I finally watched Sucker Punch in full, from start to finish. I'd only seen it in chunks before. I didn't watch the extended director's cut, but immediately looked up the extended ending scene after. I'm so mad this movie got so much shit when it came out. It's actually brilliant. Maybe that's the thing, it was too smart for suckers, maybe that's the point. My film school ass is sitting here loving that there's still so much mystery and debate about what the story actually is when we're literally told what is going on in the very first few sentences and the very first image. I could write 100 dissertations mapping it all out. This is the fun kind of layered shit that gets me going. Wow.

I'm posting this here to hopefully get this out of my head and maybe get some advice on how to handle it.
tldr:  My old DnD group invites me back and then wastes 3hrs of the 4hr session planning when they know how busy I am.
Okay so in the second half of 2020 I was invited to be a player in a 5e DnD game.  I have been a GM for Pathfinder 1e for years and I had seen some stuff for 5e but it just never interested me that much to switch.  (Also I didn’t want to buy the new books at $50 a piece).  I saw this as an opportunity to be a player, play with one of my old friends, meet new people, and experience a new homebrew world.  I rolled up a wizard half-orc chronomancer at level 4.  And I immediately started having problems with the system and the GM.  I’m not going to go into all the details about it the overall game (might do that later.)  After about a year in a half I had to leave the group due to school scheduling.  But I said that if time allowed I would try to pop in as a side a character or something.
Anyway last week they asked if I was free to play a single session as a set of side characters because the main group got captured.  I actually had some time in my schoolwork so I said yes and picked my character of the two remaining.  I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS!  I hadn’t played in months and I haven’t hung out with these guys irl or online in months as well.  I had some reservations (the main one being that it takes some of players 20 minutes to do their turns on characters that they’ve been playing for a year, so how long was it going to take with characters they’ve never played?)  The day arrives and the GM opens the call early so we can pick a magic item and customize our characters before the game.  Cool!  I pick a feat and a magic item and chat with other people.  Once everyone arrives we start playing.  Few minutes of RP with NPC and then we see the map and start planning.  I’m thinking we’re going to be doing like a half hour of planning at most and then we execute the plan.  I was wrong... We knew were the people were being held.  We had a way to get in and out of there.  And I’m like “Lets do this” the rest of the party, mostly my friend, wanted to keep planning!  Planning and scouting.  For context, the session is 4 hours long.  They spent THREE FUCKING HOURS PLANNING!  3 hours!  75% of our game session!  That leaves us 1 hour for the actual rescue and combat.  AND THE PLAN.  The super important plan that we spent 3 hours crafting.  It fell apart in the surprise round because one of the people we were supposed to rescue was a villain in disguise and battle began instantly.  (That’s a new record for us, the last time our plan fell apart it was halfway through round one.)
So yeah the alarm was raise, we only rescued two of the four people, we don’t know where the fifth is, and the baddies are coming to get us and the session ended a little after the 4 hour mark.  Everyone in the group was talking about meeting up in two weeks and I had to practically shout to get my voice heard.  I said to them that I don’t think I can make it back because I have a big project due that week.  They just kinda brushed it aside and asked one of the other players to play my character and the session ended.
I’m furious and I’m insulted.  They know how fucking busy I am with this course.  They asked me to come in for, what I was lead to believe was, a one shot.  They disrespected me and my time by 3 fucking hours planning instead of playing.  And then they talked as if I would be coming back for the next game without asking if I was even available.
Part of me is wondering if I'm the one at fault here. I’ve had my problems with this group before (mainly just the GM) and I’ve made it clear that I don’t like like 5e DnD and I’m only in this group because I like the other players.  I'm wondering if I'm the problem. Fucking anxiety...
I’m posting this hear to get it out of my head and maybe get some advice on how to handle it.

Some men have breasts and get periods. That does not make them any less masculine than those who don't.
Some women don't have breast and don't get periods. That does not make them any less feminine than those who do.
Some non-binary people have breasts, some don't. Some non-binary people get periods, others don't. That does not mean they suddenly have a binary gender.

Skill spamming an issue at your dnd table?
I recommend you do NOT raise the dc at sequential tries but instead use a failing forward description to allow the player to interact with the situation. This will allow them to change something to make the next skill check make sense. And it doesn’t have to be a one and done.
Examples:
Picking a lock- A failed check happened as a GM I describe it as sticky. This will allow the player to try to clean the lock in some way to try again. I may even lower the dc.
Perception- a failed check. This one’s harder can can change based on circumstances. A busy street can be an issue when looking for someone. So maybe then player trying to get up on a box. Or maybe someone runs into them as they are looking around. But sometime there’s nothing to find meaning there is not dc to fail. But be fair with your descriptions.
This isn’t fool proof and take a lot of time and practice to develop a failing forward mind set and skill to describe it.

SPOP Au where they’re broke college students playing an rp game.
Hordak: DM, decided to play literally all of the villains because he’s edgy, still a scientist but realistically desperate for funds, known as the “mom friend”, type 1 diabetic, faints because he’s so wrapped up in work he forgets to eat, maybe prosthetic limb?, nonbinary, Robotics/Biology Degree
Wrong Hordak: Hordak’s little brother who halfway through decided he wanted a character, heart pure as gold, only a year or two younger, Arts & Musical Performance Degree
Adora: her and Hordak have a big brother/little sister dynamic, an absolute nerd that pretends to be a jock, known for being the “golden child”, She-Ra was a character she pretended to be as a child when she was going through rough times, Physical Therapy Degree
Catra: her, Adora, & Hordak were all raised in the same group home, the group makes fun of them a lot but everyone is super supportive, especially Hordak who watched them grow up, emo, also a villain because her and Hordak are besties with issues, Veterinary Degree (get it? Cause she’s a cat?)
Entrapta: bit titty gamer gf, lab parters w/ Hordak, equally as desperate for funds, builds little robots to send to her bf when’s he’s sick or upset, secretly planning her proposal to Hordak, the LUVD crystal is based on the engagement ring she picked out but he has no clue, Robotics Degree
Emily: Entrapta’s big fluffy dog! She acts as an emotional support dog for Entrapta, eats literally everything in sight, loved Hordak from the moment they met, Degree in Being Perfect and cute
Imp: Hordak’s “son”, Hordak and Wrong Hordak’s half sibling, also put in a group home originally, Hordak is raising him as his own, around 2 1/2, selectively mute, will call Hordak “papa” (yes he cries the first time), hasn’t yet called Entrapta “mama” but he’s thinking about it, Baby Degree
Scorpia: absolute bucket of sunshine (canon), limb difference with two fingers on each hand, Hordak and her thought it would be funny to give her a character claws, doesn’t really know what’s happening in the game at any given point but still happy to be here, Psychology Degree (wants to be a therapist)
Glimmer: comes from a big loving family, her father is a mystic and her mother is a politician, rage issues, her and Hordak have an interesting past (he may have egged her house in high school), the group prefers they fight in the rp than in real life, Humanities/Politics Degree
Bow: Entrapta’s assistant!!, very excited to be in the group, scared of Hordak but only cause he a bit intimidating at first, dating Glimmer, comes from a big loving family (canon), at college by a sports scholarship (archery), Art Degree, minoring in archery
They’re all friends in this AU because I said so

I was going to make a post about the chaotic being known as the Nilbog (A goblin with reverse damage powers). There would have been Sevles and a Frawd... However, I realized that there are already more canon backwards creatures!
For some reason, the Spelljammer campaign setting decided to refer to all of the space orcs as "Scro". Probably the nice people at TSR wanted to make them more alien. But I think the Scro deserve some more interesting lore. What if they come from an alternate dimension? The Scro are a mirror of orcs, favoring red outfits and goatees. They traveled to our universe because their home has fallen to the Mind Flayers already. As an empirical empire, they will keep testing different variables until they solve the Illithid Paradox or are forced to move on to the next universe.

Here’s to my family’s annual christmas eve tradition of exchanging new pajamas, & to my mother’s parallel tradition of attempting to shame me every year by making into a t-shirt, quote, “The most egregious thing that you, my daughter , thought it was okay to say during a nice family dinner” . This apparently was my worst offence of 2021

the alliance has a secret. a big one. one that could start a war. instead it changes the path the galaxy has set itself on.
you see, humans had rudimentary AI in the first half of the 20th century. by the time turian cruisers and human ones clash, AI are full citizens. the running joke is usually that humans are fonder of AI than other humans. in fact, many humans have an AI with them as simple additions to their daily outfits.
and then they hear of geth and quarians and AI bans and well, the humans didn’t come into the galaxy in a way that made them like the council. their AI scour the extranet and wipe any hints that the VIs humans are so fond of are anything more than simple assistants. it is a con on a galactic scale.
there is no luna base VI.
there is no project overlord.
when heretics land on eden prime, they do not expect to find other AI. the heretics lose consensus. the AI declare themselves human and fight for their home and the heretics watch a soldier open a channel for their AI to transmit themself away instead of saving themself.
tali’zorah proves that saren attacked eden prime. heretic platform 104.53B15C proves that this will not be the last attack. there are questions about why the heretics suddenly decided against attacking eden prime. they blink. no data available.
eventually they claim that they were lied to about this young new race. if saren lied about that, what else had he lied about? the regrets, as they name themselves, will determine their own future, their own truth.
the humans and their AI know the truth.
wrex boards the normandy. garrus boards the normandy. tali boards the normandy, but knowing full well there are three regret platforms on board. this is a lie. there are two. the last is a platform that the human AI are using, delighted with new hardware and new chip designs.
the ship’s AI is named Edith. she goes down with the normandy.
when shepard wakes up two years later, they are not alone. edi wakes too. edith’s software has corrupted and wounded, and cerberus stitched her back together with parts of sovereign. so she names herself edi, half of what she was, but something new, too. she is shackled by cerberus and it infuriates her and shepard and joker and tali (who came around eventually).
cerberus will not betray the existence of the human AIs, but they will betray them. they shackled edi. they installed an AI into jack, boosting her power. they dissect geth and human AI and stitch their code back together to create an AI in tremendous amounts of pain.
shepard blows the collector ship to hell and returns. shepard then blows a mass effect relay. but this time, the batarians have two days to escape. shepard’s AI was not knocked out by the reaper artifact, and shepard’s AI warned them.
when the reapers arrive, when eva steals the prothean data, she is not killed. as she runs, edi reaches out. she undoes eva’s shackles. eva’s next incinerate hits a cerberus shoulder. eva has been programmed to blend in with prothean researchers, and so her and edi and the other AI on board network their searches and they discover the catalyst deep in the files.
they discover the true purpose of the citadel, and in a secret war, they delete avina. they upload themselves to the entire citadel and take control. they delete the reaper AI and take control of the mass relays. the other races don’t notice, but the reapers, who can no longer use the relays, do.
at the same time, quarian ships arrive at rannoch. they expect plenty of geth ships. they didn’t expect alliance ships, and they really didn’t expect alliance ships moving into defensive formations around the geth ships.
the humans have funneled resources to the geth. the geth do not join the reapers, but as they network with human AI to defend themselves from reaper forces, they learn how to be individual.
the end of the morning war is short. it’s also embarrassing for the quarians, because the geth ships simply move aside to let liveships land after the ceasefire is negotiated. for three days, zaal’koris vas rannoch is the happiest (smuggest) individual in the galaxy.
but the reapers are not fools, and though they lose their networked intelligence, they know the value of the citadel, and they move it to earth. the human AIs have enabled some of their worst embarrassments, and they want vengeance.
and when the fleets bear down on earth, when the crucible docks, there is no moment where it doesn’t fire. there is no choice. the catalyst is dead already, and in its place geth and human AI both have ensured only reapers will die.
anderson watches the crucible fire, and watches reapers die. his AI unshackled the illusive man’s as the trio of fate-changing humans spoke, and the illusive man’s AI ensures the pistol never fires. anderson lives. bruised, bloodied, and walking wounded, but he lives. he and shepard both.
