ive been thinking a lot about how the pjo universe will continue and truthfully I dont think it can (in a meaningful way) until rr commits to actually taking a stance on tlo and moving forward accordingly. tlo wasn't really a victory, percy didn't reform anything. he managed to get zeus to make a tiny concession that, when you think about it, benefits the gods much more than it does their children. I mean... claiming is a meaningful gesture and all, but thats really all it is. the whole pay your child support joke is funny, but claiming their kids doesn't amount to offering any of the structural support that would actually substantially improve their lives.
what's interesting is how ingrained it is in the culture of chb how they define themselves by who their parents are. depending on how devoted they are, who their godly parent is influences their opinions and perceptions of themselves and others. (see the percabeth poseidon/athena rivalry and how the camp started to split up into its own mini war in tlt). those kids, no matter whether they've even met their parents, clearly shape some aspects of their identity around their parent.
keeping in mind that the gods and their power are derived from worship, and how their kids practice their own form of worship simply by existing, claiming them strengthens them inherently. not to mention that the gods use their kids to do things they couldn't themselves, like percy being poseidons hail mary to stop the war in tlt.
meanwhile gods are forbidden from interfering with human fate, demigods are still in danger from monsters and are trapped by fate and prophecy and even if the gods do break their oaths, they dont even really suffer for it.
tlo is a really bitter victory against a force they cannot defeat and cannot strongarm into changing.
I am convinced that none of the series post pjo have worked because none of them can commit on what the ending of tlo really means.
if the thesis statement is that demigods are just doomed by the narrative, which is what's hinted at, then fucking commit to that and make it a tragedy. rr cant do that however because it doesn't at all fit into how he writes, so right now all the series are stuck in a place where theyre either standalone adventures in the pjouniverse (tsats, cotg) that function more as companion novels to the main series, or series (hoo, toa) whose conclusion is that yeah things do sure suck but theres fuck all I can do about it.
its a tragedy thats not allowed to be a tragedy, which means that even if the books are fun on an individual level, in an overarching aspect they are infested with this depressing resignation, where characters have resigned themselves to be content with how things are. characters arent allowed to be upset because if theyre allowed to be angry that anger has to lead somewhere which its never does.
the universe is standing at a crossroads between 'overthrowing the gods/changing the status quo' and ' commit to the tragedy of what it means to be a hero' and and we haven't moved forward since the last olympian was published.

I CANT STOP FUCKING GRINNING
the funny thing about william andrew solace is that he has rizz but a very specific branch of rizz that has never worked on any living soul. the funnier thing about niccolò di angelo is that the rizz works on him and only him and unfortunately the rizz works on him HARD

Will Solace probably learned to put aside his own needs and wants to help other people during tlo. After Michael Yew died, Percy tore Will away to save Annabeth. He didn't get to help look for Michael or even grieve for him; he had to save Annabeth. While he's healing her, Will says that they're lucky they got there when they did or else Annabeth would've died, which probably solidified that sentiment for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same thing happens in tho and Will again puts his own needs aside to help save other people. At this point, his only siblings, Austin and Kayla disappeared, yet Will knew it was his duty to stay back and heal the injured. He even stopped Apollo from trying to find them at that moment.
Tumblr media
Will probably had more concern for Austin and Kayla than Apollo at that moment. He already lost Lee, Michael, and the rest of his unnamed sibling during botl and tlo; he doesn't want to lose his remaining ones. Even though he experienced so much loss and thought he was going to experience more, he still stayed behind to treat the rest of camp because he had to.
Will's sense of duty has no regard for himself.

currently thinking about how percy attempted to end his life by suffocating himself underwater near the argo ii. but jason disrupted it and saved his life. then months later. jason was killed on a boat surrounded by water. and it just so happened to be on a quest that percy turned down.

it’s honestly kind of mind boggling to think about the mindset differences between chb and cj and how it impacted the way each camp was run if that makes sense ??
like chb’s mindset pre meeting cj was that they needed to live their lives one day at a time and expect death at every turn but also be grateful that your here and alive
like to me chb is a camp bc it’s trying to cater to the fact that it’s 90% young children running around like we’re trying to keep things fun to keep kids from wanting to leave and also give them this idea of fake comfort
the “old kids” are still teens and your expected life span is like 20 if your lucky and don’t expect to suddenly be set free at 20 nono your still going to fight every day of your life while also keeping this side of yourself secret as to not get others or yourself hurt bc remember your a freak lol
then you look at cj and yeah that’s a child labour camp but your surrounded by a city of potential you can retire and you can see your entire lineage living and breathing here in a space of your own
like cj always seemed to have a more grown up air around it bc outside the camp they were surrounded by adults, everything is more grown up- the progression of the city, the people who live there, and the way it’s run like a legit army and not a field trip gone wrong
at cj your there to learn how to protect the city this is an army and you are a soldier vs chb which is riddled with a child’s touch bc that’s who lives there
like it literally takes percy’s generation of campers who watched the mistakes of the generation before them to make even the slightest bit of change which (aside from the claiming) was literally just them expanding and gaining some type of political upgrade while cj has a whole ass government
like how crazy is that
i could imagine percy talking to hazel of frank abt that in son as he’s getting his memories back and he just happens to sprinkle that in with other facts he’s remembering abt chb and their like
“?? tf you mean the oldest kids you knew from camp were only ljke 3 years older then you? like they moved out after that or..oh they died? wow. oh they never actually even made it out of camp..wow..and the like actual oldest camper you knew changed to the dark side and was the vessel for kronos/saturn??..right..”
and like obv some cj kids can relate to chb kids bc they’ve also been uprooted from their homes to live at cj but we can literally read from percy how nice it is just to have a future to look towards
sigh :(
also i know there is a future for chb to a degree but it’s just crazy the amount of work with barely any reward alongside the fact that it’s borderline discouraged to think that way

thinking abt how percy exploded that volcano but from annabeths perspective bc could you imagine being her and watching that bitch explode and being like “damn he really did have a plan he ate that up :)” and she’s waiting there for like half an hour and waiting for him to pop out of the woodwork but as time goes by he doesn’t she’s like “wait a damn minute…”
like ik that shit was traumatic as hell but how FUNNY IS THATTT
she’s like standing a ways away at the entrance to one of the labyrinth tunnels imagining percy walking away from the explosion and pulling her into another kiss after this crazy near death experience she’s probably thinking this is when their gonna start dating (or she’s thinking abt how they’re never going to speak again bc he doesn’t like her like that blah blah) and as she’s thinking abt this she’s like “hmm it’s been a while maybe i should look for him or smth” she’s like calling out his name and ever so slowly the last line of that prophecy starts playing in her head
like she prob went from “percy :) hey percy!! percy im over here !!” to “PERCYYYY‼️🔇🔇🔇PERCY WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU LERCY PERFYYYY PERUC PETYC WHere WHEREE ARE YOU PERRCYYYY‼️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️”
ik that girl was out searching for that man until the helicopters came and she had to dip
coming back to camp covered in soot and trauma thinking she just killed her best friend
this or she didn’t believe he had a plan at all and when he doesn’t show up she just knows deep down that it’s over (not that he’s dead bc unless she has a body ik for a fact she won’t believe that shit) but just that smth bad has happened and that she should’ve stayed with him instead of leaving

headcannon that after percy gets home and all that from being missing the first several months of him being home was everyone acting like he’s a small child who might get lost if he isn’t wearing one of those monkey backpacks with a leash as a tail
i know annabeth stopped letting him walk her to her cabin she now walks him to his cabin and watches him close the door then stands there for 5 minutes before calling goodnight to his window and if he doesn’t answer she breaks the door down to verify he is infact still in there
sally walks into him room at night just to check if he’s still in his bed tbh the first month i know sally was practically rocking him to sleep just so she knew he was home and safe
when he’s not at camp he’s at home if he’s not at home he’s at camp and if he’s not at either of those he’s got a buddy with him
i know every so often he starts feeling a bubble of anxiety in his chest and he has to force an extremely strong feeling of safety and conger up a mental image of exactly where he’s at just to calm down grover who he just saw 8 hours ago
it probably stresses sally and paul out when he’s in his room for too long and they don’t hear him walking around like he goes upstairs to do his homework and once he’s sat at his desk for over an hour he’s got some knocking at his door and it’s paul “just checking in”
i know everytime he walks into a cabin or the big house or even home everyone greets him like it’s the first time they’ve talked to him in years like they’re trying to positively reinforce the fact that he’s safe and home
i know paul starts getting a little anxious when he doesn’t see him around for a certain amount of time too like he misses percy leaving for the day so paul pokes his head into percy’s room to see it empty then goes downstairs to see only sally and has to force a flat voice as he’s like “lol so have you seen percy recently or…” as his hearts beating in his throat
like percy disappearing has def given everyone ptsd and anytime he’s gone for what feels like even slightly too long they start to panic a little
he stops at a grocery store after he leaves school and ducks into an alley to iris message annabeth just to let her know he’s gonna run late 20 min later he’s trying to debate what flavor ice cream he should get when an employee is tapping him on the shoulder bc there’s someone on the line for him and it’s annabeth who’s hacked into the security cameras telling him to get chocolate
she got 2 birds with 1 stone now he has to leave and come home (bc monsters) and she also gets her fav flavor

i really hope as a wedding gift sally gets the front page newspaper of when annabeth percy and grover were on the fbis most wanted list and frames it for them
like the weddings super private so when they open it everyone around them kinda knows the joke abt it and it’s like a cute moment
then when they get their own house they have it over the fireplace mixed in with other random cute pics so no one truely notices what it is until annabeth has her mom friends over and their wine drunk and one of the moms is like “you two were wanted by the FBI???”
and annabeth has to remember what the story was that they had made up and is like “lol yeah it was a huge misunderstanding we were actually kidnapped by this guy and percy had to have a standoff with him bc he was holding us at gunpoint...it was a wedding gift😁”
and their all like “…oh….haha…”
then they all go home and look it up

i like to think if annabeth and percy ended up living around mortals they would tell their friends abt some of the stuff they went through bc they can’t really hide it forever except they make it sound like their family’s part of the greek mafia
a lot of “yeah my dads…influential…in greece”
or “my moms,,pretty powerful in greece,, yeah she’s up there lol..anyway”
like they make it sound like maybe poseidon and athena are two “business CEO’s” who butt heads but everyone thinks their two mafia leaders who hate eachother
annabeth slips up and brings up the 7 months percy was missing and they have to cover it up saying his aunt, on his dads side, sent him away to a boarding school in greece where he wasn’t able to contact anyone here in america
“yeah we don’t really talk to her after..that..”
it doesn’t help that their friends can hear them hiss in greek to each other when they don’t want them to know what their saying
or when their stretching in a certain way that makes their shirt ride up and there are obvious scars hidden underneath
and it honestly all makes sense just going off the vibes of the two of them so no one really questions it because who would and anytime either of their parents appear shifted into their mortal counterparts everyone keeps their eyes downcast

The mischaracterization of people from PJO is so funny, but ESPECIALLY from HOO onward like.
“Hazel’s such an innocent little angel. She’s always nice and kind and confused.”
Hazel, who’s always ready to fight in the same way Percy is? Hazel, who made it explicitly clear she probably would’ve rocked Octavian’s shit had he not been blackmailing her? Who gets so angry on behalf of the people she loves, to the point where she doesn’t forgive those who have wronged them? Who Percy described as cursing up a storm in one of their first interactions? Who’s been shown time and time again to be FAST to anger? That Hazel?
Or Nico, who’s “a misunderstood emo. A small bean. Cute like a wet cat and innocent like a bunny.”
Nico, who’s cannonically described by most characters as “scary and unnerving?” Nico, who, for a long time, is one of the angriest characters in the series? Who’s only sassy and sarcastic because it took him FOUR YEARS to mellow out? Who’s described as being one of the most powerful demigods, who a lot of people still consider the scariest? Who’s come into his own as a character from TTC to TSATS? That Nico?
Or Annabeth who’s, “cold and calculating. Doesn’t show emotion or express herself”
Annabeth, who’s the most expressive person in the series? Who cries in EVERY book in the OG series? Whether it be for Luke, or Thalia, or Percy, or Chiron, or a literal DOG? Who expresses passion like no other when it comes to architecture and her other interests? Who’s expressed compassion for people she didn’t know? People who at times posed a threat to her? Who isn’t afraid to be angry, or happy, or snide, or rude, or excited, or scared, or ecstatic? Who’s been unapologetically herself since the moment the series started? That’s who doesn’t show emotion? That’s Annabeth?

u ever like cry about how percy uh became friends with tyson and defended him from bullies even though like tyson was kinda dirty and didn’t smell great and cried a lot and percy’s own reputation directly suffered from being friends with him…..and he met him at the subway at the same time every morning so tyson wouldn’t get agitated and stands guard by his stall so tyson doesn’t feel uncomfortable changing for PE and even after he gets publicly humiliated by poseidon claiming tyson he’s embarrassed but he still defends tyson so much that he yells at annabeth for badmouthing him………and then u find out that tyson PRAYED for help and poseidon just uh sent percy and didn’t even have to tell him to do anything bc percy is just so Good and cares So Much that it’s instinctual for him to defend people who need help….:

Okay but now I want to read this whole thing
Stitch
Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Rating: Teen Genre: Family, Friendship Characters: Lee Fletcher, Nico di Angelo, Will Solace
There’s bizarre, and then there’s this.  Even by demigod standards, this is far from normal.
Day four of @solangeloweek “AU”.  This is part of a much bigger plot I’ve had in mind for a while and may or may not write one day - it’ll be huge if I do.
Reminder that there’s now a discord server for all my fics, including this one!  If you wanna chat with me or with other readers about stuff I write (or just be social in general), hop on over and say hi!
Being a demigod, Lee Fletcher was used to the bizarre.  There was no such thing as normal when your father was a god, monsters were real and wanted you dead, and you spent your childhood in a training camp learning to wield weapons and climb lava walls.
Even so, some things stretched beyond his ability to simply accept when they happened, and the sight in the middle of the dining pavilion was one of them.
Two figures had appeared out of thin air, directly on top of the large, mysterious scar in the rock that had occurred sometime during the week the Apollo cabin had been on their annual winter trip and no-one had an explanation for (Lee knew Percy knew; the prickle of a lie whenever the son of Poseidon said otherwise ran down his spine, but he wasn’t going to push it.  Poseidon was the Earthshaker, after all).  The first figure was on his knees, clad all in black and emitting an aura that felt disturbing and more than a little chilly.  Waves of equally black hair hid his face as he leaned over the second figure.
Unlike the first, who was clearly conscious, the second figure was bloodied and still where they were crumpled on the ground.  Blond hair, splattered with red, surrounded their head like a halo, but everything else was blocked from view by the kneeling boy.
Most alarming was the familiar orange tee the crumpled figure wore, Camp Half-Blood emblazoned across the chest above a caricature of a pegasus, if only because all the campers still loyal to camp were already present and accounted for.
Next to him, his siblings shifted.  Will in particular seemed agitated, no doubt sensing injuries that needed healing, but none of them moved.  No-one else did, either, seemingly held in stasis by the sudden arrival of the strange figures.
Then the black-clad figure’s head rose, snapping up so fast it looked unnatural, and Lee found himself the target of dark, desperate eyes surrounded by too-pale skin.

It's funny cause from Will's pov you got the sense that he and Sophie didn't get along, but it was a kind of distracted negativity. A cool to somewhat neutral feeling towards each other, but realistically he just has way too much other shit to worry about. Meanwhile Sophie's sitting there with like... Boiling pits of rage.
tbh I think Sophie’s anger at/about Will waxes and wanes and that’s sort of how I was writing her in iyncbyhim, but in this fic I think it’s particularly potent because it’s taking place shortly after Trials of Apollo and specifically Tower of Nero, in which I can imagine a lot of Apollo’s other kids, not just Sophie, might feel varying degrees of hurt and neglected and resentful about Will being the one who got to go on the quest with their dad. Like yeah he’s their counselor so it might make sense—but who among them wouldn’t still want to go in his place? And I liked a thing that @rosedroad highlighted in an ao3 comment about how Will’s siblings would feel about him being insecure about “only” being good at healing, especially at the point we’re at by TOA where iirc Apollo acknowledges, in canon, Will is an even more powerful healer than he is. As a god. And then not only does he have these incredible magic powers, he gets to go on the big quest with Dad, too? And he has the gall to feel sorry for himself?
and something I didn’t really end up highlighting all that explicitly in the fic because… idk it’s not like Sophie can understand the themes of her own life and how she fits into a narrative, but that I was thinking about while writing it, was like… she has all this sympathy for Izzy and I think they have some parallels really, because of all this resentment they have/had towards their dad that ends up getting (partially) channeled towards Will, Apollo’s golden boy who has this super powerful gift, since actually addressing it with Apollo isn’t really possible. And I think it would have been really easy for Sophie to get drawn in by Kronos like Izzy did, if he’d had a chance to get inside her head—and if she and Silas hadn’t had each other as like a balancing force and an additional connection to camp. Whereas a lot of Izzy’s friends had already joined Kronos and left her suddenly lacking social support at camp, and while she had good relationships with some siblings, especially Will and Renee… Will was the one she wound up with that misdirected anger towards, especially after Michael kind of gave him her job, and even if Renee hadn’t been totally deferring to Michael and let her down in that way, it was never going to be on the same level as having a twin. And those things played a huge role in her joining Kronos’ army, and being susceptible to his manipulation. Like I think it’s all about context and the different supports or lack thereof they had that led to their different positions in the Titan War. Even if her dad sucks and she kind of resented her brother for existing, at least Sophie had Silas always on her side, always kind of in sync with her, always there to blow off steam and vent about it to each other. So neither of them was at as big a risk of getting drawn in by Kronos. And now Kronos is gone, of course, but—now Silas is too.

really i think one of my favorite character dynamics is “i don’t actually like you but we’ve been through so much together that i’d trust you with my life and know that we will always back each others calls. but i still wouldn’t trust you with my car keys.” like “we aren’t really friends but we’ve been thrust into an intense situation where you are the only other person i know so now we’re besties.” and “if it weren’t for our years of history i would have literally nothing to talk to you about at this work dinner.” Enemies to lovers has NOTHING on general disinterest to begrudging acknowledgment to discovering that this person is now an inextricable part of your life
