The following post is about Hawkeye and the way that people write his lip reading in fanfictions that I've read recently
Listen,,, the last thing I wanna do here is be mean, I know for sure that no harm was intended in any of this, I just wanna share my point of view on something real quick, kay? Love that you're acknowledging his deafness, love it. I just thought I'd share some things from my perspective that you may not have thought about. No worries tho if youve done this! No hard feelings! So, I am not fully deaf, I can't justify the cost of a hearing aid just yet. But part of that is because I'm really good at lip reading, I've had to be. Between that and sitting in the front row of class, I do all right. But about 75% of what I can get is from lip reading.
Now, a huge part of lip reading is using context clues as well, which is mainly what I wanted to talk about here. Something I see a lot that irks me a little every time is a sentence like this;
"What were you [ewe?] thinking?"
I see this ALL. THE. TIME. WHY.Assuming that I got all those other words, which the phrasing implies, why on EARTH would I think you're trying to talk to me about a female sheep right now? Yes, those are homonyms. Yes, they do look the same when you're mouthing them. But keep the context in mind. We were not and have not ever talked about sheep. There's no reason for that to cross my mind when I'm reading your lips. I see the word 'you' all the time and I know where it appears in common sentences. Unless we are actively around sheep the word 'ewe' isn't going to cross my mind!
For me, at least, it would go something closer to this;
"Water you thinking?" [Oh, what were]
People run their words together, accents make it tough, if they're chewing gum while talking it's nearly impossible. Letters that are made in the back of your mouth are the ones I miss, I can't see that, so like g and h. S and t are hard to tell apart, and n and l sometimes. Things like that. If it's a word I've never heard before I'll ask for them to spell it, it's generally faster than repeating it a few times and me still not getting it. And I almost never figure out the words in the middle of the sentence they're saying, I'm still focusing on getting the next few words so I can use context to help figure it out, so there's generally a delayed reaction where I put it all together after you speak, so the corrections would be at the end. And, sometimes, I get something absolutely off-the-wall bonkers not even close no idea how I got that from what you're saying. Put something like that in your fic, if you'd like. Often I'll just nod my head and agree and then realize hours later what it was meant to be.
Anywho. That's my personal experience anyway. Do with this information what you will.

“Hey, so, uh. I’m deaf. They deafened me. I’m deaf and we need to talk so… So I’m gonna sign what I have to say. I need the practice and I’m not gonna hide anymore. Barney’ll translate. It’ll be okay. Okay? Okay.”

Writing Deaf Character Tips
I’ve seen a lot of fanfic writers ask for tips to write Deaf characters so I thought I would write some out to help make authentic.  Also feel free to send ask for any questions!
Deaf characters exist on a spectrum- it’s rare to have no residual hearing.
Deaf characters can’t magically hear perfect with assistive devices. Hearing aids are in the name- an aid.  They make it easier to pick up some sounds.  They are also expensive and a lot of insurance won’t cover.
ASL- American Sign Language.  Deaf characters raised by hearing family might not have access to ASL until later in life.  Percentage of Deaf kids educated in fluent ASL is low.
ASL has own grammar and syntax totally different from English,  But! It is okay to write ASL in spoken English grammar, especially if you don’t know ASL.  We know what you mean!
Avoid Deaf and hearing characters signing and speaking long sentences at the same time. It’s called Sim-Com and ASL users who can do it are rare because sentence structures are totally different.  It would be like trying to write a sentence in English at the exact same time (word for word) as someone speaks it in French.   Sim-com usually used with SEE and still hard for fluent ASL Deaf to follow.
Deaf characters can be dizzy!  Many many Deaf have tinnitus and vertigo.  Comes with many hearing loss conditions.  Vertigo can also be triggered by flashing lights, heavy bass sounds.  (very annoying in the car when driving and someone has loud, shake your car bass)
Deaf characters can also can have balance problems from inner ear issues.
Deaf characters can enjoy music!  Many ways to enjoy music besides hearing all of it.
Lip reading is hard.  You need to start at the beginning of the conversation, need constant context, and when you lose the thread it’s hard to get back.  Many many words look the same on lips that sound totally different.  Avoid magic lipreading in characters.
Character doesn’t need to have a Deaf accent.
Deaf character doesn’t need to talk loud.  Many Deaf talk very soft because they feel vibrations before the vibrations make audible noise.
Deaf characters can be very fluent in written English and great writers but still have very poor sentence skills when being casual in texting or conversation (like me!)  Hard to go from ASL to English brain, and makes you tired.
Deaf characters can use ASL Slang!  ASL has colloquial signs that have no direct English translation but we use all the time (peh peh, train go sorry, champ, etc etc)   Here are some examples!
That’s all I have for now.  Hope it helped!

While I'm beyond happy they're finally making Hawkeye deaf and sign - something I've been desperately waiting years for!! - I'm a bit annoyed with one part of it.
While they're signing, the don't fully frame their hands. Like. Rule number 1, any Sign teachers can attest to for their homework videos. Make sure your hands are always clearly visible.
Clint's hands are partially or fully obscurred by other people. Maya's hands aren't even in most of her shots. The same with her dad's signs and Kazi's signs. Or the shot cuts away mid-signed sentence. Come on! I want to SEE the signs!

Not excited about Hawkeye’s “hearing aid”
If that’s even what it is.
I feel like MCU Hawkeye and Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye are two very different guys. The fact that they seem to be trying to merge them doesn’t excite me.
As far as representation - Comic Hawkeye (in the Matt Fraction run, where the MCU seems to be drawing heavy inspiration from) has a history of hearing problems. He was deaf for a little while as a child. He speaks ASL. There was an entire issue done in almost all ASL and it was phenomenal. Sorry, but giving Jeremy Renner, someone who I don’t think has any experience with ASL or deafness, a hearing aid in one ear (if that’s what it is in the trailer) is not my idea of great representation.
You know what’s better?  Alaqua Cox is going to be appearing in Hawkeye as Maya Lopez. Maya Lopez (or Echo) is a deaf Native American superhero in the comics and Alaqua Cox is a deaf Native American actress.
(Not to mention deaf actress Lauren Ridloff playing  Makkari in the Eternals.)
THAT is representation. Not some hearing dude wearing a prop.

When i'm feeling down, Clint Barton comes to me speaking words of wisdom.
"You're gonna miss each and every shot you can't be bothered to take. That's not living life- that's just being a tourist. Take every shot, Kate. If it's worth caring about, no matter how impossible you think it is - you take that shot."
~ Hawkeye, Vol 1 - My Life as a Weapon
And then there is this -
"Today sucks. I'm goin' back to bed."
~ Hawkeye #9
Which, fair.

Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales talks to Hailey Cooper in Sign Language

Honestly this was really thoughtful to see in a game, I don't know why I don't see anyone really talking about this on tumblr, maybe I don't follow the right people to see it but it's still such a wholesome interaction and to see different representation in games
