It was just a dream.
__________
After being told by the ghost of his daughter Ruby that he wasn't sick, Tommy Shelby finds out it was just a dream. Old faces lead him overseas to get the help that everyone denied him in England.
__________
Chapter one.
“You’re not sick...” Echoes of the young female's voice sounded through Tommy’s ears, telling him what he wanted to hear. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he inhaled deeply before making any attempt to get up from the hard floor.
Deep groans muffled passed his slightly parted lips when he attempted to get to his feet. Tommy’s hands were grazed, and dirt ridden after landing on the floor harshly. With squinted eyes he tried to locate the horse he had fallen from during the dark moments where he found himself back in the tunnels. To anyone else it was a seizure, but Tommy saw nothing but darkness and enemies within the tunnels.
Exhaustion overpowered Tommy, but he was in the middle of nowhere right now. Everything that he had, had just gone up in flames. Perhaps a way of moving on the past, but was it really? He was still being dragged under in his mind during it seizure that hit him. But he wasn’t sick, right?
Wrong.
Three months had passed since Tommy turned his back on the burning cart, and the things that had turned him into the man many feared. He’d been to see a Doctor and had it confirmed that did indeed have Intracranial Tuberculoma although, the life expectancy wasn’t quite the same as what Tommy had been told. It was more 12-24 months without treatment. Treatment being surgery of which had been deemed too risky.
He had tried to lay low and away from family, but Charlie Strong had slipped up when talking to Ada. Tommy had been down to see Charlie a few times since his disappearance.
“When the bloody hell were you gonna tell us eh?!” A loud female with a strong Birmingham accent exclaimed after dropping her heels down the steps on board the January. Tommy had been staying there since the day his cart was drawn to ash. “We all thought you were dead, Tommy!” She proceeded to hiss and shout until she reached the corner sofa where her brother was laid. “May as well be.” Tommy uttered under his breath as he rubbed his eyes. “What?” Ada growled not quite sure she had heard his words correctly. “S’good to see you, Ada..” Tommy’s voice was a little broken. He sat up slowly and just stared at the female whose stance hadn’t changed since she arrived.
Arthur had told Ada about the diagnosis Tommy had been given. It was eating him away keeping it to himself, and Ada knew something was bothering her brother. She did have to force it out of him though.
“So, were you hoping you’d just slip away, and everyone would forget about you?” Ada asked finally moving from the spot she had been in, so that Tommy could get up. He had completely ignored his sisters words but gasped a little when she grabbed his upper arm and stopped him in his tracks. “Why didn’t you tell me, Tommy?” There was a moment of silence as the siblings just stared one another out, until Ada’s vision blurred when tears filled and threatened to spill out. She pulled her brother into a hug and just closed her eyes. Tommy clenched his jaw tightly as he swallowed hard. His arms slowly wrapped around his sister and he whispered quietly. “I didn’t want to tell anyone, Ada. No one. I don’t want pitying, or sympathy.” Tommy spoke pulling away slowly as he exhaled deeply.
“For God sake, Tommy..” Ada turned around watching her brother stumble his way towards the small sink where he picked up a glass to fill it with water. “For once please, just think of others, not yourself?” Ada sighed and sat down on the sofa that curled around the table. Her nose twitched at the lingering smell of vomit, mixed with whiskey. Yuck. She didn’t give Tommy chance to answer her question since she was now trailing on about his living conditions. “This place is disgusting, Tommy..” She frowned.
After gulping a glass of water, Tommy spoke. “It’s just temporary, until I sort something.” Of course Tommy had no intentions in getting anywhere else to live. Why would he when his time was running out?
“This place is no good for you, Tommy. There’s better homes to stay in than here..” Ada kept going on, and on until Tommy snapped unintentionally. “Ada, just stop it!” He spat. “I don’t want no fookin’ house to stay in.” Heaving heavily, Tommy made his way towards the steps that lead him up onto the top deck of the canal boat, Ada followed swiftly.
There was no one else around apart from the Shelby siblings. The sound of the water sloshing between the boat and the wall was the only sounds to be heard. Ada saw her brother trying to walk away from her after he climbed off the boat. Tommy was trying to avoid any more stress. He had begun to realise that stress was one of many triggers that brought on a seizure. He didn’t want anyone to know about his condition never mind have his sister present should he fall to the ground. “Tommy! Come back, where the hell are you going?” Ada shouted and began to run after him, eventually catching up with him under the bridge he’d once stood on contemplating on jumping off it.
Her hands gripped his upper arms and held him upright. “You need to talk to me..” She whispered and tapped his cheek. “Oi, don’t ignore me. If you think you’re going through this alone, then you can think again..” she insisted. “How long have they given you?” She asked and just gulped silently when Tommy told her 12-24 months.
“She.. She told me I wasn’t sick, Ada..” Tommy whispered heavily. “Who did?” Ada frowned. He clearly was very sick, she could see it with her own eyes right now. “Ruby. She told me I wasn’t sick..” He repeated. Ada inhaled deeply before speaking. “Thomas, you saw what you wanted to see. You never got to say goodbye to her, you’re hearing what you want to be real but it’s just a dream..” She felt guilty for shattering his hopes, but she needed to be honest with him.
Ada managed to persuade Tommy to leave the January. The environment wasn’t right for him. She took him down to London where she would keep a roof over his head at her home until he had been persuaded enough to find a property to live in. “Get in there and have a bath please? If I smell anymore vomit today, I will vomit myself..” She sighed and gestured up the stairs to Tommy who nodded and followed her orders.
“Uncle Tommy?” Karl spoke appearing from his younger half sisters bedroom after reading her a bedtime story. “Not now, Karl. He is going for a bath. I need some of your trousers and a shirt, and some pyjama’s..” Ada piped up quietly. Karl was a tall young man, his clothes were bound to fit Tommy. He went to his room and routed through his drawers to retrieve some clothing for his uncle, but was knocked down when he tried to question his mother about the situation.
The hot water stung Tommy’s skin when it came into contact with it. Slowly, he sunk his naked body down trying to allow himself to adjust to the heat that engulfed him. His eyes closed and he tilted his head back letting the silence scream out. “Pyjama's are outside the door, Tommy.” Ada called out from the other side of the bathroom door.
After washed, dried and dressed freshly, Tommy made his way down the stairs where Ada had turned the sofa into a bed for him. A few pillows and a blanket. It was far better than the make shift bed on board the January. “Right. There’s some tea there and toast. You look like you’ve not eaten in ages.” She pointed to the small table of contents. “If you need anything I’ll be upstairs.” Ada told her brother, then retired to bed.
Tommy sipped his tea and took a few bites of toast but left the rest for later (whenever later was). He laid back on the sofa, and he let his mind ponder a little too much into the past he thought had been left behind as he was dosing off to sleep.
