New sculptural installation coming along just in time for the formative assessments tomorrow. Bit of a shame we arnt able to have it physically with all of our works, and have to go digital due to Corona however, on the positive side the piece has turned out a lot better then how I first expected. . I found the materials both stretched and held strongly together and created a tention between the space which felt intense. I loved this, as it instantly reminded me of the constant pressures which i feel a larger person is put under in a western prejudice society. It also allows the viewers to consider this tention with the materials in relation the the flour. More playing around with the tights and flour. I decided to work backwards and see how the flour reacts in comparison to how the foam did. I also thought about the decision of the chair. It creates a link to how when we sit down our bellies lump over. . Moving on I want to see how it would look if I mixed these two sculptures together, creating a belly and legs in the sculpture. Seeing how the tights with flour in them fell from the beams as I tossed them off gave me a idea of viewing the work on the opposite. (Laying on the floor.) . I chose to group them in a pile to resemble how fat when its pressured lumps over, or bulges out in places which arnt in a natural shape. . I'm in two minds about this way of viewing them. There are positives and advantages of both ways? Finally decided today was the day to take down 'Untitled'. However it turns out from this destruction I ended up creating another experiment with my belt I was wearing. . Honestly I think this would work a lot better if I were to add more of the tights to the tangled ones hanging, therefore it would buldge out more when I tighten the top creating a more recognisable image ( that of a belly when a belt is tied too tight at the waist. Squishhhyy. . Balloon, flour and water. . Moving on from the experiments simply with the flour weighing down the balloon, I decided to see how water will react with the foam within a balloon with no mixing except the indentations of my hand. . I honestly do love the texture and the way you can feel the lumps within the flour, it reminds me and many others of my peers of body fat. It may be time for me to consider using water within my other experiments to judge if this could work for me further in my practice. I'm really excited about this though. Busy few days ahead. . P.s. Balloons filled with flour. Turns out balloons dont expand when you put 3 bags of flour in them 😂 However, I did find out they look like breasts. . This work reminds me of how there is so much expectations for how a fat / a skinnier person should look like. I personally have felt pressure and felt like my body was wrong due to my breasts not being the "ideal" for a larger women... Unintentionally, I have began a thought process beginning to look at the expectations of the body, even if it isnt the "ideal". 'Inside', 2020 . Reflecting on some or my previous experimentation with jam and tights, I noticed a resemblance to the humans inner organs. I wanted to experiment with seeing the materials in a different manner. While laying the tights filled with jam ontop of eachother I was reminiscing how I feel my fat looks to others and myself in the mirror. Focusing on my belly, I layered them as much as I could into a shape representing my overhanging belly. (P.s. just realised the photo is on its side, ops.) . I often am positive with fat and I still do believe in the fact that every body should be loved, and that fat is merely a substance. Yet I do too get days where I dislike my fat, and I guess I havnt spoke about that in my work before. However, today was one of those days and therefore 'inside' was produced. And after a long hard think about this piece I've realised how important it is to know it's okay to not feel 100% all the time.
