The waterfall at the @portlandjapanesegarden. I just love to go watch the koi drift around and try to soak up their vibe. They have to be the most laid-back creatures on the planet. Don’t you think that koi probably sleep really, really well? I bet they just sink to the bottom of that nice pond and zzzzzzzzz. I haven’t been posting all of these, but I have been doing them…every bird I hear with my Merlin bird ID app from @cornellbirds goes into a sketchbook. I have just over 100 birds, so it makes a good 100 day project to draw them & write down some weird facts about them. Headed to Tahiti & New Zealand soon, where I hope to add lots of new birds! I’ve tried lots of different media with these sketches, but what I really seem to like best is a light pencil sketch, followed by very loose blobby watercolor (swipe to see), followed by colored pencil. Markers, a fude pen, and a pre-painted page. I do love a pre-painted page in a city. I mean, do we really need to know which building is grey and which one is brown? And I realized that using markers for more color on top means that you don’t really disturb the watercolor underneath. The question is always—what color markers to take? Puget Sound in better weather! Green and summery! I got a new magenta that I worked in there too and I love it. This is acrylic ink and acryla gouache on @stillmanandbirn zeta paper. I’m realizing that acrylic ink can be great for things like sky and water, where you want really sheer, luminous color. Then acryla gouache layers over it beautifully. This time, I just dropped a little ink on the same paper palette I used for the paint, and ended up mixing it in to other colors.
