Hello! After some prodding, we’d like to take a crack at getting this blog up and running again. It had such a brief run back in…2016? But it was a lot of fun. As a reminder, this blog is for rare/unusual romantic or otherwise intimate pairings of characters from Final Fantasy VIII. We’ve had submissions pertaining to everything from Seifer:Ellone to (an above-age-of-consent, non-incestuous version of) Laguna:Squall that was actually quite fascinating. If your preferred pairing is controversial, but otherwise common [for example Seifer:Quistis or Squall:Quistis] we’ll accept those too, as long as you have a unique/in-depth analysis, memoir, or other artistic/critical expression to communicate about it. Feel free to read through the archives! Finished!! 8D This is highly influenced by various conversations with @vcook10 - and I fear we both will go down with this ship… 

Quistis Trepe and Irvine Kinneas from Final Fantasy VIII - 10 years after the events of the game.  Quistis was already a SeeD and an instructor. After the events of the game Irvine also took the SeeD exams in Balamb (he was from Galbadia and they didn’t train SeeDs). Things led to them working together in several missions. Their friendship started a little rocky and turned into some sort of “friends with benefits” … before both of them realized that there is more between them than both of them thought.  But they are foremost mercenaries… after the threat of Artemisia is over they mostly deal with surveillance and personal security operations - in the top secret categories that nobody knows someone has a bodyguard assigned or is being watched.  Irvine’s sharp shooting skills are also handy every now and then - though this are the REALLY top secret cases. 

Over various messenger sessions @vcook10 and I already somehow created a whole backstory for the two and this is surely not the last picture of them - though it will be for a while since I have quite a few other pictures to take care of now ;)

Ragamuffin Gunner Returning Home Like A Hungry Runaway

Selphie wakes up at sea, the bed pitching beneath her, plunging and diving with the yaw and roll of the waves. In the pit of her stomach, another ocean’s tide is racing. “Super-duper-mega-bummer,” she mutters, as she pulls herself upright.

As she does, the nausea comes up with her. “Super-duper-MEGA-bummmer!” louder this time, but muffled because one hand is clasped over her mouth, the other grabbing for support as the door psishes open in front of her. The smell from the cafeteria - hot dogs boiling - hits her in the face, meaty and overpowering, and she feels her stomach clench, her gorge rise, and suddenly she is being sick, heaving and retching and the shudder in her shoulders and the tears stinging her eyes.

“How much did I even drink?” she mutters, scowling at the mess on the floor, pushing back the hair that is curling into her face.

But it’s not a hangover, and she knows it. She’s known it for days, ever since she’d started to notice the tenderness in her breasts, how tired she was feeling, how often she needed to pee.

“But it was a dream, goddamnit!” she mutters again, angrily. “A stupid dream!” Such a nice dream, the first one, and Sir Laguna was sooo cool, and she’d kind of put it out of her mind, what Squall had said afterwards. And then he’d fallen from the cliff, and she’d been sooo worried, so worried that she’d gone to sleep every night worrying, worrying that he had drowned, or that he was lying tangled and broken on the wet rocks, dying a slow and agonising death, his hair floating in the water aroung him like weeds. None of them had noticed. She was a better actor than that.

But then the thing had happened, and she wasn’t sure that somehow Squall didn’t know. She had gone to sleep worrying, worrying that Laguna was still lying at the foot of the cliff, beautiful and dead, and when she woke up the sunlight was fingering in through the big windows that opened onto the balcony and the man in the bed was smiling at her, his shy kind smile that he only ever smiled when he thought no-one could see. He saw her looking and glanced away, pushing himself upright on his elbows and wincing with the effort of it. His dressings needed changing.

She had unwound the long bandage from around his chest, and was peeling away the pad when he had cried out, softly, and tightened his grip on her arm. Without thinking, she’d taken him in her arms, as though it was the most natural thing in the world, and there she was, holding him, making comforting noises into the cascade of his hair, pushing him gently back down into the pillows, kissing the startled protest off his lips, her fingers digging into his thigh as it spasmed.

Afterwards, they’d lain together dappled in the sunlight, listening to the quiet sounds of the little town outside the window. He’d opened his mouth once or twice, trying to speak, but each time the words had died on his lips and she’d watched him as he fell back to sleep, pale, still healing, tired by what they’d just done. She’d stayed by him, only meaning to watch him for a little while.

“Only a dream,” Selphie groaned again, as another wave of nausea surged through her.

This is Old News if you know me...

First off, hats off to you guys for making this happen! 

So, as some of you may know (cause it’s almost all I talk about) I am a very proud Squall/Selphie shipper. 

When I first started playing and there was that cute scene where they bump into each other in the hall, they run into each other during the mission, and then she shows up in his ROOM. I gushed like crazy.

For a while I thought they were gonna get together until Rinoa showed up. As a 13 year old I wasn’t pleased, but whatever. I learned to love Rinoa as time went on. 

Squall and Selphie are like counterparts. I write them kind of like Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher from Uncharted (Another series I am a die hard fan of). They are like almost cut from the same mold. Mind you, Selphie is cheery whereas Squall…is not. I love to play off the fact that both are hiding behind masks-very different ones, but masks all the same. Squall is scared getting close to people.  Selphie wants people to think she’s always okay; she wasn’t really around much after Trabia was hit. She WAS found mourning her friends deaths in Trabia Garden. They two actually get along really well for the most part, and they are both leaders.

I like to think since they have SOME similarities. I picture them butting heads from time to time when paired up for a mission or something. Selphie may not take something seriously enough, and Squall might not like that. She’s also sassy and a bit flirty. I usually like to use this as comic relief and get Squall really uncomfortable in serious situations or when Selphie takes the lead on something they have to do, and it gets them into trouble. 

I find writing them as a couple challenging yet really fun. I mean, the challenging part for me is to make Selphie a little bit more serious when something bad happens. I found that balancing her personality with some maturity when its appropriate the way to go. 

I learnt this from a writer named Kount Xero on FFN, who writes Squall and Selphie very well. This writer actually just completed their whole series which starts with Estranged. 

Their Squall is a badass character. He’s the leader of SeeD, and he fucking knows it. The writer experiments with a vulnerable Squall who outwardly acts as a fierce leader to the massive organization. Squall’s written in such a militaristic fashion, but when he’s with Selphie, he’s a kitten. The series does a great job on how he matures from a 18 year old guy who just got his heart broken to a 40 year old leader who still struggles with his  past decisions, but still kicks ass. 

Selphie, on the other hand, is written to be more mature. She starts off as the girl we know and love, but as she grows up the battles start to catch up with her mentally. The writer justifies that women who use even junctioned magic can’t have children due to a mutilated womb, meaning that she can’t have kids. Selphie eventually has to live with the fact that she has to play with the hands she’s dealt and be a SeeD because that is what she was designed for. 

I have a ton of fun experimenting with this pairing, and I know and seen even other people write them, too. If you’re down, give them a shot. I would love to read it or hear what you guys think of this pairing!

Also, give Estranged a shot. The series is very well written, and I’m sure Kount would appreciate it.

My sister likes Zell/Fujin, and a bit of Seifer/Ellone. I was always a tad partial to Seifer/Ellone too, but ESPECIALLY Selphie/Seifer, even though I like her with Irvine... Funny thing to consider; if Seifer got with Ellone (let's pretend Squall didn't kill him for trying) that would kind of make the two boys sort of like brother-in-laws. Talk about awkward holidays in that family. Throw Laguna into the mix and then it's a recipe for disaster.

Oh my god…that last one [Seifer/Ellone] is a familial trainwreck and I’d read it in a heartbeat. So would that make Fujin and Raijin like weird godparents? Triple awkward if you added Zell/Fujin into that mix. Someone do that, but seriously.

I’ve only seen Seifer/Selphie as a joke, but given the right circumstances it makes a weird amount of sense? She’s one person I can see him having a hard time keeping up with, and if she had eyes for him, he’d be in some trouble, no doubt!

this isn't really a "weird" ship, but is it bad that I still ship Laguna and Julia moreso than Laguna and Raine? it's just... two cinnamon rolls who'd gab about their DREAMS in a hotel room instead of... y'know? you can't give me dat fluff and then expect me to move on...?? (also, I love Squinoa... help me)

I don’t think that’s bad at all. I mean, especially if you’re going AU about it, I think it’s interesting to imagine what might’ve happened if Laguna and Julia had actually gotten the chance to be together. Would it have even worked? Who knows, but I can absolutely dig it.

Anyone out there who is awake and has “weird” FFVIII ships? If so, pitch me your ship, because I am curious.
