I do scenes like this and I calculate per hour spent. They're often Something around 400$-600$ with two characters, being lineless = less time spent so its cheaper. Thats also around the price for the lubricious stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quick scene alternative, I do full background speedpaints like those for 150$
I also do customs. Heres a couple random ones.

Experimenting with different visual cues to show that a character is not quite fluent in a language yet. Commentary and extras below the cut. (the other language is kalaallisut, a real language spoken in greenland, albeit machine translated and probs not 100% accurate)
1. Blurred bits
I feel like this one isn't very visually pleasing, but it speaks to me more regarding how learning a language feels. You don't quite make out what the words are, and slowly pick up bits from what is being said. This also adds room for uncertainty on the character's POV, the speech bubble wouldn't be theirs, but what you read off it would be their thoughts regarding whats being said. The blur also helps keeping things incomprehensible even if you speak the other language being spoken.
2. Bits in multiple languages
This one adds room for out of the speech bubble commentary. It doesn't make misunderstandings as easy as with the blurred speech, and with an agglutinative language like kalaallisut it might end up being confusing to organise or break the sentence's syntax. It looks cleaner than the blurred bits though, and it still makes the other language incomprehensible (if you dont speak kalaallisut, that is). Colour coding would help indicate whats being understood by the main character and what isnt, and the texts would slowly be fully red across the chapters.
3. Faded colour to indicate not understanding
This makes the reader able to understand everything, and relies on the reader memorising that faded = not understood by the character. Other than that, colour coding would indicate a change of languages.
I like the reader only understanding what the character can understand and I like the types that leave kalaallisut still visible. Though option 3 might be cleaner and easier to manange.
4. Faded colour + blur
This is something I thought after posting it earlier on patreon. Blurring the parts the main character wouldn't understand can be a way for the brain to quickly skip through the missed text, in hopes that at least the first reading will match what the character is understanding.
Tumblr media
Also, for the enjoyment of my 4 greenlandic followers, heres the machine translated kalaallisut version I used for 1 & 2. I had to use a double way translation tool and an annotation tool to be sure the words were somewhat related to what I wanted them to be. I can't really fact check it though, so I hope that whichever way the translator messed up is at least worth a chuckle.

Xoys of neighbooring cultures showing their casual and formal gear. Still figuring out how to go around with their bodies and markings.
Its common to xoy cultures to shave their fur and then paint the furless skin. Some do tattoos and keep a constant shaved look, or only shave to reveal the tattoos in specific circumstances.
Theres many reasons why a xoy would shave and/or paint their skin. Some cultures strictly do those in ceremonies. Some are very casual about it. In urban areas, its common to see that as an act of dedication, which brings seriousness to formal events. Horn carving and painting, on the other hand, requires less effort - even if some deep horn carving or horn shaping tools require a lot of work and endurance in the moment or during horn growth, once its done it'll be permanent (or long lasting, in the case of paints), only needing to be redone after the horns are cast. So they aren't seen as something formal or imposing but rather as a display of culture and creativity. Xoys live in the tropics and there is not much of a need to protect oneself from the environment there, meaning their traditional adornments have different purposes and coverage needs from a cotton shirt, for example. Many of their things are temporary and need to be redone or repaired after a few uses, which adds extra meaning and importance to the act of crafting and creating. Xoys started to use fabric in clothing for practical reasons in big urban centers and the fashion spread. Their go-to cut is a long fabric that is tied around the belly and hangs between the legs, which used to protect the crotch area from touching the environment. This fabric is tied in a way that absorbs sweat and minimises chaving which would make them have furless patches. They got pants from humans which are more efficient regarding the crotch protection business, but they kept the hanging fabric because they like the looks and cultural significance of it. Xoys dont cover much of their body because they're furred and they'd overheat. They'll basically only cover their shoulders in winter. Their breasts can be tucked inside the torso piece, which depends on the xoy's personal preferences and on how cold it is. Xoys have different views on what being naked is. Some may think someone with carved horns and no clothes isn't naked, because they are wearing the carving. Some put value in specific accessories, like bands or earrings. They don't sexualise or condone being without any clothing, though it can be seen as immaturity or being lazy. Unless you're working with something that makes you and your clothing filthy - then being naked is often the prefferable option for any xoy involved. Igutsak, the yellow xoy I've drawn before, is from a culture that use horn carvings as a naked/not naked determinator, and without them he'd feel very naked even if he had clothes covering his whole body and horns. Xoys aren't representative of a specific human culture but they're on their word's equivalent of brazil so they do things and use materials that would make sense on their environment. Those are generalistic things observed in many cultures across south america. I'd rather avoid xoys being a 1:1 to specific brazilian cultures as theres humans in their world and I don't want there to be a "beastified" culture next to a "still human" one. I do want them to be recognisable as brazilians, though. 🍅 High res with separate files and naked files on patreon Commissions | Patreon | Ko-fi | Other sites

Doe is a human/dragon hybrid who looks like a sphinx. They're dragon sized, too. In their world, when parents are incompatible, they might resource to magic to create a child. Doe's unusual looks are due to that.

Different layers of a xoy's ornaments. The face is shaved and the fur is trimmed in angular equally leveled cuts. A yellow pigment is used on the face, then red is used to create patterns following the flow of the facial muscles. The horn carvings are painted black and red. Earrings are then added and a neck piece is balanced. The neck piece is tied on the horns, with a heavy long haired knot on the back. This piece is crafted in a way that it resembles wings and the xoy's movement and dance will cause it to move in assymetric ways. The piece relies on the balance and distribuition of different weights to stay in place, which makes it looks like its flying. One year of patreon minis 72 minis done since I started with them a year ago! thanks everyone for making this possible! :) Theres also the minis I did as non-patreon commissions which I didnt count or added, but I wont doubt theres a 100 of them! its been really neat to work on those - they're fun, carefree, and really helped me focus and capture the things that really matter on a character. They might've helped me with my speed regarding hourly speedpaint commissions, and they defs helped me with the kind of linework i've picked for animations. so again thanks everyone for your support!! 💙 Those are available on my patreon for 45$/mo!
