“Golden Rule” My concentration was a series of portraits of my friends, in which I tried to visually communicate not only their character, but how they choose to search for identity as teens. In this piece, I chose to only paint my friend’s face in order to remove any assumptions the viewer may make based upon things like his hair length, or his ear piercings or fashion sense. However, I am not unaware of the mask-like feeling that this gives the faces. While each face can be interpreted as just that, a face, I left the eyes and mouth intentionally blank to suggest that these emotionless faces may not be the truest insight into his personality. I painted three of these faces in order to communicate the multiplicity of his personality, but left them overlapping to show that he is not entirely despondent. In the composition, the gold rectangle is meant to show the things that society values and respects, whereas the black is representative of the things that are often less respected. While this friend’s character, as represented by the masks, falls mostly in the gold rectangle, the color, and indeed this friend, are both bolder when they overlap the black exterior instead. It should also be noted that this friend’s eyes are gold regardless of whether they are inside the golden box or not, showing that they are not empty holes, but are truly gold no matter the circumstances. However, the space where all three faces overlap is black despite being in the golden box, demonstrating the chaos he brings into everyday life.
