Puppy Training Classes And Obedience Training For Adult Dogs: Where To Start
Tumblr media
Why Puppy Training Is Important
A great dog trick can entertain even the toughest canine critic. But, puppy training is about more than dazzling a crowd. Training school teaches your dog important behavioral skills and good manners. Additionally, it exposes them to a variety of other dogs and people so that they’re comfortable in diverse social situations.1
Your puppy’s first three months are crucial to their development. Young dogs are highly impressionable and adept at retaining new information. Exposing your puppy to all sorts of sights, sounds, people, and other dogs will help prepare them for a life as an adult.

How to Housebreak a Puppy or Older Dog
There's no such thing as an almost housebroken dog. Either he is or he isn't. Saying a dog is almost housebroken is like saying your wife is almost pregnant. When a dog is housebroken, he never uses the house for his toilet.
Many people do not understand why their dog does not know what to do when taken outside. Just turning a dog out in the backyard by himself a few times a day is not the way to house train a dog.
Merely taking him outside also does not mean he knows what he's being taken outside for. The biggest problem between the dog and the owner is that the dog would love to please, but he doesn't know how to communicate with you.
Housebreaking in theory is very simple. It is finding a means of preventing the puppy from doing his duties in the house and only giving him the opportunity to do it outside. It also means that the dog learns to communicate with you about going when told to go and about letting you know when he has to go outside.
A dog is a creature of habit and because he learns by association, if his training is consistent, he will quickly learn there is no other place to relieve himself other than outdoors.
We take advantage of a very natural instinct of the dog: his desire to keep his sleeping quarters clean (i.e., not to mess his bed). We offer a dog a den in the form of a dog crate. This becomes his bed that he cannot get out of. If the dog crate is the right size, he will not soil it. Puppies may not initially like it (some will scream their heads off) but within a few days, they will accept it without a problem.
Tumblr media
Dogs are and always have been den and pack animals. Canines naturally and instinctively prefer the shelter of a den. In the wild, the young are raised in dens. They spend a great part of their first year very close to their den. In homes, dogs often choose their den. They will get under a desk, behind a couch, in a closet, etc.
A dog crate is a perfect, natural bed for the dog and a safe, natural spot to put the pet whenever necessary for the dog's safety or the owner's peace of mind.
If you are appalled by the idea of confining him to a cage, let me dispel any idea of cruelty. You are actually catering to a very natural desire on the part of the dog. In his wild state, where does a dog bed down for the night? Does he lie down in the middle of an open field where other animals can pounce on him? No! He finds a cave or trunk of a tree where he has a feeling of security - a sense of protection. The correct use of a crate merely satisfies the dog's basic need to feel safe, protected, snug, and secure.
Now with this said, some puppies will scream their living heads off and others for a couple of days when you put them in the crate. The question you need to answer is, "Would I rather get the dog used to the crate or would I rather clean up dog crap on my rug"? An easy question to answer.
Pups do get over the fact that screaming gets them nowhere, as long as you ignore it and DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF THE CRATE WHEN THEY ARE SCREAMING. If it bothers you, put the crate in the basement or the garage or leave the house for a few hours. Trust me, it will stop when it gets tired. Those who give in create their own problems

A Head to Toe Guide to Washing Your Dog
Tumblr media
While that doggy smell can be completely normal, many dogs do seem to be particularly on the nose. Getting your dog used to regular grooming and bathing from an early age and making sure you have fun doing it will ensure you have happy, healthy and odour free canine companion.
Shampoos and Conditioners
Dogs have skin that is half the thickness of human skin, is very sensitive and has a different pH. You can’t always assume that human products are okay for your pet. Use a good quality and gentle pet shampoo and if your dog is prone to dry skin, greasy skin, frequent skin infections or is itchy, ask your Vet which shampoo is best.
You can also view our guide to dog shampoos for a more detailed look at what shampoos will suit your dog. Conditioners are not really necessary, unless your dog has particularly dry hair. Most pet conditioners are leave-in and can be applied as the coat is drying, or even without washing first.
Where to Bath Your Dog
Smaller dogs can be easily bathed in the laundry sink, a baby bath, the normal bath tub or even the bottom of the shower. Using a non-slip mat can make your pet more secure on the slippery surface. An inside bath allows you to ensure the water is warm, but not warmer than your skin. If it is a nice sunny day, you can wash your pet outdoors and a nice game of fetch or a walk afterwards is a great way to stop them rolling in the garden and will speed up the drying process.
Technique
Keep a hand on your dog at all times when you are washing them. This will make it less likely they will shake all over you and attempt to leap from the bath. Have everything ready before you go and make sure you include a good massage while shampooing and towelling off to make the whole experience pleasurable for your pet. If your dog is a bit worried about bathing, particularly in certain areas, use lots of food rewards to encourage good behavior. If your dog is prone to wiggling and getting water in the ears, place a piece of cotton wool loosely in the ears to avoid getting water down there.
Bath time is a great time to check your pet’s nails, ears, teeth and skin for any abrasions or new lumps and bumps. Systematically feel your pet all over, perhaps while you are doing a nice massage with the shampoo.
Start With These Basics
Hose or handheld spray for the taps if using a sink or bath
Towels
Bathmat or something clean to stand on if outside
Shampoos/conditioners
Brush
Face washer or sponge
Hairdryer if you need a quick dry
Cotton wool
Ear cleaner
Nail clippers
Treats
The Step-by-Step Washing Process
Brush your pet to remove any tangles or debris from the coat.
Get your pet wet, avoiding the head.
Apply a 20c piece amount of shampoo, lathering up all over.
Massage your pet to distribute the shampoo.
Leave on for the recommended length of time.
Meanwhile use a face washer or sponge to wipe down the face (no need for shampoo).
Rinse, making sure all the residue has disappeared.
Stand back and allow your pet to shake.
Towel dry.
Use a hairdryer on a low heat with a brush or take your pet for a walk in the sun to dry.
Check your pet’s ears and remove any cotton wool. If your dog needs an ear clean, check our ear cleaning guide for detailed instructions.
Check your dog’s nails, if they need trimming, follow our step-by step nail trimming guide.
Smelly Dogs
Dogs that really do smell bad may actually have allergies or dermatitis. Take your pet in for a check-up with your Vet to rule out any underlying problems such as bacterial or fungal skin disease or dental disease. Your Vet will also be able to recommend the best shampoo for your dog’s skin type. develop a smelly odors in between baths, have slightly red or itchy skin may have allergies. Dogs that have fleas often also develop itchy and smelly skin, so ensure your flea control is up to date, even if you don’t see visible fleas on your pet.
You can also use Dermoscent to increase the fatty acid balance in the skin and improve smell. There are also various leave-in conditioners that can be applied in between baths to improve smell, such as Aloveen.
We hope you enjoy the time spent giving your pet a bath. This quality time can become very important to your pet and doing the job yourself can save you a great deal of money over the lifetime of your dog.

🐾🤔 Despite their name, Australian Shepherds have little to do with the Down Under. This dog breed has originated in the Basque region between France and Spain, where many shepherds came from an Australian descent, hence the Australian dog name. Later on, because of their incredible trainability and herding abilities, these dogs were favorited by American farmers and cowboys where the official breed registration began. Even though these shepherd dogs are still working in farms herding cattle, their big brains and warm hearts have won over regular people across the world, too. Bored Panda has compiled a list of examples why Australian Shepherds are the best dog breed to have around. 🐾🍦 #AdmireMyBreed #AdoptDontShop #BarkBox #BarkHappy #BestInBreed #BreedBeauty #BreedLove #BreedOfTheDay #BreedSpotlight #CuteDogs #DogBreedGoals #DogDad #DogDaily #Doggo #DoggyAdmirer #DoggyAdoration #DoggyAdventures #DoggyAdventureTime #DoggyCharm #DoggyCuteness #DoggyDate #DoggyDays #DoggyDelight #DoggyDreams #DoggyEssentials #DoggyFun #DoggyGlam #DoggyHaven #DoggyKisses #DoggyLife #DoggyLove #DoggyMagic #DoggyModel #DoggyParadise #DoggyPhotography #DoggySnuggles #DoggyStyle #DoggyTherapy #DoggyTime #DoggyVibes #DoggyWonder #DoggyWonderland #DoggyWorld #DoggyWorldTour #DogLife #DogLifeIsGood #DogLovers #DogMom #DogObsessed #DogOfTheWeek #DogsAreFamily #DogsAreLove #DogsOfInsta #DogsofInstagram #DogsOfTheDay #DogsOfTheGram #DogsOfTheWorld #DogsofTwitter #FourLeggedFriend #FurBabies #FurBaby #FurBall #FurChild #FurEverFriend #FurFamily #FurryFriend #InstaDog #Pawfect #PawfectDay #Pawfection #PawFriends #PawPrints #PawPrintsOnMyHeart #PawsAndClaws #PawsAndTails #Pawsome #PawsUp #Pawtrait #PetLove #Petstagram #PetTwitter #Puppers #PuppyAdventure #PuppyAdventures #PuppyEyes #PuppyFever #PuppyGang #PuppyGoals #PuppyGram #PuppyHeart #PuppyHugs #PuppyJoy #PuppyKind #PuppyLove #PuppyLoveAffair #PuppyLoveAlways #PuppyLoveClub #PuppyMagic #PuppyMood #PuppyPals #PuppyParty #PuppyPic #PuppyPlay #PuppyPlaytime #PuppyPower #PuppySnuggles #PuppyTales #PurebredPups #RareBreedAlert #TopDogBreeds #TwitterDogs #WoofWoof #Adoptadog #Adoptingseniordogs #Agilitycompetitions #Agilitytrainingfordogs #Bestdogbeds #Bestdogfood #Bestdogtoys #Bestdogfriendlybeaches #Bestdogfriendlycities #Bestdogfriendlyhotels #Bestdogfriendlytrails #Caninefirstaid #Caninehydrotherapy #Caninelanguage #Caninenutrition #Cutedogpictures #DIYdoggrooming #DIYdogHalloweencostumes #DIYdogtoys #DIYdogtraining #DIYdogtreats #Dog #Dogaccessories #Dogagilitytraining #Dogallergies #Doganxiety #Dogbehavior #Dogbirthdayideas #Dogbirthdaypartyideas #Dogbreeds #Dogcarsafety #Dogclothing #Dogdentalcare #Dogdentalchews #Dogdentalhygiene #DogDNAtesting #Dogetiquette #Dogfashiontrends #Dogfirstaid #Dogfitness #Doggrooming #Doggroomingtips #Doghealth #Doghikinggear #Doginsurance #Dogmassagetechniques #Dognames #Dogobediencetraining #Dogparketiquette #Dogphotography #Dogphotographytips #Dogpoolsafety #Dogpregnancy #Dogrescuestories #Dogscenttraining #Dogsubscriptionboxes #Dogsubscriptionservices #Dogsunprotection #Dogsunsafety #Dogsunburnprevention #Dogweightlosstips #Dogweightmanagement #Dogfriendlyairlines #Dogfriendlyapartments #Dogfriendlycafes #Dogfriendlyevents #Dogfriendlygardening #Dogfriendlyhikes #Dogfriendlyoffices #Dogfriendlyrecipes #Dogfriendlyroadtrips #Dogfriendlytechnology #Dogfriendlyvacations #Dogfriendlywineries #Dogproofingyourhome #dogs #Dogsandkids #Emotionalsupportanimals #Famousdogs #Funnydogmemes #Funnydogvideos #Holisticdogcare #Homemadedogfood #Homemadedogtreats #Indoordogactivities #Largedogbreeds #Naturaldogremedies #Outdoordogadventures #Populardognames #Puppycare #Puppysocialization #Puppytraining #Rawdogfood #Seniordogcare #Servicedogtraining #Servicedogs #Smalldogbreeds #Smartestdogbreeds #Therapydogs #Trainingtipsfordogs #Travelingwithdogs 🐕‍👅 258 Reasons Why Australian Shepherds Are The Best Dogs 🐾❤️ 👇 READ MORE 👇

Can My Dog Recognize My Voice?
Tumblr media
If you think your dog knows the sound of your voice you aren’t alone. Back when people had landlines and answering machines some people would call home to talk to their dogs because the audio would play in real-time in the house. Now, many dog cameras have two-way speakers that allow you to not only see your dog but also talk to them. By doing so, you can help redirect a dog who might be barking at a noise outside the window or calm a dog who is stressed or anxious bit.ly/3W6WPau
Many dog owners believe the sound of their voice can be comforting to their dog and will even call home and ask a family member or pet sitter to put the dog on the phone or video call. Although some dogs seem confused by where their owner’s voice is coming from, most dogs do seem to recognize the voice they are hearing belongs to their owner.
What Science SaysScientists have now found that our dogs really do understand our spoken language and can even recognize people’s voices. In a study from the University of Sussex in England, scientists looked at whether dogs were able to recognize a word when it was said by different people who they didn’t know. The study chose random words that were not associated with training cues or commands to ensure dogs didn’t have preexisting understanding. The researchers found that the dogs that were able to recognize a word said by different people, could also recognize different people based on voice alone. Previously, speech perception, or the ability to recognize a word spoken by different people, was thought to be something unique to humans.Another recent study from researchers at the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary discovered that dogs could recognize their owners just by the sound of their voices. The study was looking at the unique acoustic parameters that help people to recognize each other, and if dogs do the same. Researchers looked at 28 different dogs and owners. As part of the study, the dog’s owner and a stranger were hidden behind walls. Then, the dog owner’s voice was played from the owner’s hidden location and the stranger’s voice was played from their location. They found that the dogs were able to find their owners based only on voice most of the time.To see if dogs also relied on their sense of smell to locate their owners, the researchers then played the owner’s voice from where the stranger was hidden. In these cases, the dogs followed the audio of their owner’s voice when it was played from the stranger’s location even though the owner’s scent wasn’t there, proving the importance of voice recognition.

10 Essential Skills for Every Dog
Tumblr media
After signing the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge, owners and their dogs are ready to take the CGC Test. The test is all done on leash. Items on the Canine Good Citizen Test include:
Test 1: Accepting a friendly stran
This test demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach it and speak to the handler in a natural, everyday situation. The evaluator walks up to the dog and handler and greets the handler in a friendly manner, ignoring the dog. The evaluator and handler shake hands and exchange pleasantries. The dog must show no sign of resentment or shyness.
Test 2: Sitting politely for petting
This test demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to touch it while it is out with its handler. With the dog sitting at the handler’s side, to begin the exercise, the evaluator pets the dog on the head and body. The handler may talk to his or her dog throughout the exercise. The dog may stand in place as it is petted. The dog must not show shyness or resentment.
Test 3: Appearance and grooming
This practical test demonstrates that the dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer, or friend of the owner, to do so. It also demonstrates the owner’s care, concern, and sense of responsibility. The evaluator inspects the dog to determine if it is clean and groomed. The dog must appear to be in healthy condition (i.e., proper weight, clean, healthy, and alert). The handler should supply the comb or brush commonly used on the dog. The evaluator then softly combs or brushes the dog, and in a natural manner, lightly examines the ears and gently picks up each front foot. It is not necessary for the dog to hold a specific position during the examination, and the handler may talk to the dog, praise it and give encouragement throughout.
Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
This test demonstrates that the handler is in control of the dog. The dog may be on either side of the handler. The dog’s position should leave no doubt that the dog is attentive to the handler and is responding to the handler’s movements and changes of direction. The dog need not be perfectly aligned with the handler and need not sit when the handler stops. The evaluator may use a pre-plotted course or may direct the handler/dog team by issuing instructions or commands. In either case, there should be a right turn, left turn, and an about turn with at least one stop in between and another at the end. The handler may talk to the dog along the way, praise the dog, or give commands in a normal tone of voice. The handler may sit the dog at the halts if desired.
Test 5: Walking through a crowd
This test demonstrates that the dog can move about politely in pedestrian traffic and is under control in public places. The dog and handler walk around and pass close to several people (at least three). The dog may show some interest in the strangers but should continue to walk with the handler, without evidence of over-exuberance, shyness, or resentment. The handler may talk to the dog and encourage or praise the dog throughout the test. The dog should not jump on people in the crowd or strain on the leash.
