literally nothing to add to the watchers apology because they said everything I expected them to 🤷 duh you fucked up, you showed no consideration for international fans and those who watch your content because it's widely aviable. it was obvious they can't already back down from the streamer and the option they presented now should've been the only option from the start if they were dead set on having their own platform. but especially with Sara making that Tumblr post it all leaves bad taste in my mouth. idk when I'll be back to watching their content because it just doesn't feel the same

so... i wanted to be done with this watcher stuff. but then i saw on reddit that one of their eXCluSivE nEw CoNtEnT got leaked, you know "road files" which is basically a behind the scenes video for ghost files. which is a nice idea. ...................... but the video lasts 8 minutes. you pay, 6 dollars a month, the first video you get is an 8 minutes video. opening with ryan saying "well this could be the only time we do that". so. huh, not new exclusive content, then? - since they want to be compared to tv, let's compare that to a behind the scenes video/film some tv shows make, for example the star wars ones, on disney+, that are minimum at least 20 minutes long if not more, way more, like 45+ minutes. and then you have the bts elements of a ghost files. so now, i can truly say: i do not get how their ghost files' seasons cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. like there's nothing in the video that warrants this video not costing them... like 20k at most. (and i mean that without counting paying the employees/crew, because i'd argue they do that with their general revenues, and not just their revenues out of the ghost files seasons). and that's without even delving into everything that's weird about how much money they're spending by making dumb shit like sending a "scouting crew" before them... you're ghost hunting, like what's the point of that?? and as i suspected when they switched to watcher, this video just proved how scripted, over-prepared the whole concept of "ghost hunting" became when they switched from buzzfeed unsolved to watcher. so you gotta tell me that the "unscripted, 100% natural" episode of ghost files, is actually made with like 10 other people in the room, behind the camera, the guys having entered and toured the "haunted building" like 10 times before the cameras start rolling, producers, crews and all and all having scouted the building (here, a small house) dozens of times already. legit. h u h ????? then they went to see dune 2, hung around in their hotel rooms, ate burgers, and the whole thing lasted two days out of their schedule... and then credits roll with no less than like 20 people credited for a behind the scenes video, where most of the footage is from ryan's phone. huh??? and that costs y'all hundreds of thousands of dollars??? and this is the "tv quality" exclusive new content we get if we pay the 6 dollars a month?? 🙃

People arent mad because we don't believe that they don't deserve to earn money and be creatively free. people are mad because apparently 6 dollars is supposed to be what everyone can afford! actually it isn't! there are international fans and dollars are fucking expensive.a lot of us can't afford to spend additional money for a service that provides contents of one YouTube channel. We're are in a living costs crisis and sure the boys aren't rich (I mean owning a tesla is a sign of wealth but OK) but they're in a way more comfortable situation than a lot of us.

fisrt of all they paint themselves as "a digital media studio that creates television-caliber series" (qoute from the site) so theres that

second no one would say anything if they had no other means of earning money, but watcher has a patreon, expensive merch (especially for fans outside of the us), they get big sponsorships and had tours.

if you watch the video its clear the most emphasis is being put on the whole streamer funding stevens expensive shows where he gets to eat expensive food which in current climate is just very tone deaf, because a lot of regular folk struggle to have money for food. even when u go to the watchertv site on the subscribe page the first things in a description of the site are "travel season" and "food, travel". this whole project isnt for fans, its very much steven centered thats why we dont want to support it even if we could

as an european fan 6 dollars a month is a lot especially for a service that rn only hosts content we had for free.

The night before Watcher's big Announcement

4/18/24; no spoilers here. Just a bit of reflection.

12 years ago, I started blogging on this Tumblr page to capture my feelings and where I was at. Even though so much has changed, it also feels like nothing at all has changed. Back then, I was a kid from Ohio just trying to make a living off YouTube. At the time, I didn't even know how to operate a camera, how to act on screen, or even how to edit a video. But I knew that I loved the process of making videos, and that propelled me day by day.

When I started making YouTube videos in 2012, I gave myself 4 years before I'd call it quits. 4 years to make a living or I'd reconsider and find a different career path. Looking back, I didn't realize how close I cut it. But it really wasn't until 3 years in that I made a hit. And I thank God every day because it was some combination of luck, hard work. and divine intervention that somehow someway led me to work at BuzzFeed, create Worth It, meet Ryan and Shane, launch Watcher, and well.. the rest is history.

That being said, I'm at a crossroads here again. Tomorrow is kind of a big day for me and our team. It's nerve-wracking to take risks at this stage of my career and company's life. Who knows where things will go? Will we succeed or will we fall flat on our face? I truly don't know. But no matter what, I just wanted to take this time to dwell in a place of gratitude. Thank you to all the people who have supported my career, team Watcher, and the shows we make. I can't believe this is my job that I get to wake up and do every single day. Speaking of job, thank you to my team at Watcher, I love you and am so grateful for all of you. I can't believe how hard you all work day in and day out to make the beautiful videos and shows that we do. Thank you to my wife, thank you to my family and friends, thank you to our investors/mentors, and thank you to God.

For some reason this journal entry came out like an acceptance speech at the People's Choice Awards. Whoops. I honestly don't even know what I wanted to get across when I started writing but that's it for now. Tomorrow's a big day and I don't know what this means for myself or for Watcher's. But what I do know is that it's been the best five years of my life building Watcher and I thank God every day for that.

I had a dream that there were Jerma impersonators. Like Elvis impersonators, but for Jerma. And like Elvis impersonators, a large majority of them could officiate weddings. So Jerma did a stream where he managed to hire as many as he could to officiate a wedding between himself and another Jerma impersonator. It was just a church full of Jermas all speaking over each other, while Real Jerma was trying to get them to settle down.
