How Theatre Has Developed The City
Tumblr media
THE ATLANTIC: How DC Became America's Second Most Important Theater Town By Amanda Erickson, September 2013
Related to discussions around Detroit is news and discussion of the changes to the social and physical landscape of Washington, DC's neighborhoods. Many are attributing these changes to ambitious development plans that included space for arts organizations in an attempt to bolster culture and nightlife in the District. DC's theatre community is now flourishing and Amanda Erickson is going so far as to call DC "America's second most important theater town."

For more on theatre and arts organizations and how they contribute to the development of various neighborhoods in the District, read this recent Nelson Pressley piece from THE WASHINGTON POST: "Shakespeare Theatre's tenancy fight springs from DC urban renewal plan" (The Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Lansburgh building landlords have since reached a settlement).

Once Connected, Now Alone
Tumblr media
THE ATLANTIC: Heartbreaking Photos of Lonely Rowhouses By Mark Byrnes, September 2013
The rowhouse is a signature of Baltimore architecture. In this article, Atlantic Associate Editor Mark Byrnes talks with photographer Ben Marcin about his collection of photographs of row houses that now stand alone. Marcin's work includes photographs of houses in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and cities in New Jersey. In many cases, these structures stand as symbols of our economic moment.
Byrnes also writes briefly about the $22 million the City of Baltimore plans to spend to tear down nearly 1500 abandon houses that have become markers of "urban neglect."
"One resident tells the Sun, 'We just don't want a lot of tracts of vacant land like Detroit.'"

"The Summer I Discovered Suburbia"
Tumblr media
NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE: The Summer I Discovered Suburbia by Ada Calhoun, August 2013
"Ohio was heaven. I loved riding bikes down empty sidewalks. I loved being covered with bug spray and lying in the backyard, looking at the stars. I loved that there always seemed to be roaming gangs of kids, snacks on paper plates and ice-cold cans of soda. I loved Blizzards (soft-serve ice cream from Dairy Queen, with candy mashed into it). As my parents tell it, when they picked me up from the airport, the first thing I said to them — people who had fled their suburban childhoods and prided themselves on having raised 'a city kid' — was an enraged hiss: 'You didn’t tell me about all that!'"

Big Businesses Entering Small Towns
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON POST: Middleburg prepares for a posh newcomer by Caitlin Gibson, August 2013
"In a community of less than 700 people, the arrival of what’s widely reported to be a $130 million luxury complex, designed to lure high-end leisure lovers and corporate power players, has drawn a range of strong reactions."
"When Johnson purchased the 340-acre property in 2002 and announced her plans to build a five-star inn and spa, the Middleburg community was split between those who questioned the project and those who welcomed it: Would the development forever alter a cherished way of life in the historic, close-knit town? Or would it offer a needed economic boon?"

NY TIMES ARTS BEAT:  "Detroit Institute of Arts Could Lose Regional Tax Funds" By Randy Kennedy, August 2013
"On Tuesday, officials in Oakland County — one of three Michigan counties that agreed last year to institute a property tax increase to save the Detroit Institute from devastating budget cuts — unanimously approved a resolution warning that any attempt to use the museum’s collection or budget to raise money for the city’s creditors would “terminate any obligation” of the county to continue to provide support."

Leaving The Suburbs Behind
Tumblr media
Leigh Gallagher, an assistant managing editor of Fortune magazine, is the author of "The End of the Suburbs: Where The American Dream is Moving" which chronicles the growing trend of Americans leaving the suburbs for homes in more urban settings- arguably marking the end of the traditional American dream as we know it.
“It’s not just about moving back to the city, it’s not like everyone wants to live in a New York City skyscraper,” said Gallagher. “People want to be in communities that are livelier, where they can get to know their neighbors more.”
