“Oh, you know, you realize that grief is perhaps the last and final translation of love. And I think, you know, this is the last act of loving someone. And you realize that it will never end. You get to do this, to translate this last act of love for the rest of your life. And so, you know, it's– really, her absence is felt every day.
“And ever since I lost her, I felt that my life has been lived in only two days, if that makes any sense. You know, there's the today, where she is not here, and then the vast and endless yesterday where she was, even though it's been three years since. How many months and days? But I only see it in — with one demarcation. Two days — today without my mother, and yesterday, when she was alive. That's all I see. That's how I see my life now.”

For declan ship wednesday, can we request a little post greywaren jordeclan?
“It hurts,” Declan murmured.
Jordan looked up from her canvas, a single earbud spitting something vulgar and gritty in her ear. Nevertheless, she’d heard those single two words, which must have been mindlessly thrown out to the world, because Declan wasn’t even looking at her. He was on her favorite couch in all of the Barns, a hastily purchased (or dreamt) 1930s piece, with curves and stained cherry wood, velour in a heinous shade of salmon. It looked like something pristine, put-together Declan Lynch would never sit on. And certainly not in a tatty pair of sweatpants nor a band t-shirt, both borrowed from Ronan.
Jordan had looked up the band when he came to languish in her studio, and it was still playing when she put down her brush.
“You dyin’, mate? Blink twice if you need 911-what’s-your-emergency.”
Declan’s head tilted toward her. He only blinked once, slowly, like a cat. He hadn’t noticed he’d said anything. He hadn’t gelled his hair for days, and she liked the way his curls went wherever they fell. What she didn’t like were the circles under his eyes and the way he often let his hand come to rest on his side. He wasn’t pretending, but he also wasn’t trying.
Her brain conjured up the way he would say, I’m fine as his entire world hadn’t been picked apart at the seams and set ablaze. He was a free man, he was dead, he was hers, but he wasn’t anybody’s when he was a ghost.
Jordan perched gently on the edge of the couch, and he instinctively moved to make room for her. She kissed first his temple, then the untended scruff at the line of his jaw.
“What I know of these things,” she said, speaking of gunshot wounds and loss and everything she knew turned upside down, “is that it’s gonna.”
“What?”
Declan looked at her, this time actually seeing her, and she loved the mess of him, the complexity of him, the all of him. Even the things he didn’t want her to see.
“Hurt,” she said. “But hurting doesn’t always mean alone. Just like being alone doesn’t always hurt.” Jordan touched his hand now, covering it over the wound. “Tell me a story, Pozzi.”
Declan smiled at her then, not a Boston smile, a politician’s smile or even a museum smile. He smiled like a creature growing up at the Barns – growing up a Lynch – would smile.
He told her a story, and for a little while, it didn’t hurt.

In which Scylla confesses to harboring a fondness for Calypso
Scylla’s mouth, she thinks, pressed against her own, must have been crafted from the gentlest currents, from water so slick it is reminiscent of silk and feathers.
Calypso is the one to back away this time, and she smooths her thumb over the nymph’s mouth. What work the Fates did, crafting her and her kiss. How long did it take, to complete her design? “So you bore of mortal eyes,” she says.
Scylla nods, though it wasn’t quite meant as a question.
“And,” she continues, as though the other had not responded at all, “you decided to take me as deterrent.”
That was a question. A little hidden, a little bit of a puzzle, but there’s an answer she’s waiting to hear all the same.
The nymph’s face flushes. “Not just for that.”
Calypso arches a brow high, skims her thumb over her cheekbone, hooks her fingers around her jaw to tilt Scylla’s face up in longing tease of another kiss. To thicken the mood, give the implication that she is willing to give another, once the moment ripens. “What else then?”
“You.”
Coral spiking in her chest, edges sharp. “Oh?”
Her chin presses down against the fingers holding her jaw. To hide? It’s too late for that. “Yes. I-- I want you,” Scylla presses, “the way all the men want me.”
“Women too,” Calypso corrects, because it’s never just men that soak in the sight of Fately beautiful women, no matter what the stories say.
