PT. 3: Max, thank you for navigating me through many different environments, alerting and responding accordingly to medical episodes, retrieving dropped items, and much more. Thank you for always helping me with everything life throws at me. Thank you for always being there when I needed and need you the most. Thank you for being my guiding light in a dark world. You’re the best companion a girl could ever ask for. Thank you for all you’ve done for me throughout the years. I don’t know where I’d be without you. You’ll forever and always be my favorite boy! I’ll forever be grateful for your service. As hard as this transition is on both of us, it’s for the best. I know you would love to continue working because you love doing what you do best, but there comes a time when every working dog needs to fully retire. You’re 12 years old, still very active, and we always get compliments that you don’t act or look your age. As heartbreaking as this transition is for both of us, I’m still very lucky to be keeping him and having him to come home to after a long day. Here’s to more nature walks, playing with friends dogs, practicing shed hunting, playing fetch, laying down in the sun, lounging on the couch, belly rubs, bully sticks, and much more! It broke my heart to hang his harness up. He wagged his tail and was so excited thinking he was going working somewhere. Please be respectful and understanding that retiring a dog, no matter what the reason is, is a very difficult decision. ❤️ Here’s a video compilation of some adventures we’ve had over the years, and some tasks Max does/did for me. PT. 2: He’s been with me through so much, from attending school with me, doing work internships, getting a job and working there together, relationships, breakups, losses of friends or family members, prom, high school graduation, service dog meetups, service dog presentations, hospitalizations and ER visits, medical appointments and tests, tough diagnosis, medical treatments, traveling, and more. Lots of ups and downs, but he’s been with me through it all. We’ve overcome many challenges together, advocated for things I’m passionate about, raised awareness and educated people about service dogs, guide dogs, and many conditions, and more. We’ve had many achievements both big and small that I would not have been able to do without him. Having a guide dog or a service dog is not for “fun”. Service dogs and guide dogs are considered medical equipment. Being a guide/service dog handler comes with a lot of responsibility, unwanted public attention, access issues, and more. It helps improve quality of life and gives handlers more independence. Max has given me SO much freedom, independence, and safety over the past many years. PT. 1: Retirement. It’s the time that every handler dreads. It’s so hard on both the handler and the working dog. That bond they share can and never will be replaced. A day comes where the dog that is retired no longer puts on their working gear and goes with their handler, and be on duty. Their gear gets hung up in its storage place. There will come a time when a new dog will take place to do the same job, and that dog will have ‘big paws’ to fill. Some working dogs retire and go to a different home, others stay with their handler or a family member. Some dogs retire early due, which can be due to many factors. Some dogs are able to work into their senior years as long as they’re healthy and happy working. Max will be remaining with us for the rest of his life! Although he may not be working as my guide/service dog, he’ll still have lots of fun playing with his friends, going for walks and hikes, doing fun activities, and going to pet friendly places as our family pet and companion. He can still do service dog tasks around the home, which he really enjoys doing. He’ll just be taking public duty off his paws and spending more time home being a wonderful loyal companion, that he has always been. He’s been retired fully now for about 2 1/2 months. I just haven’t gotten around to posting about it until now, so my apologies for that. Things have been very busy lately. I’m very grateful and blessed that Max has been able to work, happily and healthy, as long as he has. Bodhi went with me to physical therapy today and he was so good! It was his first time accompanying me to an appointment. He laid down next to/under the table during my appointment. After my appointment, we took a short walk up and down the road while waiting for our ride. He stopped and sat at the curbs. We walked back to PT & sat inside while waiting for mom to pick us up. He was so patient and well behaved. Bodhi has had a few small outings out! He was such a good boy! No carsickness the past 2 or 3 times we’ve gone in the car so that’s definitely improving, thankfully. We passed many barking and lunging dogs, both big and small. he just looked at them, and didn’t care much. He sat at curbs and stopped at the stairs. We even did some confidence building, getting him to walk over grates better today, and even had him climb up and sit on the sleigh display! Max and Bodhi had so much fun with @guidingeyes pup in training, Kazzy the other day! Milo played for a bit, but needed to go inside because he was playing too rough. Today is Thursday, October 15, 2020 White Cane Safety Day 👩🏻🦯 The white cane is a vital tool that helps visually impaired & blind people navigate safely & independently from place to place. During Orientation & Mobility skill training, if you qualify to use a white cane, you will be fit for one that is suited for your height & where you travel most. There are different cane tips that are used for different ground surfaces (sand, gravel, woods, different flooring, etc.). Before qualifying for a guide dog, a legally blind individual must have completed orientation & mobility training & independent travel using a white cane, among other requirements. There are 2 techniques of using a cane, tapping & sweeping. It is really user preference. It also may vary on where you are using your cane & what surface you are walking on. As a blind person, we use our other senses, especially hearing & touch to explore the world around us. Instead of visual cues, we rely on auditory cues, auditory tracking & location, & tactile feedback. I have some very difficult news to share after Milo’s vet appointment today. Milo is officially retired from being my guide/service dog. I don’t want to talk about how or why. Please give me the time I need to process & grieve our working partnership. I’m upset even though I felt this was coming. This was just the finale. The leaves are starting to change color & now foliage is everywhere around us! We took a walk yesterday to stretch our legs & get some fresh air. Today there is a wonderful breeze. PT. 2 of 2 In June of this year, I had a re-evaluation of a bunch of hearing tests requested by my new ophthalmologist, to see if my hearing loss has stabilized or has gotten worse. It got much worse than when I was tested last. They said that I would benefit from a pair of hearing aids instead of just 1 for my left ear. My audiologist said that it was super important to have the right hearing aids & equipment due to the fact that I’m legally blind & need to use my hearing for important localization of noises such as traffic flow. We are still waiting on the genetic test results to come back. They should be hopefully be back by November. My ophthalmologist, audiologist, & ENT highly think that I have a genetic syndrome that causes progressive hearing loss & vision loss. Usher’s Syndrome is one that was mentioned. There are many conditions that can cause those symptoms so it is all being ruled out, or in. We are finding out more about my vision loss as the months go by. More results have been coming back from the vision tests that I’ve been going to Baltimore for. As of right now, my ophthalmologist is thinking it is a rare genetic condition or rare autoimmune condition. He’s thinking Autoimmune Retinopathy or a Cone Rod Dystrophy. There are many systemic conditions, & a metabolic condition that he is considering that include some of my other symptoms as well. He is also collaborating with other doctors about it. He is being very thorough & not leaving any stone unturned. So, here are my new hearing aids! I’ve been meaning on posting this for awhile now, but life got a little hectic. My new hearing aids are @phonak Bolero M90-PR! So far, I’ve been experiencing listening to so many noises I’ve never heard before or haven’t heard in many years! It’s truly amazing! I notice a very big difference when I take them out. These hearing aids have Bluetooth so I can directly stream music, phone calls, & voiceover! It’s awesome! My old ones never did that.
