Lmao I coulda split this into like 5 posts but chose not to
Ok so after Yesterday's lie, I have way more questions about Philip Wittebane.
First off- whats up with his brother?
Tumblr media
My first reaction was that Philip's brother was one of his "companions" that died in the Titan's veins
Tumblr media
But it seems odd to me that Philip would refer to his brother simply as a "companion". Additionaly, its really weird that if we assume that Philip and his brother arrived on the isles at the same time, why Philip never mentioned his brother in his diary. Even if we were to guess something like they both ended up at different spots on the isles, why wouldn't Philip have written about not knowing where his brother is or wanting to find him before making his portal. It isnt just a thing with Philip either, Gwendolyn only ever mentioned one human being on the isles prior to Luz
I genuinely can't think of an explanation that wouldn't have an unreasonable amount of plotholes, but there is definitely something going on with his brother
Secondly, Philip and his brother were like.. famous, apparently? Well, famous by small town Connecticut standards. They were famous enough to get a statue made of them, and to have pseudohistory books written about their mysterious dissaperence at the hands of a witch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This in of itself isn't too surprising, as based on their dress and fancier British accents, they were probably relatively influential in the Gravesfield colony, possibly founding it, so their disappearance would likely become a relatively popular story in the same vane as the Roanoke colony.
But for some reason Luz doesn't know who Philip is prior to finding his diary, otherwise she would probably have some line about how theres a statue of Philip Wittebane in her hometown. Its not too hard to belive that luz just doesn't really care about the history of her town, but I find it very hard to believe she wouldn't at least be interested about the local mystery of the Wittebane Brothers disappearance at the hands of a witch- that kind of story seems like it would be right up Luz's alley.
Maybee the Wittebanes weren't actually influential in Gravesfield, and were never named in any of the stories, and the statues are simply red herrings, though admittedly, that doesn't seem like something this show would do.
Moving on to the witch from the book-
Tumblr media
Now its been implied that Philip wasn't enticed into the demon realm, but rather, he just..found himself there, through a random rift in realities caused by titans blood. So the witch is a very mysterious character.
But first, I would like to propose the idea that in reality, there never was a witch, and she's just the fabricated explanation to explain the Wittebane's disappearance, because the humans didn't know what titans blood was or what it did. However, given the fact that this explanation for the witch would be lame, I am going to ignore it.
So the main question is who the witch is, and why would they want to lure two humans into the demon realm? I think a possibility is that the witch was the collector
Tumblr media
Now, we don't know much about the collector, but I dont think its too much of a stretch to say that she likes to collect things, including living things like the owl beast, so maybe she wanted to add some humans to her collection. This could explain why Philip's brother was never mentioned in his diary- because he was in the collector's possession, while Philip got away. This theory can't answer how the collector was able to go to the human realm however.
I've never had this many questions after an episode before, but I know that they'll all be answered in time.
Bonus
Tumblr media
I had been under the assumption that Luz's dad wasn't actually important, but now I'm not so sure. The fact that we are very deliberately shown a closeup of the picture, while his face is also deliberately obscured implies some important connection to Luz's father.

@v4ul7-hun73r We can assume that life on the boiling isles works the same as on Earth because we are expressly told that Giraffes are Demons from the Boiling Isles, but on Earth, they're just animals that work the same as any other animal, therfore Life on Earth and life on the Boiling Isles work by the same genetic rules, which is why I dont necessarily agree with the fantasy argument.
Also while the mural from the credits is what King thought he looked like before he shrunk, his notion of his image was based on what his father looked like in the murals we see in Echoes of the Past, which is why I take them as reputable depiction of King's father
Yeah I hate to break it to y'all, but this is not King's father.
Tumblr media
If we look at the depictions of King's father from the murals in Echoes of the Past and the end credits, we can clearly see a difference
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For one, King's father is shown to be MASSIVE, and while the character we see at the end of Eda's Requiem is much larger than the average person, he is still nowhere near the size the murals would make us believe.
Secondly, none of the murals depict him with wings, so unless King's species develops wings very late in life, then they can't be the same character.
And lastly, the horns don't match up at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Eda's requiem, the character's horns curve around like a rams, and while the artistic depiction of King's Father's horns is inconsistent, they all generally go backwards without looping, like a goats.
You could chop up this inconsistency to innacurate artistic depictions, but I would argue that the looping horns is a distinct enough feature that artists would not forget about them, and the same can definitely be said about the wings.
*I would also like to note that the character in Eda's requiem has a beard, while king's father doesn't in 2/3 depictions we have of him, but since a beard can come and go, it isnt the strongest evidence
If I were to guess, this character is a relative of King's, maybe a sibling, uncle, or cousin, and he might have an idea to help King find his father.

@v4ul7-hun73r I mean, there's no in universe genealogical proof of King's disproving anything you said about the teeth or horns changing, but there's also nothing to prove it either. And while its most definitely not a one to one comparison, horned animals on Earth tend to have their final horn shape when they become adults, so it would be odd if an adult of King's species suddenly had their horns change to a radically different shape, especially in such a short amount of time.
Also I don't think King's species reproduces asexully. For one, in the episode "really small problems" he asks Tibbles whether or not he would find love in the future. This could easily be seen as a throwaway joke, but it does show that king has some base instinct that he needs to find a mate. Additionally, in asexual reproduction, children are identical to their parents. This creates very little distinction between individuals in a species, and especially within the same family
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can clearly see here that king, the stranger, and kings relative from the murals (who we can assume are all part of the same lineage) all have radically different horns. King's go straight back like an antelopes (though it is possible that kings will develop differently with age), the stranger's curve in a loop like a bighorn rams, and the his father's bend at an angle like a goats. If King's species reproduces asexually, there would be no genetic variation, which we can clearly see there is. This implies that King's species does not reproduce asexually.
Yeah I hate to break it to y'all, but this is not King's father.

Sure, belos uses his right hand for some actions, but that does not prove he is ambidextrous. Having a dominant hand does not mean you never use your nondominant hand. Your dominant hand is the hand you use for fine motor skills, holding your staff without performing magic and putting on you mask are not really fine motor skills. The only fine motor skills we see Belos use are with his left hand (performing magic with and without the use of his staff and fixing his staff with a screwdriver)
This is with the possible exception of him cracking open the palisman with his right hand. Though I would argue that it is an action that must be done with both hands, and as such can't really be used to determine the dominant hand.
But also, I think the fact that Belos grabs the palisman with his left hand, and then pours the cracked open palisman into his mask with his left hand gives even more validity to the idea that he is left handed
Tumblr media
But even if we were to assume that Belos were ambidextrous, which I don't, we would also have to assume that Philip Wittebane is also ambidextrous, of which there is no evidence in support of, as the only action we see him doing is writing with his right hand.
Ok so I am very skeptical of the theory that Philip Wittebane and Emporer Belos are the same person for many reasons. Far too many to mention, but I'll start with one detail that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.
Tumblr media
Here we can clearly see Philip writing in his journal with his RIGHT hand
Tumblr media
And here we can see that Emporer Belos uses his LEFT hand to perform magic, but also-
Tumblr media
Here he is holding his staff with his left hand
Tumblr media
And in this promo art drawn by Dana Terrace, Belos is fixing his staff with his left hand.
With the attention to detail that TOH crew puts into the series, I sincerely doubt this is an oversight. If they intended for Philip and Belos to be one in the same, then they would have made it so they have the same dominant hand

Simon and lying
I saw someone saying Simon was stupid for not lying to Hazel about killing Tuba
Tumblr media
But what they're forgetting is that Simon hates being lied to
Tumblr media
I actually find this quite interesting. Simon equates being wrong with lying. So when he is presented with information that suggests he is wrong about something (ie numbers are supposed to go down, the true conductor is one-one) he does mental gymnastics in order to prove that he wasn't wrong (and therefore a liar, the thing he detests so much); he makes excuses to prove this (Amelia has lost her way, Grace betrayed the Apex, etc)
I feel like this explains this line
Tumblr media
Simon doesn't want to change because that would mean admitting he was wrong, and thus a liar.

To those who believe that Simon is a psychopath-
Tumblr media
Not a defense of his more reprehensible actions. I'm just pointing out that believing Simon was incapable of betterment is incorrect, but also (at least in my mind) makes the story less interesting. If Simon inherently couldn't have worked to become a better person then his death is no longer tragic, because what else could have happened?

Hey this post is one of the top ones on this topic, so I feel I should say this
I am not Serbian, I have never lived in Serbia, as such, I am not the prime authority on the situation there. The purpose of this post was to simply bring more attention to the situation as i have seen a lot of false reporting. If you want to know more about these protests, I encourage you to talk to an actual Serbian person. That is the best way to actually understand what these protests are actually about, not the media. Talking to actual Serbian people is how I first learned about the false reporting on these protests. So please, listen to Serbian people, they're a better authority on this than I am
Tumblr media
Kinda pisses me off that media outlets are trying to say that the protests in serbia are because of coronavirus restrictions.
They are protests against a violent dictatorship!
Please do not buy into the idea that serbians are protesting covid-19 restrictions, they are protesting for the end of a violent dictatorship.
Listen to actual Serbian people before the media

Hey can some of y'all just stop being racist in the replies? You can hate the chinese government without being a fucking racist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
China is not only breaking the law by violating the autonomy of Hong Kong, but they are also claiming jurisdiction over the entire world. China can prosecute you for violating this law no matter where you are. And depending on where you live, China might be able to arrest you on foreign land. If it is safe for you to do so, please get the word out about this, it is a blatant overreach of power and violation of basic human rights

The law forbids "acts of secession, subversion of state power, terrorist activities, and collusion with foreign or external forces to endanger national security." These are defined very broadly, in order to apply it to as many people as possible. If it is safe for you to do so (ie, you dont live in china, hong kong, or any country with a chinese extradition treaty) please speak out about this bill
