Casually fucking breaking from Merlin stuttering here
Because y’all, no matter how uncoordinated and really clumsy we see of him sometimes, Merlin never wavers in his speech; never doubts what he wants to say and says it no matter the consequences.
But here? Oh God. He can't even fucking begin to process the fact that he ushered Uther to death. He can't help but break over how after everything he did to keep Arthur's heart from breaking, he was made the instrument of tearing Arthur apart.
And he can't help but try to vocalise any of his agony out loud, but stutters trying to say I should have healed him. I should have saved him. I should have been the one to show you the goodness of magic. I should have —
“I wish that there was something more that I could have done.”
I started a Merlin rewatch the other day, and wow, the nostalgia is real! I had a great time being Arthur a few years back, though wearing the chainmail for any length of time definitely takes its toll aha

something i will never move on from is how merlin changed since season one. how he became a shadow of a shadow, the remains of a dream, the silent echo of who he once was.
he killed himself to become Himself, and in the end it was for nothing.
in the end, there was blood and silence.
merlin held arthur's body in his arms and thought that maybe, in that field, in front of that lake, there might had been two corpses.
the way arthur doesn't push as much as he just shoulder bumps merlin, the way merlin starts running before arthur even makes a move, the way arthur only runs about three steps before stopping. intricate rituals etc etc.
