If Sawamura Daichi was perfectly honest, he barely glanced at any of the paintings that he had passed by in the past hour. His full attention was on his girlfriend, who wandered around the museum, admiring all the artwork that surrounded them. But Daichi had decided before they even stepped into the museum that she was the only piece of art that was worth looking at.
He had surprised her with a date to the museum, taking her to see an impressionist exhibit that she had been excited for, with tickets he bought about two months ago after the first time she mentioned it. When asked what she should wear for the surprise date, he just told her to wear something cute and comfortable and walkable shoes and he would pick her up. When she opened the door, he practically fell in love with her all over again. She picked out a knee length yellow sundress with flowers scattered all over, a white sweater, and her hair pinned back. And her smile that graced her face when she figured out where they were going by the bus stops just made her outfit even that much brighter, and he could’ve sworn that she looked just like a sunflower.
She currently stood in front of a painting, looking at the woman who was depicted. She seemed to be studying her face, trying to memorize every stroke in the woman’s hair, trying to read her expression. Daichi was doing the same, but with her instead of the painting. He watched as she tilted her head and scrunched her nose a little, before moving to read the placard next to the painting, absorbing all the information it gave about the woman on the wall. The flower single flower he had picked for her today was in her hair, and he noticed how sweet and innocent it looked. She asked him something, probably if he liked the painting and he just nodded his head, sending her a smile. Satisfied with his answer, she floated on to the next one.
When she stopped at the next work of art, the two resumed their usual position, Daichi’s girlfriend looking at the painting, and Daichi looking at her. He was still studying her reaction to the painting when she glanced at him. He felt his cheeks turn red and quickly turned to face the painting, this time of a colorful landscape with a bridge.
“What do you think of this one Dai?” she asked with a teasing tone that let him know she knew he hadn’t been looking at the painting. He still tried to play it off.
“I like it, the colors look cool, and um I like the boats.”
“Mmhmm the colors are nice,” she responded and walked to the next painting. The two continued their routine, but she spoke up again, glancing at her boyfriend.
“You know it’s really hard to look at and appreciate art with you constantly staring at me you weirdo. Have you really looked at anything since we got here?”
“Mmm at some but you’re much more beautiful than this…” he glanced at the painting they stood in front of, “...squiggly tree.”
“You’re such a dork.”
“Yeah, but I’m your dork.” He shoots her a wink and she scrunches her nose at him, but she reaches to take his hand.
“Oh, sorry I can’t do that.” Daichi says, smiling when she frowns at him.
“Why not?”
“I can’t touch the artwork, sorry sweetheart.” Daichi points to a sign on the wall that tells the guests to not touch the art, and she just rolls her eyes, trying to fight off the smile from her face and walks away.
“You’re so dumb.”
“You thought it was funny.”
“No I didn’t.”
“Mmhmm.”
“Just hold my hand you freak.” Daichi laughed and took his girlfriend’s hand, pulling it up for a kiss.
They walk to the next gallery, still holding hands, and Daichi smiles as this time she stays close instead of walking off, leaving him to follow. He didn’t mind when she did that though, he would happily follow her wherever she wanted to go but having her stay by his side felt so nice.
“Are you having a good time?” She looked at him with a small smile, but her eyes shined so brightly and she didn’t need to say anything for him to know the answer.
