised and switched up with the chilled joints like “The Recipe” & “Bitch Don’t Kill my Vibe”, and the sultry Drake collaboration, “Poetic Justice” as soon as the subject matter got too heavy. An all-rounder if ever I heard it.
When I found the wealth of material that preceded this release, it was like finding a can of Coke in the fridge after a night out. Joyous stuff indeed.
His next release, to pimp a Butterfly was an anomaly, artistic progression at its finest.
Political consciousness, the complicated factors of black identity (not that I’d know) teased out over jazz (what?) in a multi layered musical continuity.
It is not immediately enjoyable, nor is it a ‘grower’ but it is important. Kendrick expands his sound and examines themes of straddling the thug life with the artistic life, which is seriously minimising it, that seems far more genuine (dare I say it) than Pac could ever do it. [1]
It engages the listener and has them scratching their heads.
Which is what art is all about. And haters of it will be silenced as it was just announced that to Pimp a Butterfly will be admitted to the Harvard ‘these are the breaks’ hip hop archive, joining Nas Illmatic, (see I called it) Lauryn Hills the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and ATCQ The Low End Theory. I actually think it might be a little premature considering there is only two hundred spots in total. But shur look.. this is it.
I could be here all day but this is all well traversed territory. What I want to talk about is his appearances.
The first that hit me hard was F**kin Problems with New York’s new wave g.o.a.t.s ASAP Rocky. Mmm mm, Daddy like.
Loathe as I am to be bumpin’ some superficial stuff like that I cannot deny its catchy AF, its pop rap and it is undeniably good.
It was until last year I reconsidered how often he contributed verses and a lot of it was non hip hop music, Sia, Taylor Swift Maroon Five to name but a few.
Parlaying his presence to a wider consciousness without diluting his integrity. It is a far cry from pops rent a rapper scene (reference any verse that Tyga, vomit face emoji, has appeared on) that we have been thus far subjected to.
The following are some of his lesser known collaborations that I think are worth a lend of your ear.
Sidewalks: The Weeknd
youtube
In an album laden with contributors, indicative of The Weeknds newly liberated flow that still contains some of his old secretive egotistical style, albeit somewhat watered down.
Kendrick combines a simple yet effective hook Say/Say/Say with a speedy flow that comes full circle referencing the cosmos to weave in Starboy. You mad clever son!
God is Fair, Sexy Nasty: Mac Miller
youtube
This is actually a deadly album, well worth checking out in its entirety. I am not a huge fan of Mac Miller, he is a little too poppy for me and I find his verses bland (although I said the same about Asher Roth and look how he turned that all around). This album is tightly produced with a psychedelic vibe, hip hop meets Stone Roses not a million miles from A.S.A.P. Rockys second album or Frank Oceans for that matter so I am definitely feeling it AND some decent appearances by Ty Dolla Sign and my new fave Anderson .Paak. This is dreamy Kendrick at his best, it reminds me of Poetic Justice, big fan.
Collard Greens: Schoolboy Q
youtube
This beat goes off, no bother to Kendrick he picks up the pace, throwing a little Espanol to make it interesting upping the arrogance to fit into Schoolboy Q’s self centred/ drug centred narrative and somehow it does not seem disingenuous.
The New Cupid: BJ The Chicago Kid
youtube
Chi town stand up! I only found this whilst researching this article. Crumbling soul over some old school horns, a little harp and tender ass drums all carefully and delicately put together over the sounds of “Cupids too busy in the club” using Raphael Saadiqs classic Oh Girl. Lamar is used subtly throughout the song repeating hook just audible enough to be certain it is Kendrick. He riffs on modern love As I play out the Commodores/my faith destroyed/My heart don't work, I'm unemployed/The feeling is void/don't know what I need/Some pussy, some paper/some counseling/Maybe some Henny, some weed.
This song has many elements that make it great but Kendrick plays a big role.
You’re welcome,,you all welcome! (KanYe voice)

Calling all EDM fans.
Meet self-taught Irish music producer/DJ David Sheerin, AKA "Shee." A talented 20 year old from Killarney, Co. Kerry.
Tumblr media
We sat down for an interview with up and coming Irish artist ‘Shee’ and we are excited to hear and learn more about him and you should be too. 2016 was a big year for ‘Shee’. He was given residency in Limericks biggest club "Habitat" where he runs a popular night called "Touch Of Techno".
This year also saw some big releases for ‘Shee’ such as his remix of "Kai Straw - Friction" and his dance track "We are One" with Emma Cotter, which got a huge response around Ireland. Download “We are One” for free over on his SoundCloud account.
youtube
David also held a regular spot for 3 months over in San Francisco in "Club X", a popular EDM nightclub. Towards the end of this year he will have a number of tracks premiered at ADE, due for release soon.
Who are your influences?
“I have so many influences that if I named them off this article it would go on forever! But at the moment I like to sample a lot of old 80's disco records and jazz - funk records. It’s fun to sit down and go through a playlist of old stuff that you wouldn't hear nowadays. I also like to listen to artists outside of House and Techno. I listen to a lot of Flume because the way he produces is so much different to everyone else's.”
What are your future plans?
“My future plans are simple enough, to make music. I am still learning every time I sit down to produce which I love. I want to get my music out to people around Ireland and the world and I want people to be able to listen to a song without knowing who the artist is and then recognising that it is mine. Djing wise I want to get around Ireland more. Hopefully by the end of 2017 I will be able to have a small tour around Ireland.”
Upcoming gigs:
Catch ‘Shee’ in Limerick on the 26th of January after a sold out gig in Cork on the 19th at the Block Presents: The Villagers Refreshers 'Festival'. ‘Shee’ has more gigs in Letterkenny and Killarney which will be announced soon so keep an eye on his Facebook page.
His track “Something Different About You” is another track to take note of. Featuring the talented vocals of his sister Kayleigh Sheerin. This track is available for free download over on his SoundCloud account.

New Arcade Fire! I give you power..is giving me life.
Disconcerting industrial sounds that appear to be the aural equivalent of pvc shorts worn to Berghain and not taken off for thirty six hours straight, overlaid with soft synth and an electric drum machine.
Organs preceding Mavis Staples powerhouse voice encourage visions of an evangelical preacher from a pulpit, contrasting nicely with Win Butlers non invasive tones.
Its undeniably Arcade Fire with an added rusty edge.
All proceeds from the single are being donated to the American Civil Liberties Union. Coupled with the refrain of "I give you power over me" and Win Butler remarking that Trump is "a f**king nightmare", it is no doubt a political statement and indicative that their particular art form is alive and kicking.
No album date has been released yet but confirmed tour dates during the Summer suggest there will be one soon.
