“ why did you come? ” (arthur x cassimir)
Arthur smiled, a grim look. "To see you." He tilted his head, eyes glittering with strange light, well aware this was not the statement Cassimir had been expecting.
Evening encroached, and Cassimir's study was darkening by the moment, the room lit by a few flickering candles that seemed to quail before the massing shadows of leafless trees from outside the lead-paned windows.
"News of your betrothal has reached me," he continued, shutting the study door behind him and, uninvited, moving towards the window.
In spring, Arthur knew, the room boasted a vantage of such green, it seemed the very emblem of House Malconaire. Now, however, covered all in a bed of white, the trees seemed skeletal, their bared arms reaching, jagged, towards the waning sun as if begging for the return of its light, and Arthur cast an incisive glance back towards Cassimir.
"This is a beautiful place, Cassimir," said Arthur, turning fully to face him. "Wonderful, warm, exceptionally kind and generous to all those who seek repose here." He paused, smiled a smile that did not reach his eyes. "Such a wonder deserves every care and attention one could possibly lavish upon it. Far more, in truth, than I suspect someone like you is capable of giving. Do we understand each other?"
Unsurprisingly, Cassimir did not look pleased, and, in truth, Arthur relished the look.
In truth, though -- Arthur knew well and good -- Eithne deserved far more than he, himself, could ever give her, as well. But he still believed he would have made a better spouse than Cassimir. At least, with him, she might have been an Empress. But it was Cassimir she had chosen and, wound him as it did not only to lose her, but to lose her to a rival he so disregarded, Arthur meant to do one last service.
"I wish to be perfectly clear, Cassimir," said Arthur, stepping closer, his voice turning to a growl. "Whoever may have won the keeping of this place, I care deeply for it still and I want you to know, I hold you personally accountable for its well being. Should anything at all I mislike befall it, it is me to whom you must answer, and I am in these matters, Cassimir of Malconaire, my father's son. I sometimes forget how to forgive. Understood?"

“ am i not good enough? ” (cassimir x eithne)
Seven Years Previous Despite her father's study door being shut, the loud voices carried into the hallway.
"That is not what I said, Cassimir. Please do not put words into my mouth."
Eithne had a mere seconds to hurry away from the door before it was thrown open with a great force. Cassimir stalked out, slamming the door shut behind him before he noticed Eithne standing in the hall.
"Eithne."
He was surprised to see her which had been her intent-- not to surprise him, specifically, but the entire family. It had been near six months since she'd been back to Malconaire, having been attending to the Queen. Both her majesty's schedule and unseasonably long winter season had made travel from the capitol to her home impossible.
Eithne would never admit out loud that Cassimir had not been high on the list of people she'd hope would be there to greet her upon her arrival. Still, she offered him a smile, hoping Cassimir would not realize that she had heard the end of his argument with her father.
"Hello, Cassimir. Are you--"
"What are you doing here?" he interrupted her. Eithne was taken aback by his question. This was her home. Why should anyone questions why she was there?
"I've come as a surprise for Roisin's name day," Eithne explained. She had missed Aoife's name day that year and had not yet forgiven herself for it. She knew she could not disappoint her baby sister.
"I see."
Cassimir was staring at her as if trying to remember something about his eldest step sister. Eithne found herself taking a small step away from him unconsciously, unsure of what to say next.
Thankfully, her father's study door opened at that moment, the kind familiar face lighting up as he beheld his eldest daughter standing there.
"Eithne!" he proclaimed, brushing past Cassimir to embrace his eldest daughter. Eithne hugged her father, but couldn't help but notice her step brother wordlessly storming down the hall and disappearing downstairs without another word.

"As Your Imperial Majesty commands ... "
Cassimir bowed his head, respectfully -- all the while he wished that this had not been such an impromptu visit. It had been some time since Cassimir had inspected the riverbend, himself, and he wondered at the current state of it. He had no wish to make an enemy of the emperor by invoking his displeasure. But, what's more, he meant to one day ask again ask his Imperial Highness for the stewardship of Lorcan. Once Eithne was his wife, he was certain that his claim to it would prove a hard one to refute ...
Cassimir hoped the emperor did not notice the flicker of irritation that passed over his features as he was reminded just how much attention his sons had paid his step-sisters -- particularly Eithne. In fact, his thoughts were often so consumed with Arthur's insistent pursuit of Eithne, that he had never given Edmund and Sebastian's presence much consideration.
He supposed they might have whichever step-sister they pleased, for however long. But he was not so stupid as to say as much to the Emperor, himself.
"We are honored, Your Imperial Majesty, to have made such friends," It was only by omitting Arthur from his thoughts that he was able to say this with a sincere smile.
He did manage a chuckle when Roderick began to ask him whether or not his sons had behaved honorably when it came to their infatuations. "Yes, boys will be boys, won't they? But no, I assure you, your sons have always conducted themselves honorably. I am confident that friendship -- and perhaps a bit of harmless flirtations -- is all that has ever passed between them."
He paused, "Have you had the honor of being introduced to my step-sisters, Majesty? I am sorry they are not here this afternoon to wait upon you. " A paused, "... The eldest is soon to be married," He hoped this information would make its way to Arthur's ears, " ... and I certain suitors shall soon be found for the rest of them." This he was less concerned about -- and less certain about, too -- but Roderick Varmont need not know this. All Cassimir hoped for was that Arthur Varmont would soon discover that there was no need for him to return to Malconaire again -- unless he meant to accept an invitation to the wedding.
Unexpected Arrivals | Cassimir & Roderick
It was a miserable day.
The temperatures had risen, so Cassimir supposed he should be glad that they didn't have the bitter cold to deal with, but the rain beat down with unforgiving force, melting much of the snow. The roads had turned into a swampy, muddy mess that were becoming unpassable.
Cassmir was seated comfortably enough near the fire in his step-father's old study when one of his servants entered -- rather flustered -- with a captain wearing the colors of House Varmont.
"Lord Malconaire -- " A quick bow from his servant, "excuse the intrusion -- "
The Captain had little patience for this and sidestepped the servant, to make his own announcement, "His Imperial Majesty, Roderick Varmont the First of His Name, Conquerer of the Twelve Kingdoms, Defender of the Faith, and god's own Champion has bestowed upon you the honor of hosting him and his men, while his carriage is repaired. He shall arrive momentarily. He shall expect to be received in a manner that befits such a guest."
Cassimir sprung into action immediately. He had no particular love for the Varmonts, Roderick included, but he knew the very important role that he and his mother hoped the emperor would play in their plans. Cassimir knew that for Roderick to marry Sonya, he must look favorably upon their family and he was not to allow this sudden development to hinder it.
He dispatched his servant immediately -- everyone must make ready for the emperor's arrival. He knew that even his step-sisters would be needed to help in the preparations (both prior to and during his arrival), so he would need to offer some excuse as to their absences. Besides, he did not want the emperor's eye to be distracted. Sonya was beautiful in her own right, but even Cassimir had to admit that each of his step-sisters possessed a beauty of their own (except, perhaps Brigit. If she had any beauty at all, she did an excellent job of hiding it).
When Roderick and his company did arrive, there was still much work to be done, but Cassimir was pleased as to what had been accomplished in the short notice that he had received. He felt it a testament to his own leadership (but didn't give a second thought to those who had actually performed the work).
"Your Imperial Majesty," Cassimir bowed low. "It is a honor to have you grace our halls. I'm sure you and your men must be hungry. If you would care to follow me, our cooks have prepared a feast."

"Name them," There was a both fierceness and sincerity in his voice. He was wild with impatience. In this moment, she could have asked for the world and he would have given it to her, if it meant that he would gain her hand.
"Your sisters will always have a place here," He knew that this was one of her conditions. And while Cassimir had hoped to one day be rid of them, he knew that Roisin was likely to marry and while he imagined that Aoife should never leave, he was certain that she would make an acceptable caretaker of any children they would one day have. Brigit was another matter entirely but that was a problem to be solved another day.
"And the servants, they shall have their positions back. Every one," He would have called them all there in that instant, if it was in his power. "There are some debts that must be paid off before there will be money to pay them," He found himself saying -- his mind racing with the list of things that he must first accomplish before he could make good on this promise, "but they shall all be set to return before you become my wife. Is there anything else you desire?"
He paused. It was then that he suddenly considered his mother: he knew that she had her heart set upon him marrying Guinevere Varmont -- and this hardly aligned with her plans. As much as he wished he could tell everyone he was met with the news, he knew that his mother had to be told in the right way.
"I only ask that you allow me to break the news to my mother. She will not understand. Not at first. But I shall tell her, as soon as I know how. You may tell your sisters if you wish, but no one else ... not until she knows."
Eithne's hands were still in his: he did not want to let them go. "Oh, Eithne," He ran his free hands through her hair and then touched her cheek, "You cannot know how long I have waited for this moment. Surely, you must know how much I love you? How much I have always loved you?"
For a Moment with You | Cassimir & Eithne
The kitchens, which would have otherwise been unknown to Cassimir, had become his favorite spot in the house. It was there that he was guaranteed to see Eithne: appearing almost angel like against the warm light of the great ovens where she worked.
He began his daily visits out of necessity -- his mother did not believe that his step-sisters ought to join them for meals (there was simply too much for them to do!), nor did they often join them to sit by the fire in the evenings ("they ought to be getting their rest"), so if Cassimir wished to see Eithne, at all, he must make the journey to the servants part of the estate.
But he quickly found that he not only enjoyed her company, he found comfort, also, in the warm and inviting space she and her sisters had cultivated there -- a far cry from the deeply formal rooms his mother had decorated upstairs. Although he appreciated her elegant and refined tastes, he hoped Eithne would bring some of her own homey touches (like the fresh wild flowers) to the place once they were married.
Today Cassimir brought with him a fresh bouquet of pale pink roses -- the last of the season -- to hopefully brighten his day with one of Eithne's smiles. Valentina often said that Eithne had put a spell upon him and as Cassimir looked upon her now, he half wondered if maybe his mother had been right about that, after all.
"For you," He said, placing the flowers gently into her hands, "Have you heard word of the celebration that is to be held in honor of the Princess's birthday? I mean to insist to Mother that she lets you and your sisters attend -- would that please you, Eithne? I'm certain it will be an evening not soon forgotten. The Emperor cares deeply for his eldest daughter and I'm sure he shall not spare any expense."

So I imagine that Lord Lorcan's eldest is about ten at this point and that Saoirse has been with he was v young (if not from the start??) so she's probably been working for them somewhere between 8 and 10 years???
And if that's the case, tbh cassimir probably would have forgotten that saoirse even existed if it wasn't for the fact that she's cillian's sister?? like I do think he has taken an interest in cillian's fam since it was known that ronan is a wanted man and when he hears that cillian is going to visit his family, that raises a red flag until he realizes that he does have a sister.
Also, as I'm writing this, I'm realizing that Cassimir probably feels sorta entitled to the Lorcan estate since the disappearance of its Lord?? Like he might be Lord Lorcan's step-cousin and no blood relation, but his cousin he remains and the only other male relative on the Lorcan side?? Ngl, he probably (unsuccessfully) tried to obtain wardenship over Lorcan as Lord Lorcan's ~cousin~ but Roderick was probs just like "who???" and went with someone else.
Anyway, he's still v invested in what happens to Lorcan and realizes that, short of getting Lady Lorcan to decide to remarry (which Cassimir isn't about b/c if he's not marrying Eithne, lbr he's going after Guinevere!) he won't ever get his hands on it.
I think he sees the next best thing is to become close with Lord Lorcan's son, so that when he finally becomes the Lord, Cassimir might have some sway over him?? So I can see him frequently visiting Lorcan to try to accomplish this??? Ngl, I don't' think he's fooling Lady Aine with what he's trying to pull and def not Saoirse BUT that probably won't stop him from trying!
OOC | Saoirse & Cassimir
saoirse!!! does not!!! like!!!! you!!!! tbh im not sure just how much she realistically knows abt the malconaire's og situation, but she at least saw them growing up together and probs did not make any v favorable impressions of cassimir or valentina back then, so just based on that alone she aint feeling the love, but if she ~does know that's even worse!!!!
cillian, at a resistance meeting: could we just take a detour and hit the malconaire estate just lng enough to knock off valentina and cassimir?
saoirse: cillian! how could you suggest such a thing? we can't kill them, that'd be--
cillian: i know, i know. wrong.
saoirse: --stupid. roderick would seize the estate w/o a male heir to hold it. what we should aim to do is srsly maim them so they can't do any harm and eithne runs the estate in their name.
cillian: saoirse, you're a genius
everyone else:
everyone else: ANYWAY! back to the varmont situation...
jk jk...sort of ;DDDD but yeah, saoirse isn't really pranky like her brother or anything, but she is probs extremely stern and a lil snarky w him ksldjfkjdslfjklsdf

cassimir & roisin: "so i found this waterfall"
Flashback: The Days Following the Battle of Malconaire
Cassimir stood silently before the grave of Lord Malconaire.
Once, he would have wept bitterly at the loss. Once, he would have felt it almost as deeply as any boy who had lost his father. But no longer. He looked at the grave of his dead step-father and found that he only felt anger and resentment.
Cassimir had not been able to ignore the silent judgement he endured at the hands of the servants and villagers alike. He knew what they all saw when they looked at him: in their eyes he was little less than a craven boy who had turned his tail and hid behind his mothers skirts when war came knocking at his door.
"I am not a coward!" He cried the words aloud, but the grave remained silent.
And now, no one wished to see him as their lord.
"You turned them all against me," He whispered bitterly, his voice lost amongst the howl of the wind. Once, Cassimir had truly believed that Lord Malconaire loved Cassimir as though he was his own son ...
But none of that had been real, had it?
"Mother was right, wasn't she? You never cared about me," He spat. "And you never cared about my mother. You never cared about any of us."
Flashback: The Days Following Lord Malconaire's marriage to Valentina Vasilieva
"So, I found this waterfall!"
Cassimir had been taken aback by his youngest step-sister: both her energy and enthusiasm had not been what he had expected from a lord's daughter. But then, all of his new stepsisters had surprised him, in some way. He certainly hadn't expected them to treat him as kindly as they had (except for Brigit, who had been distrustful from the start) and it made him wonder what it was they were after. Nor had he expected for all of Lord Malconaire's daughters to have -- in varying degrees -- an adventurous spirit. He didn't think his mother would approve of them running off all over Malconaire, unchaperoned, to do as they pleased. He supposed that that must be what happens when ladies grow up without a mother.
"Hmm, did you?" He wasn't especially interested in this, but his mother had told him that he must be on his best behavior towards his new step-sisters. He knew the importance she had placed upon him making a good impression upon his new father.
"Yes! ... or rather, I discovered an, apparently, already discovered waterfall, but it was quite new to me. One day soon, all of us should have a picnic there and then you and Sonya may discover it as well. Do you like picnics, Cassimir?"
"I -- "
Before Cassimir had a chance to respond, Roisin clasped her hands together and exclaimed, "Oh! But I have not told you the best part of it. On either side of the bank, white lilies bloom! They were my mother's favorite flowers, but none grew here at Malconarie. At least they didn't until she came and father had the gardener attempt to rectify the situation, but try as he might, they never did last more than a season. That is, not until she died -- and now there are white lilies spread all across Malconaire. Eithne says that they are a sign that she is still looking out for us."
"You have a new mother to look out for you now," Cassimir reminded her, a touch more sternly than he had meant. It had been clear even within their first few days there, that Lady Malconaire still had a hold upon this place. His mother had been quick to point this out to him, when they were in private.
No matter, Valentina had said, Soon the past will all be forgotten.
"Oh," That was all Roisin managed to say, as though she hadn't considered that Valentina would be her mother now. The sooner she learned that, Cassimir thought, the better.
Flashback: The Days Following the Battle of Malconaire
The skies were dark and rain had begun to fall upon the grave of Lord Malconaire, but Cassimir did not move. He hadn't noticed it until now, but something had been growing in the fresh earth upon his grave.
A white lily.
It grew, resilient, as though it meant to mock him. The second spring his mother had been mistress here, she secretly had the soil where the lilies grew salted and did so each year until there were no more lilies left. One by one she had slowly removed the signs that Lord Malconaire had ever had another wife. And now that he was dead, Cassimir was certain that there would be none left at all.
And who could blame her for it? She'd lived under the memory of her ghost since she had arrived here and now, she could finally be free. They both would.
Malconaire was his, he reminded himself as he grabbed the budding lily by the roots and pulled it free; crushing the petals in his hand, And there would be no more lilies in Malconaire.

" how long have i been asleep? " (cassimir x valentina)
"How long have you--!"
Valentina turned stormily towards the window. She'd just prodded him awake with the end of a broom she'd snatched from Eithne in confronting her. The upstart little minx had remained firm. But Valentina was about to hear it refuted.
Whatever happened -- even if he had, indeed, caved in a moment of weakness (men were horrifically weak in such matters, after all, it could surely be forgotten, erased, perhaps in time even...forgiven) -- she would still hear it put to rights, at the very least. Yet, upon being poked awake through his bedsheets, Cassimir hadn't darted up in horror, as she'd somewhat vindictively hoped, he'd grumbled something into his pillow which had nothing whtever to do with the matter which most preoccupied her, a fact which made fury an incandescent glow upon her alabaster face, shining in the dark of his room.
With an exasperated growl, Valentina stormed to the end of the room, ripping the curtains away from the windows to allow brilliant sunshine to pour in. She watched him flinch from the light with some modicum of satisfaction. She hadn't raised him to be a fool, but now he was showing: even her beautiful boy was his father's child. She hurled the broom down upon the floor before marching back to his side.
Exhaling slowly, Valentina knew well she'd need to manage herself in order to best manage him. She strolled forward, seating herself upon his bed, a touch more serene than she'd been mere moments ago. Still, she made no bother to conceal that she was cross. A little of that would do her argument good, she had no doubt.
"A most alarming bit of scuttlebutt has reached my ears." She paused, letting her words soak in. "Is it true that you wish to throw away you entire future?" Valentina leaned forward, cradling her son's face in both her hands. "I want to give you the world. That's all I've ever wanted." Her hands dropped away, she straightened. "But there are others who wish to take everything away from you. My son, you do not know the whiles of women. You are a good person who sees the good in others, even when it is but a shadow of hope -- a callow reflection of your good in another. Nothing more. Do not be taken in."
She paused. "Though I know you could never be so foolish as to be beguiled by so obvious a counterfeit of goodness as that which your eldest stepsister flounts about," she began, coolly arching her brow. "I have nevertheless heard it said that you have promised away all your life and hopes and future to that conniving little slattern. Tell me the truth, my darling, darling boy," she added, placing her hand upon his, eyes and voice turning now to pleading. Tears prick her eyes and she was glad. Let him see what he had done to her. "Tell me this is an awful mistake. Whatever may be, we can still make all things right."

aslfkjslafjsdlfjsda omg all of this!!!!
I can also see where she starts to notice Cassimir more when she sees him with Guin/sees Valentina pushing that relationship, too? Not that Roderick would ever allow a marriage between Guin and Cassimir, so idk if she'd be too worried about this situation nearly as much as the Sonya/Roderick thing (which is way more likely) but I'm sure she doesn't want Guinevere to get with anyone and have any kids of her own (I mean, we all know that this is where the poison comes in but still ;DD)
ANYWAY, yeah ngl Cassimir could soooo totally be manipulated by Amira super easily!!! I feel like he's not always super trusting of people, but he does let his guard down around women ... particularly beautiful, royal women and ngl he probs will think that Amira is in love with him, too, if she throws around too many compliments his way #facepalm and he will probably think that he can eventually manipulate Amira for his own purposes down the line but then before he knows it, she's probs slipping stuff into his drinks ;DDD (
OOC | Amira & Cassimir
amira: who??
no, but as i was saying to kate [ in my post to aoife ], im not sure amira knows much abt the malconaires and, unless she knows the princes (including her son!) spend all their free time there, she probs doesn't think much abt them except that they're probs scheming just like everyone else and can't be trusted just like everyone else alksjdflkjsdf she also wouldn't give a flying fig abt all godfrey's plots and schemes to use them she just...doesn't care, doesn't see how others are feeling, doesn't give af, she just wants power. so the most useful any of them could be in her mind is as like blackmail/bargaining chips to maneuver the varmonts.
the thing she ~will notice is when sonya starts maneuvering to pull an amira and get a married man to take her as her bride and then amira will be like 'that's my move, bitch,' and start poisoning her to make sure she doesn't conceive laksdjflkjdsfjkdsf
as soon as she realizes sonya's play, tho (possibly as soon as at the ball that's currently going on? since valentina will likely push sonya at roderick there), amira will start watching ~all the malconaires v closely and sizing them all up as potential rivals and tryna see what she can and can't get from them all, and atp she's more likely to start wanting to stir the pot in their lives and paying attention to who their allies are, etc etc and that's when she'll notice the varmont boys are there a LOT. i think her goal will be to use eithne to distract and manipulate arthur, frankly, (and aoife for sebastian, but that likely won't impact cassimir much).
this will be where cassimir will come in, bc as a rival for eithne's affections, he could prove terribly useful to her in maneuvering arthur where and how she likes. the specifics will probs depend on where things are when she starts paying attention to them and how she wants to move arthur at that given moment, but i think she'll want to at turns advise and thwart cassimir re: his affections to give and remove hope from arthur, galvanize him to action or not, etc. i do think that amira is v manipulative and can pull this off pr much in her sleep hahaha bc she's gotten good at pulling arthur's strings and just...playing the game in general over the years, etc, but i do think she'll decide to take a trip to the estate as soon as things have come together, 'to sample the native delights of our fine empire,' and get herself more closely acquainted w all the various malconaires, and begin manipulating ~them immediately akjlsdfkljdfad
anyway, i def think she'll believe that she can manipulate cassimir pr easily w a few well placed compliments and tips honestly lakjskjlfsdf i think she got good at reading ppl long ago and she'll believe that all he really wants is for someone to underpin his importance and, as a queen, she's in a good position to do that, yknow? so that'll probs more or less be her play at least at first honestly hahaha

Cassimir's heart beat so loudly in his own chest, he was certain Eithne could hear it too.
He'd been uncertain of her feelings until this moment. He had not been blind to the moment that she left his side -- it had been as soon as he asked her if there was any lady she knew who might wish to be the mistress here and he felt he knew that her reaction was indicative of her own feelings.
She wished the position, for herself, didn't she?
What Cassimir had not realized that while this was very much true, Eithne had no desire to be his wife and, if she ever would accept his hand, it would be despite the fact that their union meant that she would be his wife and not because of that alone.
"I do," He said, earnestly, rising from his seat. And he did mean that. He knew that the way things were running was unsustainable. Even his mother must one day come to terms with the fact that the money would not last forever and the only way for them to truly benefit from this land would be to make sure that all of its inhabitants were taken care of.
"Eithne, I swear it. I swear it will one day rival the glory days of your father." Silently, he meant to prove that he was even a better steward of the land than Lord Malconaire had ever been and prove that he should have been named his heir. However, even Cassimir knew better than to say such things to Eithne, now.
It breaks my heart to see it in such a state.
At her words, Cassimir found himself going to her, wishing he could take her in his arms and somehow take away all of her cares. Instead, her found himself taking her hand into his own. "No woman in all of Astaira would make a better Lady of Malconaire than you, Eithne. No one loves or cares for it more. Eithne," He dropped upon his knee, "please do me the honor of becoming my wife? I have loved you like no other. And I know we will be happy here ... that we will be happy together. I can give you everything you ask. I promise you, I will not let Malconaire slip further into disrepair. How could I, with you by my side?"
Time seemed to stand still, as he waited for her answer.

VALENTINA/CASSIMIR BACKSTORY:
I didn't have much about Valentina's husband/her kids dad (and whether she's had two or three marriages at this point, I'll leave up to you!) But I did always imagine that Valentina had a much stronger hold on her children than their dad ever did. And whether this was because he was distant or cruel or spineless, I'm not sure but I do know that Cassimir was shaped so much by his mom!!
(ok but literally crying though imagining roderick ~gifting~ the castle/riverbend area back to sonya only to really put like edmund in charge of it lakjflasdjflsjflsdjf what a move)
VALENTINA REFUSING TO HELP HER OWN PEOPLE WHEN RODERICK ATTACKED HER SIDE!!!!! yeah, this would def piss Lord M off and ngl I feel like he at least helped harbor any refugees from Roderick's attack post-attack and did what he could for them in terms of relief aide
I also think that Lord M did want to be a good dad to her children though, and took his responsibility of them seriously and while I don't 'think he ever had any plans to replace Eithne with Cassimir as heir, I do think he tried to take Cassimir under his wing and any good decisions Cassimir has ever made with the estate have legit been due to his instructions
And while he would NOT be a good steward of the Malconaire lands, he is wayyy better than Valentina and would always take Eithne's wishes into consideration
I also think that Cassimir probably respected (and even grew to love??) Lord M, especially since his mom seemed to care so much for him, too???
I can see Valentina being supportive of this relationship, too??? (Maybe she even had hopes that when Lord M adopted her kids that Cassimir would inherit??)
But I do think that the relationship between Cassimir/Lord M eventually deteriorated and ngl I feel like it was Valentina's fault?? Possibly after her relationship w/ him got to the point where it was clear that it was broken forever haha and she turned them against each other somehow??? (Even her just telling Cassimir that Lord M decided that he didn't want to even adopt him, let alone name him heir or something b/c he was disappointed in Cassimir or something??? But yeah, I feel like Valentina fractured that relationship and most of the progress Lord M had made with Cassimir was lost!)
THE CONQUEST OF ASTAIRA
Okay, originally I had thought that Cassimir would have fought in the battle, but now I think maybe not????
Like if his relationship w/ Lord M had been broken, he'd still be bitter about it lbr and I can see Lord M trying to encourage him to go and fight and Cassimir's last words to him was probably like, "I'm not Astairan ... and I'm not your son."
He would have done what he could to make sure his mom and step-sisters were all okay during the battles and protected the estate, itself, if it came to that but he gave up fighting in the actual war
I DO think he definitely would have let Eithne back in when she came home!!! (and honestly the rest of the girls)
With Eithne though, I can even see him having left in search of her and possibly "saved" her by bringing her back safely
CASSIMIR/EITHNE MARRIAGE
ngl at this point it isn't a matter of if, but when
cassimir is gonna ask poor eithne to marry her and he will also listen to all of her conditions b/c he is prepared to a) get her no matter the cost and b) make her happy
he does foresee his mother's anger but he also feels like he can work it over with her but ngl that paired with the fact that he is kinda afraid that she might say no at first have kept him from having asking her already
but I'm CRYING b/c Eithne feels like she needs to marry him for her people and asjflaskdfjlsajflasfj ugh
ooc || eithne & malconaire & i guess some family history?!
not even sure if this is meant to be an ooc thread with anyone or just some rambling of my thoughts that all stem out of me thinking "i need something for eithne beyond being sad and nice and pretty"? anyway, since its relating TO the malconaire estate & i'm realizing as i'm typing sort of the family history, here it is for everyone?!
i realize that i've been operating under the assumption that the Malconaire Estate is comparable to like an english country estate with tenants and farms and even a village of some sort with the family obviously still living in the manor/main house which may not be what the intention was?
but, continuing on the idea of a country estate style life for malconaire, clearly its gone a bit downhill since the war-- i don't know if the battle where lord m died took place ON (or near?) his landholdings but if that's the case then it could be some of the farmlands/tenant rentals/or even the village maybe? were damaged during the battle(s) an obviously valentina has had NO interest in spending her $$$ on estate improvements when she could buy herself nice things!!! but then obviously the estate is not bringing in much (any?!) money currently hence here we are.
anyway re: eithne & her role/relationship with the estate. since we've established she was meant to be her father's heir, she started learning how the estate operated with her father as soon as she was old enough-- probably starting doing things just like checking in on tenants, etc and then moving on to learning about managing the financial side of things and some knowledge about farming (i guess i've just decided they'd farm the lands?!) and really just instilling the idea that they are the caretakers of the land and the people who live there (which since i think we've established the malconaires are an old astairian family definitely harkens back to that idea of the ruling class caring for the citizens who care for the guardians!)
basically it was straight up engrained in eithne that she must carry on the responsibility of caring for malconaire and she was up for the challenge but now with this sus "will" naming cassimir the heir popping up and watching the whole thing get run into the ground of the past two years.. yeah its not great. i think she has some guilt regarding this but she knows that there isn't much she can DO to get control of the estate back (#thanksroderick) so she's been doing the best she can to try and keep some of it together. and while her sisters well being is very important to her and their safety in comfort is a big factor in her decision making for the future, feeling as if she needs to stay and take care of malconaire is a factor as well
if/when @forgottencassimir proposes, its definitely mostly for the good of the estate and all the people who still live there and depend on them for survival! even if the kindest richest most handsome man ever (who somehow has three extra castles for her sisters to live in!) showed up and proposed marriage to her, it would be very hard for her to abandon her family history and obligations to the estate for cassimir & valentina to take. i do think eithne will maybe have some conditions she will make with cassimir before the wedding which probably will ruffle valentina's feathers more than anything? (honestly step one: valentina moves into whatever version of the dowager house exists. step two: valentina gets a modest allowance, haha!) among she wants to re-employ any of the servants valentina has fired (honestly imagining that eithne does what she can to provide for them if they haven't found new jobs or left entirely!) and promote @forgottencillian to the state's steward (which in my mind was her father's plan that never got to happen because again #thanksroderick)
anyway, this is a bunch of rambling and i'm open to adapting anything of course especially regarding to WHAT malconaire estate actually is because this was all just in my head assumption nonsense, haha :)

Cassmir watched, nearly trance like, as Eithne placed her hand upon his. She had never shown him this kind of affection before and he was half distracted by it. He heard her words, but all he could think of was how much he liked feeling her soft hands upon his own.
Slowly, he lifted his gaze to meet Eithne's -- her eyes bright and blue and beautiful.
If he could have gifted her the world, that was the moment to ask it of him. As for her simple requests, he would grant it in an instant if it had been in his power to do so.
"I have every intention of seeing it done. All of it." And there was much truth in this. Even Cassimir could see that his mother, perhaps, spent too much beyond their own means. But he understood her reasonsings -- he understood the importance for them not to appear as paupers. Especially if Sonya was to one day marry the emperor.
But Cassimir did not -- and could not -- wait until that moment before he started making improvements here. For now, Roderick was too consumed with his own impending political match to have the leisure to pursue Sonya for pleasure. And as stubborn and headstrong as Eilionora Stafford could be, Cassimir was not expecting a wedding to be announced anytime soon.
He knew that for the estate to truly return to its glory days, it would need its full workforce. But there was a problem. The estate was not his, fully, until he married.
"Your father's will states that I am not to fully inherit everything until I am married."
His mother had written that part in. She told him that it would look more legitimate if Lord Malconaire left the estate to his wife and then, only to his son, when he was married. It must not look like it is too much in your favor, She had said. As with most things, Cassimir conceded to this, without considering how much in his mother's own favor this was. He also hadn't expected for it to have taken him so long to find a wife.
"Eithne," He breathed her name. He felt his heart beating in his chest and he wondered -- had he now the courage to propose? To ask her now to be his wife? Had this been her way of telling him that she wished it to be so?
At the last moment, he lost his nerve and managed a laugh instead, "I don't suppose you know of a young lady who would want to be mistress of all of this?" He was teasing, yes, but he hoped that she might be bold enough to tell him that she did.
For a Moment with You | Cassimir & Eithne

HAHAH the anger issues and his unpredictable mood probably does have a lot to do with it haha
I completely agree!!! I feel like Aoife runs under the radar a LOT and she's def overheard a lot of personal conversations between Valentina and Cassimir!!!! For the most part, I feel like Cassimir doesn't even realize she's THERE but if he does and it is sensitive info, he probably is slightly threatening and like "do not speak a word of this to your sisters or ELSE" or whatever and feels that this act of intimation is enough to work on someone like Aoife and he's not too worried about it!
I also feel like Aoife probably tried the hardest and the longest of the girls to make this family thing work??? And even though I feel like her attempts were probably more subtle than her sisters, I don't think that they were completely lost on Cassimir and tbh I do think that he does appreciate that from her? I do think even Cassimir realizes that their is a clear divide amongst their family, but he def blames Brigit (and even Rose) for that divide more than his mom who made them all actual servants aslkfjlsjf but I do think in his idealized future, Aofie gets to live our her happy ending too -- not only for Eithne's sake, but for her own? (And happy ending totally means being Eithne's companion for life OR being married off to a wealthy man w/ a title and connections that Cassmir can take advantage of ... but at least he doesn't want her literally dead like Brigit or just out of the picture like Rosie????? i guess????)
Eventually, I would love for Aoife to have a hand in Cassimir's downfall though -- like obviously she has the documents, but she'll probably also overhear some stuff that can be used against him and I hope she does!!! Cassimir would literally never see it coming!!!
ooc | Cassimir & Aoife
honestly cassimir probably likes aoife???
She's def #2 in the Malconaire step-sisters ranking list. She doesn't ever really give him any trouble and is certainly the most obedient of the girls. Plus, I think he would really appreciate all of the help she's given his mom over the years, etc. etc.
I do think he probably forgets about her sometimes since she's so quiet (#facepalm / #beststepbroaward), but when he does bother to remember her, I feel like he's try to be kind to her? I think he also thinks that she actually likes him (not cassimir out here probably mistaking aoife feeling intimidated by him as affection????) and knows that he's already burned bridges with both rose and brigit, so he does like to keep the aoife/cassimir relationship in a good place. especially since one day, he's hoping both rose and brigit will be sent far away from here, but aoife can def stay to keep her sister company/keep her happy, because she's literally never been any trouble, ever!!!
(meanwhile she's secretly a badass who holds the key to reveal just how shady he and his mom are!!!!! literally the last malconaire either of them would ever suspect!!!!! in this vein, I also think Cassimir COMPLETELY underestimates Aoife and doesn't think she'd ever really stand up for herself/is someone who could be bullied into doing things if it ever came down to it, but Cassimir also doesn't even think he'd have to go that far w/ her because she's so kind and shy and just generally trusting of everyone, in his opinion??)
