11 - Has been a transformative number for me over the past 2 years through ups and downs. The number 11 often shows up to show and teach me things - many things I was extremely resistant to because I was being taught to learn through struggle, to find understanding in disagreement and that all things are happening for me and my guidance not necessarily to or against me. FUN FACT: I like to read about and watch sci-fi books/movies & one thing that makes a great movie or book is the narrative surrounding the main characters development - often punctuated by sacrifice, hardship, self reflection ect. Though we the audiences have seen the signs the main character often misses being all consumed in the plot and we have a sense that they’ll be ok, be successful or survive, they can’t yet see the help on the way. Great example : check out the new movie on @netflix - “IO” At any rate... God has a great sense of humour if you didn’t know - get into it 😅 I found this today: Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Last summer was so cool, I experienced and was apart of so many amazing opportunities - THIS ONE ... this one was one for the books! I have always thought how cool it would be to have your face up on billboards in your home city ( as a matter of fact it was on my vision board in the THINK BIG section) but I could have never imagined that opportunity presenting itself to me in the way that it did. I started my IG/Tumblr (Blog) many, many years ago hoping to share my hair journey, interact with curly girls like myself and when I shaved my head it was a sort of personal rebellion against what was the expectation of curly girls at the time. I’ve spoken openly about my concern for the curly typing narrative and while its initial purpose was to serve as a marker for finding products turned into a “growth/length” battle dividing us into categories. I say that to say this when I shaved my head it was my intention to shake the table in my own life (some people were shocked, others disappointed), but it was the most FREEING choice I’ve made and I truly feel that stepping out of my comfort zone was what began the roll out of opportunities I’m so humbled to have been offered. LAST SUMMER I did a shoot w/ @virginmobilecan not knowing where these promotions would end up but excited and grateful to have the opportunity anyways... to find myself months later on billboards, bus stops, in streetcars, on the sides of buildings and all over social media ads. I had family and friends all over the city sending me images like the one you see above. It’s been a while since I’ve posted a selfie ... so here is my SELF 🤳🏾 lol - for those who ask about my colours I use custom mixes of several different colours every time I do my hair, so there are subtle differences in the blues/teals/greens in person ... My last journal entry for 2016: He said "you're like a butterfly"🦋... I laughed, as ironically enough I had always likened myself to a butterfly but I've always felt cocooned like if I could just reach all the markers I had set out in life to accomplish, that I'd finally have my freedom. 25 is around the corner for me & the truth is this year I learned quite possibly the most important lessons thus far in my journey - it's not the wings that make the butterfly beautiful it's the resilience to giving up hope, even in darkness, even in solitude and even in stillness. I've resented my cocoon for so long but now I understand, the contrasts of life are necessary. We must take the good with the bad, there are no hills without valleys and no darkness without light.
