seconding this!! (gonna share my experience below, it ends up a bit ranty so click away if this is a sensitive topic for you)

it’s been pretty much a whole year of trying to figure out my POTS symptoms, and i was trying to figure them out before i even knew what dysautonomia was, but despite showing evidence and having repeated doctors appointments i still haven’t been able to just ‘get a damn diagnosis’ 🥲 i only just had my first cardiology appointment last week, waiting times are very long where i live as our healthcare system is very underfunded, and not to mention the fact that im AFAB and overweight, so majority of my doctors try to blame everything on hormones or weight. i’ve had to fight so hard to be referred to a cardiologist because, despite my evident heart rate issues, my doctors only wanted to refer me to a dietician and put me on the pill.

so yeah. i’ve been trying to get a diagnosis for a while now, even other health conditions too. i’ve been trying to get one of my other health issues sorted for over 3 years now and im still not there yet, but im trying. i can’t physically do anything more as i don’t have the money to go for private healthcare. at my cardio appt i’ve managed to get further and have been diagnosed with POTS but am still getting monitors + a tilt table to confirm it.

but, it would’ve caused me more harm in the past year to tell myself “no, i can’t think i have POTS until i have a formal diagnosis, so i won’t tell anyone or get any beneficial accommodations for myself (not that i get many anyway lol), i won’t take those extra salt shots or electrolytes which help me to not pass out, and i’ll bottle up all the mental health issues it’s causing me, because i wont know if i’m ‘faking’ it until a stranger tells me in a few years (if im lucky)”.

im not ‘choosing to be ill’, i don’t want to make things harder for those already diagnosed etc., but i can’t live the way i do and pretend that nothing’s wrong with me when it makes such an imprint on my daily life.

I'm waiting for people like this to realize that people faking aren't the full issue, a part of the problem, YES. But people faking a disorder/illness isn't why it's hard for people that genuinely have symptoms to get diagnosed. NEWS FLASH!!

It's ableism. Its doctors being lazy and actively refusing to treat people or care enough about their symptoms. Someone could come into an office with a thick ass folder that documents all of their symptoms and they would STILL get blown off. It's even worse if that patient is a minority or AFAB.

The tags also reek of ignorance. Not everyone can just "go get a damn diagnosis". Not everyone can afford it or in a safe situation to do so. And even if you can go, depending on the circumstances, you might not even be believed.

And I'm saying this as someone who is AFAB and Black. Someone who has both professionally and self diagnoses of things (with full research). Someone who got a diagnosis YEARS late due to how my community treats disorders/illnesses/mental health.

Tldr; be mad at the doctors that refuse to do their jobs they worked so hard for properly. Putting all the blame on people that fake things does nothing but makes people point fingers at each other.

hi! unfortunately i don’t think i can say much as i’ve only used a wheelchair a few times in a hospital, and i’m not paralysed so that would very likely make things different (e.g the type of wheelchair & any custom features that would benefit your character’s needs). if i find any resources/useful things from wheelchair users i’ll edit this post to add the links! what i’d recommend most tho is researching about paralysis, the symptoms and how people often cope with those symptoms so you can apply those to your character :)

a few things i would think to note though, just from the times i have used a wheelchair:

don’t make any other characters lean on the wheelchair! i’m pretty sure it disrupts the weight distribution and it could be dangerous as it may cause the wheelchair to tip. also idk i personally just wouldn’t really want that (maybe check with other users too tho)

make sure your other characters ask before pushing them in their wheelchair! if the wheelchair is basically what allows the user to go out and move around, someone just grabbing your wheelchair and pushing you is like someone grabbing a person who’s standing up in the street and just running off with them 😭 kinda feels like a kidnapping LMAO so please don’t do that

hello! i have a quick question for people who use wheelchairs:

i'm currently making a character that uses a wheelchair. they use the wheelchair because they got into a severely bad car accident, which caused both of their legs to become permanently paralyzed. since i don't use a wheelchair & i'm not paralyzed, i don't know much about wheelchairs or being paralyzed! here are the things i want to know:

in my story, how can i not be offensive/incorrect when talking about my character?

since my character is paralyzed, would that mean that they have to stay in the wheelchair at all times, or would it be possible for my character to stand up & walk a few steps sometimes?

what are basic do's & don'ts of writing a character that uses a wheelchair?

if i'm coming across as ableist, i'm incredibly sorry! i just don't want to offend anybody by writing a character who uses a wheelchair incorrectly :)
