Finally caught up to the dog that’s been ripping up the trash bags in our bin.
It’s a squirrel.
Been a squirrel the whole time.
I have to fight a squirrel now, and I am not ready.

"Books will always be essential for some people. And bookshops are a place for those people to discover the books that will become important to them. I will never allow bookshops to vanish from this world."

Too sick to be a person today, so I’m gonna find a character and immerse myself in their problems for a while.

Facing Darkness
Can I tell you about one of my favorite shows ever?
Ha. It’s funny when I ask, because I’m going to tell you anyway. Whether you like it or not.
That’s a threat.
Anyway, I love the old Twilight Zone tv shows.
Retro, right?
They are fantastic and weird and twist around on you so quickly, and I love everything about it. It is one of the great regrets of my life that I didn’t get to write for that show, because that kind of freedom as a writer would have been so much fun.
I lean toward the weird and wacky when I write.
Unfortunately, when I get paid to write, I have to lean away from that. Gotta tone it down for the paycheck.
Sigh.
But, anyway. I love the old Twilight Zone tv show. But when I was a young teen/preteen, I was terrified by it. Not so much the aliens and other worlds and even alternate dimensions, but the supernatural freaked me out.
Okay, the ghosts freaked me out.
Ironically, considering I write very ghostly fantasy nowadays.
But back then, I was terrified by them, and after dark, at night, I could conjure up any number of ghosts and ghouls in my hallways and make myself so afraid that I was nauseous. The wrong kind of movies or books or anything could set me off, but looking back, there is one book that I wish—I wish—that I had read.
Coraline.
Because Coraline is haunting and terrifying and absolutely kind of scary that would have kept me up almost every night.
But Coraline herself, with her matter-of-fact bravery and her cleverness and her daring, was absolutely the kind of protagonist that might have helped me learn to be brave. Because she was scared too. I don’t think there was almost any point in the book where Coraline wasn’t scared.
But she was also so, so courageous, and she could have taught me that I could be both. She kept her head when things were awful, and more than that, she was able to be kind in the midst of her fear. Which is so hard.
I love the world of Coraline, and the Other Mother is one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever come across, but Coraline herself makes the book for me. I want to be like her when I grow up. As brave as she was. As daring. As bold.
I’ll get there eventually. As you can tell from my writing, my fear of ghosts doesn’t hold me back anymore.
