Beware of the Princess: Prologue (Page 1)
It's been one hell of a journey, but here we are at last at the point where the first pages of Beware of the Princess are ready to make their way out to the world. There's a lot of complex feelings involved with finally doing an official release, with far too that could be said about it to ever put down here. To keep it simple... Thank You. Firstly thank you to all the wonderful CSC members past and present who put time and effort into designing and developing the characters, world and story. Thank you to the artists without which this comic wouldn't be a comic. While losing members of our team has made the journey bittersweet at times, you and your contributions will always be remembered, appreciated and loved. We also want to extend a massive thank you to everyone that ever shot us a message, left a comment or even liked/shared anything to do with this project. Those little bits of support trickling in were what kept us holding onto hope that there was a point to keeping on going even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges.

BotP update 18/03/24
The good news is that we're nearing completion of the prologue chapter of Beware of the Princess. We are so very grateful to those that have expressed their interest in the project, your patience with us through these many delays has been greatly appreciated. We've set ourselves the (finally within reach) goal of publishing the prologue chapter in the first week of April. Hopefully all the pages will be finalised by then, but even if they aren't we're going to start putting them out there anyway just with a staggered release schedule. After the initial prologue chapter, the format BotP takes is going to change from a comic/webtoon/graphic novel format to short written chapters accompanied by as many illustrations as we have the time and effort to include.  Although this isn't the way we had initially hoped to tell this story, we're being realistic about what we can do in order to get updates out to you all in a reasonable time frame; there's no point in trying to tell a story if the updates come out spaced too far apart for the audience to actually remember and care about the characters. Perhaps in the future if this project takes off wildly beyond our expectations then there may be room to go back and redo stuff, but for now we're going to be more realistic with what we hope to deliver. We're still focusing on the final pages of the prologue comic for now, so the exact details of how we're going to publish future instalments haven't been worked out yet. If anyone reading this has particular suggestions for sites or platforms etc. that support illustrated chapters of writing which you would like to see BotP on, then don't hesitate to comment or message to let us know.

Deviantart Core/Diamond Badge Giveaway
About a year ago we bought a year's core membership to promote BotP on Deviantart. Seeing as it's the festive season, now is as good a time as any to give out some diamond badges using all the fragments we've accumulated. (If you're unaware, a diamond badge provides 1 month of core membership and its benefits.) So if you're a deviant artist and you'd like a diamond badge, follow BotP on DA here: https://www.deviantart.com/bewareoftheprincess Then just leave a constructive* comment on a piece of art uploaded there. We'll either give your comment a badge or put one on some artwork you've uploaded. *(Something more detailed than just "Looks cool." or "Badge plz." You could say something about what you specifically like about the characters, ask about the setting or say what you hope might happen in the story. Even if you're saying what you DON'T like you'll probably get a badge if it's actual constructive criticism that helps us improve.) Terms and stuff: -If you're already watching BotP on DA, you can still be part of the giveaway if you leave a comment. -We've got about 15,000 fragments which is enough to give away core membership 50 times. When they're gone the giveaway will be over. -Our Core membership expires on the 2nd Jan 2024 and we probably won't be renewing it. The giveaway will end when the membership expires. -If you would prefer to comment and follow BotP somewhere else (twitter, instagram, Tumblr, Pillowfort etc.) but still want the diamond badge on Deviantart, then you can message us and we can probably sort something out. You can find BotP at different sites here: https://linktr.ee/BewareOfThePrincess  Also note: -Please see above statement regarding constructive criticism. -BotP is not an explicit/NSFW project. Comments that don't respect this or are too lewd will not be eligible and will probably be deleted. -This isn't something we can enforce or anything, but it would be greatly appreciated if you remained watching BotP for updates (at least until launch) rather than just unfollowing the moment you have your badge.

Happy Ash Expressions
Early on we realised that with the vast size difference between our romantic leads, Ash needed big, expressive features so their emotions would still read even in full-body panels where they appear much smaller on the page than Ana. When we tried exaggerating Ash's eyes, we found it alleviated this issue while also giving them the cute and adorable appearance we were aiming for.

Update
We know things have been pretty quiet around here, especially given repeated promises of "developments soon!" The good news is we're at the point where comic pages are starting to get finished! They aren't ready to show in full yet, but you can expect some more previews and stuff soon. At the moment we're going for maximum quality for the first introductory chapter. It's taking some time because we're really polishing up the art and showing off the best we can do. We're hoping to get those pages ready to release to the public in the early weeks of 2024. After that, we're going to be reassessing what the best way to proceed will be based on the audience response. There's... quite a lot of ways that could turn out. We might end up going ahead with the very occasional highly polished updates, or perhaps more frequent ones but with rougher art. We might have to look at putting the story out there in a different form entirely, such as short written chapters with an accompanying illustration or two. (Hell, we've even thrown about the idea of a visual novel!) There's a lot of uncertainty about the future of BotP but we are determined to continue it as best we can.

Sploosh!
Beware of the Princess got effectively put on hold for a couple of months due to a couple of key people doing the whole "getting married" thing. But work is starting to pick up again! There's been lots of experimentation with workflows and the overall style to help get into a good groove with completing panels.
For the first time in a long time the delays are being dealt with faster than they are piling up, so with a bit of luck you can expect more frequent updates from us! (This update was actually originally posted a few weeks ago, but was accidentally posted to the reblogging sideblog! Whoops!)

Things are moving forward!
I'm excited to give y'all this first little peek at the (unfinalised unpolished) storyboards we're working on.
I want to give a big ol' thanks to everyone that has shown interest in the project thus far. It really is just so wonderfully motivating to see people going "Hey, this seems like it might be worth a look!". Every like, reblog and especially the wonderful asks we've got helps us power through the setbacks. (And oh boy has it been ridiculous on that front.)
Hopefully there won't be as big of a delay before the next update.

What does a princess do when she can't decide which necklace goes best with her outfit? She simply gets her attendant to hold it up to see how they compare! This works best when your attendant can actually reach your neck though...
Some cute commissioned art of Ana and Ash from the upcoming "Beware of the Princess" comic done by the wonderful and talented @flowerthornsart
(Seriously, go check her out she does amazing art and is just wonderful to work with if you need a commission!)
P.S. Bonus no-mesh alternative version.

Meet Jot!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jot is an imp who works diligently managing paperwork in the archives of the Eastern Tower. Every imp has some innate magical gift and Jot will happily tell you that hers is the perfect recall of official documents. In fact, Jot will happily tell you almost anything you might need to know regarding facts and figures- especially if you just said something that was incorrect! This tendency has led others to avoid her for being "annoying" even though she's just trying to make friends by being helpful. She really struggles to read people, something which has gotten her in trouble in the past for saying the "wrong" thing and now she just tries to stick with observations that are "right" based on objective fact.
We originally just had an idea for a one-dimensional mansplainy joke character who turned up to "UM, ACTUALLY!" a few times early on. But instead of an annoying dude this character got drawn as this adorable little bean and the rest of us immediately fell in love. (How could we not!?)
Jot's probably the most obviously neurodivergent character out of our main cast because we didn't want to hide that she has a raging case of the 'tism. Some of our other neurodivergent characters are better at masking or just have traits that aren't as classically recognisable. We felt that it was important to reflect the huge variety of neurodivergent people out there in the real world and the differences in how apparent that is.

Some concepts for a fancy outfit for Ash to wear on special occasions. Or maybe just a day-to-day thing? One thing's for certain, the personal attendant of a princess as glamorous as Ana won't be allowed to stay in that drab, tattered old servant outfit forever.

—Record Scratch, Freeze Frame!— Yep, That's me!
Tumblr media
You're probably wondering why I'm all anxious in this picture.
Well it all started when I received a big promotion. Royal Attendant! Pretty cool, right? Well unfortunately my charge is Princess Ana, who has a bit of a reputation for having a major attitude problem! I was told Her Highness would probably need cheering up after getting some bad news, but Ana seemed to be in a surprisingly good mood.
But Whoah-oh! What's this? Turns out she's only cool because nobody's actually told her yet! Now it's up to me to break some bad news to a twelve-foot tall temperamental demon! How am I going to get myself out of this crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrazy situation!?
Join me, Ash, this summer* for more zany, wacky hijinx** on "Beware of the Princess"***
*Webcomic may not actually be ready by summer. **Zaniness, Wackiness and Hijinxitude of this post may or may not just a dumb gimmick to share this piece of concept art. ***Webcomic name subject to change.

In terms of likes anddiskes-
Ash doesn't have much access to books, but they LOVE reading when they get the chance. As a kid they were able to salvage a damaged book about animals and they got the few literate servants to read it to them so many times that they memorised it and managed to teach themselves the basics from that. It's something they're proud of because they worked so hard to progress their skills from there and it's quite unusual for someone like Ash to have any degree of literacy at all. Other than a couple of sets of clothes and a few bare necessities that damaged animal book is Ash's only personal possession and the only object they have any attachment to. It also brings me on to...
Animals! They spent so long poring over that book and imagining the animals described within gave Ash a big interest in nature. They're fond of animals of all kinds, but once again they have had little opportunity to explore this passion. They have always wanted to work in the stables, but the few jobs that open up there go to experienced professionals from outside. (Demons seem to have a strange dislike for horses so the stables only get used to house the horses of visiting nobles who tend to be snobby about who looks after their livestock.) Ash tends to avoid kitchen work if possible because it presents them with uncomfortable reminders about where food comes from.
Another thing they really like is when they get to go on jobs that take them out of the castle and into town. They really enjoy meeting new people, going new places and seeing new things, even though they've never been more than a few miles away from the palace since they came to it as a baby. It's something they yearn to do once their indenture is up, but they try not to dwell on it too much. Rather than making themselves miserable by lamenting what is beyond their grasp, they have the attitude where they choose to focus on appreciating what they do have.
Their childhood friend, a servant boy named Wrynn, has derided this attitude as being unambitious or even cowardly. Ash however sees it as being very practical- Wrynn feels a hundred times as frustrated and "trapped" in the palace, despite how he's not an indentured servant and has the freedom to leave if he chose to.
And I guess mentioning that practicality kind of leads into the last thing you asked about: How does Ash see the world?
Practical is honesty a pretty good summary of the lens they view things through. That's not to say that they are harsh or overly utilitarian, quite the opposite. They are a do-er, and they use their resourcefulness to understand a bad situation and figure out the best thing that's within their power to do.
They also aren't someone who is likely to be swayed by the opinions of others or social norms. They like to understand things for themselves and make their own calls on what feels right to them. This most obviously manifests in the way they have chosen to express their identity in a way that doesn't fit with the traditional gender binary, but it also extends to their willingness to question whether things really were better in the "good old days" or if that's just how bitter old men choose to remember the time before the kingdom was being run by demons.
Thanks again for asking these questions btw, it's always useful to write down stuff about these characters in a way that compresses a vast cloud of vague notions into more concrete ideals to write into the character!
so, whats up with ash? its cool to see a nonbinary fantasy character, and based on what art youve posted of them im interested to see the dynamic between them and ana
Ooh, what would you like to know? Basics are:
They are Eighteen and a half years old which makes them too young to have been alive in the "old days" before demons arrived.
All they know about their origins is that their village burnt down and some soldiers found them in the wreckage and took them back to the royal palace. They were covered in ashes thus getting named "The Ash Baby" which eventually just became "Ash".
They're an indentured servant that will be free to go once they finish paying off what the costs of raising them. (It's probably going to take a while because they're still paying room and board.)
Growing up in the palace Ash spent a fair amount of time around lesser demons and imps, so they don't really see demons as outsiders like a lot of humans do. In fact, the closest thing they have to a parental figure is Obadiah the Steward, a lesser demon.
They appreciate that demons have a more lax attitude towards gender, which allowed them to present how they feel comfortable presenting.
Personality-wise they're quite a fun, caring person that tries to get along with everyone. Physical wealth has always been something beyond their grasp so they found happiness in forming meaningful bonds with people instead.
The story begins with them receiving an unexpected promotion that puts them way out of their comfortable little existence. They immediately realise that they're dangerously out of their depth and they have to grapple with anxiety and uncertainty for the first time in their life.
One thing they're quite proud of is the fact that they can read and (just barely) write.
So uh... I guess that probably covers "What's up with Ash"?
(Please feel free to ask anything more though!)
(And P. S. thanks for the ask!)

is Ana very pretty is she seeing anyone ?
Ana is indeed very pretty! Thus far the people around her have largely been successful in steering her away from romantic pursuits. There's been a couple of instances over her teenage years when something inspired a brief fixation on dating for a few days, but those weren't really based on liking a person so much as they were just deciding that it's the sort of thing a princess ought to do. In the last year (since she turned eighteen) other kingdoms have been making inquiries or sending the sort of gifts that have made it much harder for certain people to keep courtship out of Ana's mind.
She just kind of assumes that these things are being handled for her and pretty soon she'll have be offered a selection of suitors to take her pick from. I wonder if anyone will catch her eye in the meantime...

may i ask about the hammer ana is holding in several of the images youve done? is it important or just a preference for design?
It's actually meant to be a croquet mallet, lol.
It just got hastily jotted down as a placeholder without referencing the actual dimensions or proportions of a croquet mallet, so I guess it ended up looking more like a war hammer despite Ana not being a fighter or weapon-user of any kind.
(That's not to say that she's opposed to violence though, you certainly wouldn't want to underestimate her in that regard!)
