This New Orleans institution still on the air, it's thriving. It’s all thanks to donations, an army of volunteers and listeners that depend on the very unique services they provide.

This rare radio station—located inside an old Victorian home—plays just about anything, except music. That’s not the only thing that makes WRBH Radio unique; the station uses their resources to help people with a visual impairment. Every day, a stream of volunteers at the station bring listeners just about anything that comes in print, including news headlines, grocery ads and even horoscopes. The station provides local news, as well as national news. That also includes the funnies from national newspapers. The station and its volunteers are making impacts on people’s lives—people like Tim Lindsley, who lost his vision later in life. Lindsley, a loyal listener in Thibodaux, Louisiana, says not only does WRBH bring him the news he can no longer read, it also brings a companion, of sorts, into his home. People drive me insane. "You're in pain? Take some medicine." As if I haven't tried literally every over the counter medicine on the market and almost every non-narcotic. My doctor doesn't even know what to do with me anymore.

Funny Question At Eye Doctor
With my condition, I cannot read print for long periods of time. So, I read braille. A medical assistant at my eye doctor's asked how my reading was... so I looked where my fingers were and asked them in my head, "How ya doin' fingers, has reading been good to you?" And then quickly snapped out of it and responded, "I only usually read braille..."

Today I learned that the anti-AI software we're putting in our art interferes with technology for the blind that they use to describe images. :( ALT text and ID's are even more important than ever! I see them well-used here, Xitter, and Bluesky.. but rarely on Facebook. Poke your fam if they don't give IDs. I know I'm gonna be better about it on FB.

Image Alt Text
Gentle reminder: don't forget to add Alt text to your images on social media, so that blind or people with visual impairments know what the image represents.
I know it can sometimes be hard to know what to put, but something is always better than nothing.

Today, we celebrate Louis Braille. He is the inventor of the Braille script, which changed and improved the lives of millions of blind and visually impaired people across the globe.
Braille is not a language. It is a tactical code developed which helps blind and visually impaired people read using 63 unique characters.

World Braille Day 2023. LOUIS BRAILLE (4 JAN, 1809 - 6 JAN, 1852)
World Braille Day 2023.
LOUIS BRAILLE (4 JAN, 1809 - 6 JAN, 1852)
Born in France. He was 3 when he lost his eyes while playing with some tools in his father's workshop.
Braille's system was adopted in 1854, two years after his death.
At the age of 15, he developed the 6-dot fingertip reading system known as the Braille system and it was inspired by a military system of 'Night writing' which assisted soldiers in communicating in the dark without sound and light.
The Encyclopedia Britannica lists him among the "100 Most Influential Inventors of All Time". His birthday is celebrated every year as World Braille Day to recognize his efforts.

I want to be a trainer and that’s the reason why I made this group. I know that there are probably people like me who want to be a trainer, but think that they can’t because they’re blind or have disabilities, but that’s one of the reasons why I made this group so that there is resources and people to help us Achieve that dream and give us the resources that we need. #forcefreedogtraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #fearfreedogtraining #sciencebaseddogtraining #dogtraining #blind #visuallyimpaired #legallyblind #disabled #disabilities https://www.facebook.com/groups/303261141692162/?ref=share https://www.instagram.com/p/CjDkSyiL4uy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My 2nd grader likes to see his name in lights-- Braille lights! I circled holes with whiteout and white paint to make visible braille cells against the black plastic. He thinks it's a fun game but he is learning. #teacherforever #specialistteacher #specialistteacherforvisuallyimpaired #teacherspecialistforvisuallyimpaired #visuallyimpaired #braille #brailleismysuperpower #braillestudent #foreverateacher https://www.instagram.com/p/Ciigb_cJ0Pk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
