The tudors costumes; Tv vs reality pt.3
Catharine Howard's red dress
TV:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, what is wrong with this one? To be honest... not much. No really, those of you who know something about the Tudor fashion might scratch your heads but let me explain, please.
This dress is actually period-accurate 1540s wear from Florence, Italy. Now, the "puffed" sleeves were going out of style in most of Italy but kept their popularity in Florence until the end of the 1540s. It was not uncommon for an English court to wear foreign clothes during parties or masquerades, it was seen as a sign of wealth and status.
There few things wrong however:
●the flowers are obviously fake and I don't think you can make a headband from flowers like this without glue
●the hair should be up
● the golden flowers should have been embroidered not glued on
● the end of the top should not be so "pointy"
● I don't like the fabric don't know why tho
Wow one historicaly acurate dress and it's Italian one... like wow guy.
Reality:
As said before, this style of ruffed sleeves was popular in 1540s Florence. Of the six queens, Catherine had the biggest wardrobe and biggest jewelry box. Henry loved spoiling her with dresses, jewelry, and animals.
We don't know how Catherine looked if she ever had a portrait then it was destroyed after her death just like Anne Boleyn's were. She was known to be attractive, maybe not gorgeous but pretty enough to catch an eye. Probably had dark auburn hair, and dark eyes. Personality-wise was she was kind-hearted, loved animals, and was described as a bit naive. She loved dancing, masquerades, and socializing. Many described her as very similar to Anne Boleyn.

The Tudors Costumes; Tv vs reality part-2
Tumblr media
Wow... where to start? Now, I don't want to be mean (or meaner than usually) 'cause I know there are people who like the costumes from the show (for example: people from the Tudors Tv Tropes page) so I'll try to make it quick.
The tiara is at least one century early. In real life Jane would wear goble hood
The necklace is passible, the earings are not
The Medici collar is there few decades early same with the puff sleeves
The golden applique... the more I look at it the more I want to commit hate crimes againgst costume designers
Skirt is missing volume, this is what happend s when you forget farthingale
The entire fabric is bad ignoring the fact that it is cheap and rumpled, it's too shiny and pastel-y. Which real-life Jane would not wear since it's very French-like and we all know how ended the last queen wore French fashion
The reality
Tumblr media
Jane's preferred colors were dark blue, dark orange, crimson, purple and white. The last two were so expensive only the highest nobility could afford them or in the case of purple wear, since it was only for the royal family. She would probably wear embroidered silk or velvet. Jane had a much bigger wardrobe than Catalina de Aragon, which shows that she may have been conservative but not humble. French fashion was forbidden from the court (or at least for her ladies-in-waiting) the reasons being that she found it scandalous and also Henry really liked it if you know what I mean 😏
That's for today, I'm tired already. In the next part expect our girl K Howard.

The Tudors costumes; Tv show vs Reality
Excuse my drawing skills, I sketched this on my phone whose screen is 70% damaged by oil and without any stylus just with my finger
Many people think that the romance between Anne Boleyn and Henry the VIII sparkled during the Château Vert pageant in which Anne played the role of Lady Perseverance. This scene was depicted in multiple Tudor media and even inspired original works, but historicaly speaking there is a slim chance that the two even spole together during the pageant.
The Tudors Costume:
Tumblr media
What we see: Peineta- a Spanish Comb from 19th century (yes, similiar one existed before but this one is quite modern)
Floating ruffle- late 16th century (at least something from the same century)
18th century inspired top/corset showing niples (verry classy and smegsy)
A skirt which looks like 1950s petticoat
Yeah, As you may have noticed not period accurate but I have a fun story about it! I watched the episode when I was seven (Yes, I was a neglected child, moving on) and I really really wanted to be like Anne so I drew a heart under my eye... with a permanent marker. My parents were delighted, to say the least.
Reality
Sorry the drawing is Cursed but it serves its purpose
I'll disappoint a lot of you but... No nipples I bet you did not expect that, ha. In real life, the eight ladies wore gowns in the Italian style, from Milan, Lombardy to be exact. Made from white satin, with the name of their virtue embroidered (with gold) on their gowns and Milan bonnets (actually called balzo) with cauls (the handkerchief-like thing under the balzo) on their heads. Can you imagine how expensive that must have been, especially for Boleyns who had to pay for two daughters (Marry was there too, she played Lady Kindness)
The most challenging for me (not counting the FUCKING FINGERS) was where to put the embroidered name of the lady. It was mentioned that it was on a dress but not specifically mentioned on which part so put it on an overskirt since on a top it looked like a sorority shirt.

Warnings: English is my third language, also I'm not a historian, so there may be some missing or incomplete facts. All I can promise is that I tried my best.
As a big Anne Boleyn simp (yes, I'm a basic  bitch judge me however you want) I read a lot of books and articles about her and one thing that always comes up is the fact that Anne brought french fashion to the English court.
This led me to ask myself "what the fuck was French fashion?"
"Oh Danni, you silly little hoe. They mean French hood!" Some of you might answer and you wouldn't be wrong or at least not completely wrong 'cause yes I'm a silly little hoe and French hoods were obviously part of the fashion but they weren't the only trend at the time. So I started searching for answers. Google search brought bigger nothing than my existence to humanity so I had to go a little deeper and make my own conclusions.
English fashion:
•darker colors- Black and red combination was especially popular
• heavy embroidery
• Furs (it was a cold period thanks to the Little Ice Age)
• Popular fabrics: Cotton, wool, linen, velvet, silk
• Gable hood
Tumblr media
French fashion:
• Lighter almost pastel colors, black was   mostly combined with white
• neckline or should I say shoulder line is a bit lower
• Not so heavy embroidery or no at all
• Popular fabrics: Silk, Satin, velvet
• Influenced by Italian and German Fashion
• French hood
Tumblr media
There's a misconception that it was Anne Boleyn who brought French hoods to England. That's not true (that's why I called misconception, duh) it was Henry's sister Mary who brought it to England, Anne just popularised it. From the begging, French fashion was a controversial subject in an English court, many saw it as indecent. The French hood caused the most heated discussions because of the "Immoral" amount of hair it was showing.
One of my favorite movies Anne of the Thousand Days utilized these facts perfectly in its costuming. Catalina de Aragon is shown wearing the old style, she's an established figure in her court there's no need for her to experiment or find a new style (even though she wears a French hood in the movie, in real life Catalina wore it only a few times). Anne o the other hand is young, she is like a breath of fresh air, and she wears what she wants not carrying about what others may think of her.
Tumblr media
This changes during her trial when she switches to the English style to appear more seriously.
Tumblr media
So that's it for now I guess

Writing tip or possible challenge: if you hate filling character sheets then try writing notes about your oc/plots like a tv tropes page. It's much easier than writing long paragraphs plus it will make you think twice about your stories and characters.

My friend: why would you buy yourself an Esquire magazine? That's not something you typically read
Me: Uhm, no particular reason...
The magazine this month:
(P.s sorry for the photo quality, I don't have a scanner so I had to take photos with my phone)
(Second P.s Mads's answers during the interview were really cute and humble, he called fans who ask him for a photo/autograph "small heroes")

I still cant get over the fact that in books Jaskier/Dandelion went to the mass grave, risked his own health and retrieved dead body on his own just to give Essi proper burial.
This is the reason why Jaskier/Dandelion is my favorite character in the whole franchise, he is a loyal friend till death does him and his friends apart, and even after that he stays their friend.

Remarried Empress- (posible) Costume inspirations
Prepare yourself for a brief history lesson and Empress Sissi references
(P.s I'm not a native English speaker, take it into account while you read)
1. THE Green Dress
Tumblr media
This green beauty is from the 1950s series Sissi with Romy Schneider playing the titular character, Empress Sissi. Despite the movie being set in the middle of the 19th century, the gown itself is very 1950s
2. Gold and red dress- webtoon
Tumblr media
We have two versions of the gown one from the novel illustration and the other from the webtoon, both inspired by the 1850s-1860 royal court dress worn during important events. I saw a portrait of almost the same dress Navier wears in a webcomic but I couldn't find it so I used similar pictures as references.
3. Gold and red- Novela
Tumblr media
This version is more inspired by costumes from the movie Ludwig (1973) in which Romy Schneider repeats her role as Sissi.
4. Red and white combo
Tumblr media
This look dress could be inspired by Russian court wear from the late 1830s to early 1840s.
5. Simple regency dress
Tumblr media
In this one, Navier wears a simple but very elegant dress in her favorite color, I'm quite sure that Hamilton fans will be familiar with this style. I would set this gown from the 1800s to 1815.
6. Masquerade gown from Novela illustration
Tumblr media
Okay, this one is a stretch but I couldn't help myself and see the similarities between the two. The possible inspiration is from the 2009 miniseries called Sissi. Again despite being set in the 1850s the red gown Sissi wears is closer to something Charles James would design in the 1950s.
