A review from a buyer!

Hi Bex, We're Really enjoying our new "wall treasure"! We had family here this weekend and they thought your painting looked like a photograph! (Gene thought I had cut a hole in the living room wall and he was looking outdoors! Seriously.) We love your artwork

In my fantasy novel, there are four teenage mages who hang out a lot. I drew each of their houses in a different season:

"Winter at the Orchard"

Winter at the Orchard (part of my Methyean Seasons series): Rows of dormant apple trees sit steadfast against the falling snowflakes, while one of the family's mounts--a unicorn--dozes under the branches. I originally wanted to do a line of trees during the winter, but it wouldn’t show the house. Plus orchards are prettier in the spring, but I had already used spring. In the end I settled on the unicorn dozing amongst the trees on the road leading to the character’s house

"Summer at the Estate"

Summer at the Estate (part of my Methyean Seasons series): A peaceful path leading up to a home build in the trees. Outside the family's horses graze on the summer grass. Since she is the archsage's daughter, they have a very fantasy style house--a tree makes up the front door. Their house is connected to a cave system behind, and has a connection to their barn, where their animals live. I included my own pony in the front yard.

"Spring on the Farm"

"Spring at the Farm" (part of my Methyean Seasons series): The colorful trees are in bloom against the backdrop of the blue mountains . The family's livestock enjoy the warm air while their young hatch. I based the town they live in on mine so I needed blue mountains (for the Blue Ridge Mountains). This character lives on a farm in a style that I would feel home in one day, and he raises an alien bird-alpaca hybrid.

"Autumn at the Grist Mill"

"Autumn at the Grist Mill" (part of my Methyean Seasons series): Withing the changing leaves sits a family home with a waterwheel. The pond by the house has the best fishing. I adore the cozy cabin with the waterwheel and would love the sound of the water lulling me to sleep. Over the bridge the family owns a grist mill where they make cider. The mages love to walk downstream and fish in the pond that forms.

Misty's design was fun as it was a male human form since her OCs are usually male. Added to the fact that with Aphantasia, her powers work differently! Other easter eggs are: 

DRAGON EGGS (pun intended) referencing that Misty makes dragon eggs for our Pern roleplay site

wolpertinger--wolf and rabbit! She had a wolfsona, and of course owns and rescues rabbits.

Finally got it to move!

When you try to tell your characters you made them.... so ungrateful.

I was originally inspired to write this part for the comic by Inkheart. (that book/movie has such Author Being vibes!!!) As creators we expect our characters to be as excited as we are that we made them, but it doesn't work out that way. Imagine someone disrupting your WHOLE belief system, and they expect you to take them at their word? Ridiculous!

A little spoiler for Variant Realms. Bex finally tells Shreeko about his nature and her role, and his reaction is understandable. I love this kind of reaction for characters. Bex hate being labeled a god though.

Inkheart inspired this part, since it really fits Author Beings and their characters.

“But we never expected them to be real. When we found out, we leapt at the chance to see our places in person. Who wouldn’t? I mean, to see everything you’ve been striving to create in a living world, instead of words on a page…it’s intoxicating.” Bex was wistful, full of life and going into her own little world.

“I’m not your play thing!” He spat, taking his spear and walking out.

Bex lowered her ears, saddened. “I didn’t mean it like that…” she whispered.

I have a tendency to not make things as obvious as others expect. I have in-world rules for magic--like no sparkles when Bex draws sometimes--but it doesn't lend well to clarity in art. Then I get frustrated when something I've work hard on gets lost in the background. 

I originally posted this to my patron-only feeds, but I was so proud of it I wanted to show it off.

Urgent Commissions

So, I usually don't post when I'm in need, cause I don't want to come off as desperate...but I am. My computer is my source of income and it's too old for apple to support the OS. And because the OS isn't supported, Adobe can't update to the new Creative Suite that I pay for. Eventually, I'm guessing Apple won't even allow the old OS to function, which leaves me up the creek without a paddle.

So I need a new one.

Unfortunately I don't have hundreds or a thousand dollars to drop on a new one at a whim. I don't make that. (which is a discouragement in and of itself, but beside the point)I desperately need a desktop to work my art jobs.

So, I'm advertising commissions BIG TIME.

How to explain my art to others?

It's hard for me to talk about my art.

Which is why I never do. I just expect people to make up their minds when I post and share my work.

I've been raised to not brag, which has become essential to selling art these days. IT SUCKS. I HATE talking about myself.

That being said, I consider myself very eclectic. Yeah, love fantasy art, but I also do fanart, landscapes, and animals. So, fitting into one subject or style isn't for me. I mainly do digital art, but also watercolor, markers, and ink drawings too! I have experience with oils and acrylic, so define it by media is also tricky. And of course, I also have prints, make charms, and do design work. I don't stick to just ONE type. How am I supposed to answer "what do you do?"???

So I usually just explain that I'm a "fantasy artist", or I draw digital paintings. Then I end up in a long-winded explanation about exactly what I draw. I see the look of confusion on their faces. I see the pity. They think I don't really do anything. They think I'm making something up, scrambling for something to say.

But they don't see I'm always creating. I always have a sketchbook with me. I'm always drawing something.

I still get questions on how people can buy my art, so here it is:

Prints/Originals/Physical Merch:

Bex at the Desk website—I put most of my prints on my website listing. I update the stock regularly. Even if its not in stock I can order more and deliver straight to you.

Fairs/Festivals—I participate in fairs frequently and have discounts while they are going on. I update where I'm going here on tumblr, and one other social media

Anyone be up for $10 sketches? I'm thinking of making it a frequent thing to have ten sketch slots each week. (along with my monthly giveaways)

I'm thinking I'll open up a batch --I want to go for every week, but might start slow at every other week--where people can claim the slot then finish them all and post them together before opening the next batch.
