Conducting Low-Flow Sampling A low-flow sampling procedure starts with purging the water located in the underground aquifer. You’ll have to do it at a rate mimicking the ambient water flow, which is around 0.1 to 0,5L/mm. You’ll also need to choose between manual and automatic pumping. The former method gives you greater control, while the latter is faster. Both methods require close monitoring. After pumping, you’ll need to perform stabilization tests on the water before taking a sample. The key parameters to check include D.O, pH, temperature, and conductivity. The best way to ensure that stabilization is reached is to take readings every three to five minutes. Once you get three readings returning the same results, you can collect the sample. What Are PFAS? #PFAS are also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are man-made chemicals that include PFOS, PFOA, GenX, and several other #chemicals. They’re used to make products that resist water, heat, stains, oil, and grease. This can include anything from clothing and furniture to non-stick cooking surfaces. The production of PFOS and PFOA in the U.S. has been in decline for a few decades. As they’re getting phased out, though, new PFAS are coming in to take their place. Reason for Concern The main reason why PFAS are dangerous is that they don’t break down in the #environment. This allows them to move through #drinking #water that’s localized within a specific facility, such as a landfill or a wastewater treatment plant. PFAS can also accumulate and persist in living organisms, such as fish, animals, and humans. Studies show that prolonged exposure to PFAS can cause adverse #health effects in humans.
