 For those who keep saying “Where is the old Eren”, “I miss the old Eren” 

  First of all, if you think Young Eren isn’t the same Eren that we have now, then you misunderstood the entirety of him, and of course Isayama Sensei.  There’s no “Old Eren” because Eren has always been himself from the beginning until now. The manga is pretty much clear about that.   So first, if you’re looking for “Innocent Eren” then probably for me, that was the “Eren” before he knew there’s more outside the walls before Armin told him about the things beyond walls.   

That Eren who was sitting peacefully, contemplating under the blue sky? Yes, we can say that’s an “innocent Eren”, it’s where he told himself he felt content before Armin told him things before he knew there’s so much more outside the walls.   Yet, let’s say Armin won’t tell him that, eventually, titans will destroy the walls sooner to create chaos, and Eren will eventually go to being “himself”, the Eren we know who will take vengeance, and fight for freedom. The mysteries outside and inside the walls in due course will be known, even Armin won’t say anything about the things outside the walls to make Eren seek outside. So it’s clear that the “innocent and content Eren” was just a short phase, and that won’t build up for who he truly is. We all had those innocent moments when we were really young. 

 The  “Old Eren” some say who is brave, who fights the wall guards, etc, basically the child Eren before and after the titan invasion of titans in Wall Maria with Mikasa and Armin, if you really understood what his personality, you would definitely think he’ll have the potential to be unstoppable in the future. The way he fought strangers against the survey corps, the way he saved Mikasa in his first human kill, the way he was so determined to fight the titans, the way he sought freedom at his young age have stayed true until now. It just happened that he knew the answers now, and shifted these determinations towards the right suspects. 

His anger towards titans just shifted to humanity outside the walls. He was disappointed tho, knowing the real enemy is “humanity”, but being “Eren”, of course, he won’t just stop there, because the “Eren” we’ve seen ever since is the Eren who would do anything to fight for “his freedom”, to fight for his people etc. (Really stubborn one)  Just like what he told Zeke, and what Mikasa now understood, he has always been himself, Eren has freely been himself, choosing for what he really stands for. Of course, there were times comrades, foreshadowing, and truths may change him a bit, manipulate or push him back, but eventually, he always stood up to what he truly is. That’s why he keeps getting called a “suicidal maniac”, making Levi also leaving him with no right and wrong answers in times of dilemmas. 

  The “Hobo Eren” is still the “Young Eren” and the “Survey Corps Eren” we knew. “Hobo Eren” just had seen enough, of course, personality alters when you’re on the brink of destruction, despair, and whatnots, he’s human after all, but his motivation and determination to fulfill his fight for freedom have always been the same. Comparing him to all of his comrades, he’s the one who truly stayed true to what he truly is.  The tragedies didn’t shape him thoroughly, but events made it clear for what he is and what he could do. Grisha just did have completely opposite sons. Eren was born being free to what he wants to be unlike Zeke, and so Eren has remained true to himself until the end.  

 If Eren suddenly changed the course of his will, like stopped the rumbling and just decided to change plans for whatever reason, then that’s the new Eren we’re talking about. That could be possible as well, but what else can change him after foreseeing too much? Mikasa? Love? Armin? If his closest friends couldn’t even catch up with him ever since he was young, then changing him won’t be easy. 

  Isayama kept showing even before that Young Eren always goes ahead, always leaves his friends, always wants to be somewhere, then those were basically foreshadowing the end, “The Rumbling”, his wills even if it would go against his friends. It’s always been like that, things are just getting clearer, and clearer now for everyone. Eren is Eren, he’s destined to leave us and to fight for his freedom.

i dont wanna hate eren but, i’m truly disappointed with him. he became the very same thing he hated: a massmurderer. he killed innocents woman and children. if people wanna compare his action to RBA, I’m sorry in this case eren wasn’t brain washed,he had choices. what’s the point of repeating the same history, creating new eren 2.0 (gabi)?i miss my old eren. the old him would feel hesitation or resist to do such thing. yes he wanted to wipe out his enemy,but is it including eldians,HIS OWN KIND?

I mean, I absolutely love current Eren. I don’t really get it when people love or hate characters depending on the morality of their actions; for me it’s just about how well-written they are. And boy, is this boy positively shining with phenomenal writing! 

Exactly, he became the very thing he hated: it’s a classic case of “He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster”, an idea introduced when titanshifting was, and all part of the series’ greater aim of breaking down black and white morality. He’s been killing Eldians this entire time after all - in the form of Titans.

Eren is horribly depressed and horribly desperate. Everything he once believed so fiercely has been dashed against the wall - Titans are humans, he’s not special, the battle still isn’t over, and on top of that, different personalities are fighting for control inside his head and he will inevitably die in a few years. But he is compelled forward by a terrible sense of duty - he must finish what he started, by any means necessary. No longer able to tell what’s right or wrong anymore, so thoroughly has his black-and-white perception of things been shattered, he is allowing himself to drift into ever murkier territory. It does indeed perpetuate the cycle of violence, but Eren has always believed that destroying the enemy will make them free - and he does not see any alternatives. This is the natural progression of that line of thought - and to be fair, a peaceful solution is very difficult to see to this problem. 

Remember, the Survey Corps led hundreds to useless deaths before, and enabled the massacre of civilians in the Stohess gambit to capture the Female Titan. This kind of slaughter isn’t so different from what we’ve seen before. And one might excuse RAB for breaking down Wall Maria when they believed the Paradisians to be demons (save for Annie), but that excuse does not apply when they broke down Wall Rose after getting to know the Paradisians so intimately. Just like the warriors, Eren’s choice was an act - a very understandable act - of selfish desperation.

Here’s my full analysis of Eren’s mental state. I love how this series doesn’t point to any easy answers - I like old Eren too, but he was just as flawed as he is today, he and we just didn’t know it. It’s never a simple case of “Don’t be so narrow-minded!” or “Fight for what’s right!”. It’s a veritable tragic quagmire. And Eren knows that better than anyone.

What an incredible character.
