eleven days ago i had to say goodbye to my extremely beloved cat. his name was Milo, like my-love, meaning 'soldier', and also 'adored'. he was both. he loved everyone, and everyone loved him. we found each other when he was seven and we had the happiest seven years together, which isn't to say that life was always happy, just that together the rest didn't matter. there were a lot of things i always said about him: that he was my other half, that he was a piece of myself that existed outside of myself, that he was a brat and a menace and the most handsome boy in the world. he purred when i laid gently on top of him, he was on top of me any time i was somewhat stationary and horizontal, he tucked himself into my arms every night to sleep. you never saw two creatures who adored each other more and i told him so daily. it doesn't even seem true that the pain of loss is proportionate to the love- it is like part of me has been surgically removed and even still the joy we had is larger! he leaves me as he came to me, full of unexpected blessings.

Continuing my efforts of trying to put some more thoughts behind my art under a cut.

I’ve actually never drawn a serious picture of Zhang Chengling before so this is long overdue. The only real physical description we get of him in the book is that he’s a bit small, has big eyes, and thick eyebrows (yes, I am reading TYK again ha). So, I decided to focus more on expression here. ZCL is brave at times considering his poor martial arts skills but he’s also very scared and completely reliant on a total stranger (who can blame him honestly? If I was 14, my whole family got murdered and I was entrusted to a weird sick homeless man, I’d be terrified too).

Since this is part of my completely random, modern street fashion AU, I had some fun looking at different clothing styles. I ultimately felt like ZCL wouldn’t be concerned with how he dresses so I didn’t use one specific outfit reference for him but I had to put him in a frog bucket hat because it’s too cute 🥺🐸
