Goddess
... of an empty world
(Revisiting this piece I first drew in 2020 (and which @iffylogic so graciously colored for me back then -- thanks, Iffy! 💕). I wanted to tweak a few details and try my hand at coloring. Also, I may or may not have something up my sleeve for a certain anniversary next month. ;) )

Wanna tell US about the FFVIII Hotel AU?
Gladly! The idea was born with this post, but I'll go ahead and summarize it here, too, so it's all in one place! :D
Basically, it all began with a sign for an old hotel in Arizona, no longer in business. The hotel was called the Central Hotel, but the "L" had fallen off "Central", and my fannish brain just took off from there.
Tumblr media
As for the fic itself:
In a slowly-repopulating Centra with basic infrastructure, Cid and Edea Kramer own the Centra Hotel. It's managed primarily by Edea, while Cid runs around the world inking dubious business deals.
Quistis and Irvine staff the front desk, where Irvine gives out a few too many complementary upgrades to cute female guests and overbooks all the nicest rooms, leaving Quistis to deal with the fallout and quietly plot her revenge.
Zell is a bellhop, a good outlet for his strength and energy, and an excuse for him to cross paths with a certain shy housekeeper.
Selphie is an overeager concierge, booking guests on tours and activities they'd never ask for themselves (parasailing, haunted lighthouse tours, etc.). Enough guests end up enjoying themselves, however, that she comes out looking great, and is sought out by returning guests.
Squall and Seifer, meanwhile, are rival valets. Seifer is fast, but careless with the vehicles, resulting in dents and scuffs and loud arguments with the vehicles' owners over these mishaps. Squall is quiet and efficient, and so collects some healthy tips, which Seifer tries to swipe at every opportunity.
Rinoa arrives at the hotel with her father, dragged along on what he considers a proper vacation, facing the prospect of hours of awkward half-conversations with him. She brightens when she sees a certain valet, however, and as she gets to know the rest of the staff, she begins to relax and have fun.
But the day before she is set to check out, she notices a man in a red sweater vest, pale and worried, hurry into the office behind the front desk, then pick up the phone and slam the door shut.
Cid has just made a very bad business deal, and the hotel's days are numbered. Rinoa offers to help promote the Centra Hotel back in Galbadia, and now, the hotel staff will have to pull together to deliver guest experiences good enough to put the hotel on the map and save it from going under.
----
As much as I love this idea, I never actually got around to writing any of it 😭 (I got sidetracked by the yet-unfinished Tennis AU, which, incidentally, was born in the comments on the original Hotel AU post). I still would really like to write this someday, time and motivation permitting!

For the WIP game, "Though the Hours Take No Notice of What Fate Might Have in Store?" :D
Absolutely! This fic is a very mild canon divergence, wherein the ribbon Celes wears at the opera takes on the significance of Locke's bandana in the original story.
In the original, when the party spends the night in Albrook before leaving for Thamasa, Locke unsuccessfully tries to apologize to Celes for doubting her loyalty to the party and, basically, calling her an imperial spy. In this fic, that awkward exchange is replaced by a conversation between Celes and Terra, where they both come to terms with who they are and how the empire used them. At the end of the conversation, Celes takes the ribbon (which she had been idly admiring), and ties it onto Terra's hair, telling her, "it suits you better than it does me."
Jumping forward to Celes' suicide attempt, the injured bird she finds at the beach has been bandaged with the ribbon she gave Terra, giving Celes hope that her friends might still be alive somewhere.
(I dunno. Locke/Celes leaves me cold, and I wanted to explore the "piece of cloth as a symbol of hope" moment with a pairing that I feel could have a stronger bond.)
Anyway, a snippet, complete with placeholder text!
"Maybe... maybe we're not so different," Terra said.  "Yes, we are.  I'm a general, an experiment, a monster.  I can't even cry.  I was made for killing, nothing more."  "Celes..."  "But you... you're the innocent one in all of this.  You didn't ask for your powers."  "Did you?"  "No, but I let the Empire use me anyway."  "Let them?  Did you even have a choice?"  [At this point, Celes actually does break down, sobbing quietly.]  "It doesn't change what I became.  If you could have seen the look on Locke's face in the Magitek Factory.  That he could believe for even a second that I would betray all of you!  That... that spoke louder than anything he could've said.  No matter who I am, no matter how I act, I can’t escape my past."  “Can anybody?  You said I was innocent, but I’m not.  I didn’t want the Empire to use me, either, but they did anyway.  And I hurt people.  Even if I couldn’t think for myself, I still hurt people.  And there’s no way to take back what I’ve done, but… maybe, if I can help end this war, I can help a lot of people, too.  More people than I’ve hurt.  More people than you’ve hurt.”  Terra paused.  “It’s strange.  My emotions came back, but I still have trouble naming them.  When I think about helping others, though, when I think about a better world, I feel good.  I think it’s hope?”

For the WIP game, can you tell us about Georgiana and the cats or Wouldn’t Have Minded?
Of course! Why not both? :D
Georgiana and the cats - Unfortunately, this "title" is a bit misleading, as the cats do not feature quite as prominently as one would expect (though Banjo does eventually find a new permanent home with Georgiana, having transformed into the sweetest little angel around her XD). But the majority of the story centers around Georgiana's curiosity about Valancy and Barney's travels and her memories of the dreams she had for herself when she was young.
After greeting Valancy and Barney on their return and sorting out the cat situation, Georgiana gathers her courage and asks if she may see the Blue Castle. Valancy and Barney agree, and welcome her.
Georgiana finds everything new and exciting—if maybe a bit terrifying, as well.  The car ride down the bumpy road to the shore, the boat ride to the island.  And then, there on the veranda of the Blue Castle, she takes her first breath of freedom.  She stays for dinner and talks with both Valancy and Barney; she learns of the island, of their life there.  She hears tales from their travels this past year.  And she finds one more shred of courage to admit her girlhood dreams to Valancy, with the admonition to not push them aside.
When she returns home, she sits down at her desk, pen in hand and Banjo purring contentedly at her feet, and writes down the memories and dreams of her youth.  They will never be published, of course, but simply getting them out of her mind and onto paper feels good, feels liberating, feels like the second-best thing to living them. And if Valancy should have children, Georgiana wishes to pass these memories on to them as well, so that they may think fondly on the old woman who never had the courage to fulfill her dreams, but did have the fortune, through her brave niece, to breathe in freedom, at least once.
As for a snippet, I haven't written much of this besides notes, but I will share the bit I shared with the Blue Castle Book Club's Snippet Sunday a while back:
She recognized them—all too well—immediately.  The only thing about them that had remained the same from their day of departure was the blessedly quiet green car.  Otherwise, they had left Deerwood as the Redferns of Montreal and returned—quite shamelessly, Georgiana thought—as the Snaiths of Mistawis.  Barney, clad in a simple homespun shirt, had allowed his hair to grow again, and it hung over his forehead to the tops of his mismatched eyebrows; Valancy, meanwhile, had kept her hair cut short and was dressed in—good heavens, was Valancy wearing knickers?
Wouldn't Have Minded - This fic is my answer to "what if Barney had heard Valancy's conversation with Olive the night they got stranded on the road without gas?" And, of course, he does tease her about it, but on his quiet walk back home (having left Lady Jane at Roaring Abel's for the night), he realizes that while he has no romantic interest in Valancy (none that he'd admit, anyway), after what he's seen of her character, he truly likes her.
A short snippet:
“Wouldn’t have minded if I had, eh?” Valancy frowned.  “If you had what?” Barney said nothing, only grinned and watched from the corner of his eye as her confusion gave way to realization, then abject horror. “You heard that?” she cried, burying her face in her hands. “Didn’t mean to.”  Indeed, he had something of a talent for unintentional eavesdropping, it seemed.  At least this time, the result was more amusing.

Can I ask about "Far From the Water"?
Certainly! This WIP is a few years old already, and features a theme/headcanon I love to visit when writing Blue | Boxer | Auden -- that of class stratification in Cloudbank and Auden's insecurities about his own social standing. What sets this fic apart from others I've written on the subject is that it also features a much moodier Auden than I usually write.
It takes place fairly early in his relationship with Red, when he's coming to terms with the actual possibility of being with someone he'd normally consider out of his league, and how that necessitates a reassessment of his own biases regarding citizens of other social strata. The title comes from his in-game quote, "I never thought much of Highrise. Far from the water. Then I found out... you lived here."
When the sense of pride he's been using to compensate for his insecurity runs headlong into the possibility of joining a crowd he has long disdained, his sense of self and the future of his relationship with Red both become less than certain.
A snippet:
There was a point where drinking took him past relaxation and dropped him into a state of morose introspection.  It was as if, somewhere in his mind, someone threw a switch, shifting the tracks beneath his train of thought, sending it straight into tunnel. He usually knew to stop before he reached that point. Last night, though, the crowd at Cattie's was too entertaining, the stories too engrossing and the music too good, for him to notice the subtle change in his thoughts, until he found himself frowning at jokes and bristling at the raucous laughter around him.  He finished his last drink, slid his money across the bar, and took his leave, good-naturedly waving off invitations to stay and accusations of being a lightweight. The cool evening breeze cleared his head somewhat, but the switch had been thrown, and the fears that lurked in the corners of his mind began to creep front and center.

And no I don’t think love ever leaves because it’s been eight years since my dad died and he is in every thought and hope and dream. and when I think I can’t fix the computer he is here. and when I eat chocolate cake he is here. and when the sun glows at 3pm he is here. and he will always be here because his life made mine, and my life will be his epilogue

WIP Game
Thank you, @aleheartilly , for the tag! 🥰
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
I am a shameless collector of unfinished stories and seeds of ideas that have barely sprouted. I also have no dedicated WIP folder. 😔 So I have done my best to scrounge about my directories and find all my little lost fic-lambs, bringing them here (to market or to slaughter?) for your perusal.
