When creating speculative biology art, how well do you research the subject it’s based upon?
Common knowledge: things everyone might know
Minimal research: basic why’s and how’s your subject works, surface depth things
Extensive research: specific anatomical terminology, similar real-life species, information digestible to other spec bio artists (but might be confusing to those who are not)
Complete research: evolutionary lineages, intricate anatomical similarities to real-life species, extensive environmental/individual behavior, information may be confusing to those lacking knowledge in biology

If we discover alien life, what will it  look like?  We have no way of knowing, but the hunt for extraterrestrial life can now include purple bacteria, according to a group of astronomers who are recording the chemical makeup unique to the lavender-hued organisms. These microbes may have dominated Earth early on in our planet's history and are well-suited to emerge on faraway worlds that circle dim red stars smaller than our sun, a new study suggests. The latest cataloging effort is in part "to create a database for signs of life to make sure our telescopes don't miss life if it happens not to look exactly like what we encounter around us every day," study co-author Lisa Kaltenegger of Cornell University said in a statement. "Purple bacteria can survive and thrive under such a variety of conditions that it is easy to imagine that on many different worlds, purple may just be the new green."

Don't get stuck on a scene
Not in the mood to write the scene you’re working on? Don’t worry about it! Make some notes and move on.
There is no shame in just jotting down the main points in a scene and revisiting it later. It’s ok to just not be feeling it sometimes.

A collection of panels devoted to the true hero of Refugium - BETTY THE GOAT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the animals commonly brought to colony worlds by human settlers is the working or "super" goat - a sort of all-purpose farm beast, genetically modified for the purpose. The Super Goat's souped up digestive tract makes it capable of thriving off of sparse, varied, (and occasionally extraterrestrial) forage, and its large, robust build makes it well suited to draft labour (at the logging camps featured in "refugium", the goats serve as "line horses" - carrying cables out to felled trees, which are then dragged by said cables using "steam donkeys" - portable steam engines on skids.)
(In the page below, you can spot a "steam donkey" resting above the woodpile, there on the landing)

But these gigantic goats aren't just built for work - they are tremendously productive milk producers, and their rapid growth rate makes them excellent meat animals, as well. Without the Super Goat, life on the planet Altamira would be a lot less liveable. So give a moment to think about the humble yet intergalactic goats of the Euhumanist league. Spare a moment...

growth stages of the Zaabua. The more a Zaabua comes to age the longer their necks grow and the balder they get. They also get bigger in body size (as expected) and their fur becomes long and shaggy. The babies do not support these bold bellies as the adults and elders do, as they do not support the body fat to maintain enough heat. Therefore they are all fur and legs and reply on the warmth of others, this being one of the easier things to do seeing how they are a social animal that live in groups.
Later on in life when the Zaabua start to reach its teen years it begins to loose hair on its neck, which is often a indication of its age. The older the teen the bolder the tummy. They also begin to loose more of their juvenile spots and their neck begins to extend.
After reaching adult stage they have stored enough layers of fat to keep them warm throughout the endless cold weather and allowing them to loose all the fur on their neck and tummies. I will disclose to why they loose this hair later on and risk the chance of getting cold but I will keep this a mystery as of now. As believe me it is def valid or the reason that I have for them.
Tumblr media
The final stage and EXTREMELY rare chance of any Zaabua to go through, is the ANCIENT stage of the Zaabua life cycle. For many reasons this stage is vary difficulty to get to such as death from natural causes or not enough resources to grow its body to such size and age. But the vary lucky few that do manage to reach this sense of wisdom with the help of good genes, life style, and diet.

The Marshy Soapfish. A slow moving predatory and surface dwelling gourami that is completely incapable of diving underwater due its fat contents being incredibly absurd. These fishes have a symbiotic relationship with ferns, grasses, liveworts and mosses. As they use them to look like floating matts of vegetation.
