New theory: Nebula is a dragonfly.
Does it make sense with her theming? No. Do her wings match the dragonflies on her shoes? Yes. Case closed.
Tumblr media
Again with the space theming! The Pixlings are really cooking something up with that. It's unclear what creature Nebula is meant to be exactly, perhaps a sort of alien. Her diamond forehead gem has detailing that adds more points to it, making it an eight-pointed shape if you look closely enough, though different than Catlyn's actual eight-pointed star gem.
There's a gradient on her forearms from blue to white, and while it's harder to see it appears to be the same for her lower legs. Her diamond/eight-pointed shape is repeated on her shirt, along with two intersecting ovals reminiscent of an atomic structure, or maybe the NASA logo? It evokes more space vibes for me. Her wings have a gradient of purple-pink to the light blue of her skin tone, and have molded details of stars and swirls. Her skirt is cut into pointed segments like leaves(?), and has a sparse print of white stars. Her ears are also gradient from blue skin to purple tips, which makes them look flushed with cold imo. (the cold of space???)
Her shoes have the same purplely-blue gradient as her wings, but have molded details of...a dragonfly? The straps appear to be studded.
I'm honestly waiting for it to turn out that Nebula's actually a polar bear, or a fish, or something.

The ear mold looks very similar to Flitta's. Purple face has butterfly eye makeup, pale face has flower petal-looking eye makeup. The crescent shapes for the forehead gems makes me think of a celestial theme, but those other details give more basic fairy vibes. We do have a weird number of star/space themes across the Pixlings, with Unia (once Celestia) and Catlyn (once Starla) both having star gems that don't necessarily match the animal/creature of the character (unicorn and cat respectively).

From the Kayla X “Legendary Spirits” blind box figure collection:
Her name is Forgotten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one was very easy to find! She's the Chinese goddess of forgetfulness/oblivion, Meng Po. In the realm of the dead Diyu, Meng Po gives the dead her soup (in English the 'Five Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness') to wipe their memories so they can be reincarnated with no memories of their previous life or their time spent in Diyu.
She has red spider lilies (lycoris radiata) in her hair. Red spider lilies are poisonous flowers native to East Asia, and in ancient China were planted over the graves of the recently deceased to prevent animals from digging them up and disturbing them. Some sources also say that in Buddhism they guide the dead down the path to reincarnation (and toward Meng Po)!
She has two souls moving around at her feet, twining up her walking stick and peering up at her soup.
I couldn't find anything in particular about a lantern walking stick with an eye on it. There's the myth of a magic lotus lantern whose light defeats evil; there's also the Japanese yokai chōchin'obake, the 'paper lantern ghost' which is pretty close, but is generally depicted with two eyes rather than one, and has a long tongue. It's also distinctly Japanese rather than Chinese.
But overall, that's Forgotten, a representation of the goddess Meng Po, who wipes the memories of the dead in preparation for their reincarnation with her special soup.

oh my god I'm so stupid, Deerlee's new gem isn't a star
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT'S A FUCKING TREE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s evidence from link titles and image names on Moose Toys website that Unia was once named Celeste during production, which tracks with her star forehead gem. Along the same lines, there’s that one Youloveit link that names Catlyn as Starla, which again matches her eight-pointed star gem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The new Unia has a tear drop shaped gem that she shares with her unicorn Pegasus pet/friend, which tracks with all the redesigned characters getting new gem shapes. I’m really interested in the new Deerlee seeming to have the same star shape as Catlyn. It’s a very blurry image so it could turn out to be something else, but it looks very similar. It’s interesting they would reuse a gem like this again, as before the original Deerlee and Faye had the same flower shaped gem, while the new Faye has changed to a crystal shape. Must Deerlee always share a design? I really can’t wait for stock photos of Deerlee 2.0, especially since we now have Nebula and Firensa stock photos.

From the Kayla X “Legendary Spirits” blind box figure collection:
Her name is Mirage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My first thought when I saw her was of Princess Tamatori, or Tamatori-hime, who stole a pearl from the sea god and escaped him and his minions by cutting open her chest and hiding the pearl inside, which ultimately lead to her death.
However after having the figure in hand and noticing her tear, and doing a bit of searching, I believe she's actually a depiction of the myth of mermaid's tears. I couldn't find any reputable sources for the myth, beyond jewelry websites. The best source I found was this, from the description of artist's Sasha Katz's work based on the tale, (the image wouldn't load for me, so I can't comment on the art itself) from superrare.com
Tumblr media
If you just google mermaid's tears, you'll find more places describing sea glass as the tears. Again, it's mainly jewelry websites trying to sell you pearls that reference this supposed myth. Presumably Roman in origin, given the appearance of Neptune. There's this slightly more detailed summary from capecodchokers.com
Tumblr media
Here's the myth delivered with more purple, but this time with sea glass as the eponymous tears, from bohosilver.co.uk
Tumblr media
I could go on, but I think I've pretty much hit the bottom of the well for sources on this supposed myth. In my opinion it's far more likely a modern creation for the purpose of selling pearls, or sea glass. There's a book from 2009 titled "Tears of Mermaids: The Secret Story of Pearls" by Stephen G. Bloom about the economic, political, and cultural history of the global pearl trade, which notably uses the myth as a title, but as far as I could tell from searches on Google Books, does not actually reference the myth anywhere in the text. It does look interesting though.
So that's the origin of Mirage, as far as I can tell. Her pearl in the right hand and tear from her right eye tell the story of how she fell in love with a sailor, and was banished to the bottom of the sea by Neptune to weep pearls for the rest of eternity. And she doesn't look too pleased about it!

I miss Zombaes Forever so much.
My first was She’s Shady last July after having seen those coffin-shaped boxes in the doll aisle for a while. Cringily, my first thought the first time I saw them was “pah, Monster High ripoff”.
Not everything spooky-themed is a MH ripoff, 9-months-ago me.
Anyway! Funnily enough, I’m almost positive that box had been opened in store and put back. Her sticker sheet was missing and she was out of her little paper body bag already. She still had her character card though, and she was so cute!
Tumblr media
Then a few days later I went back. The first series was running out of stock at the only two Targets I went to back then, so I picked up three of the second series instead. ✨ Wild Vibes ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I opened them in my car because I was pumped. It’s so funny I got the three beach themed ones all at once! She’s Got Bite was the first I opened, and still feels special. Her cracked goggles, little swim trunks, and one-eyed shark are great examples of the absolute best of Zombaes.
I picked up the rest of Wild Vibes over time, with liberal use of the codes. I never got the rare ‘Spacing Out’ though, which I’m still bummed about. I would go into Target very frequently to check, and anytime there was a So Chill (the one who had the same code as her), the box would be roughly open and rifled through. People really have no shame, though it definitely is frustrating that I ended up with multiple So Chill’s myself from all that searching 😅.
When I finally found a good Walmart in my area and started shopping there too a couple months later, I found they somehow still had a few boxes of series 1, so I ended up getting a Miss Everlasting and a Rock in Peace.
Tumblr media
(I had to rubberband Shady’s parasol to her hand because she kept dropping it, as you can kind of see here)
It’s such a shame that this line seems to have been quietly canceled. I have the pet shop set and the bride-and-groom set now as well, and I hope to eventually get the other sets too as they lower in price. But there is such potential for more in these guys! They’re all so bursting with creativity and incredibly clever and cute designs. The art is so good, the collectible cards and little stands and coffin box, the little paper body bags you unwrap them from! They’re my spooky little zombie Polly Pockets, and Spinmaster can pry them from my cold undead hands.
And honestly, with Wild Vibes especially, the price was pretty good too. $9, and then $7, for all of that?? The big sets aren’t even expensive! Though maybe that was the problem in the end, along with people cannibalizing the displays as I saw all the time.
I did email Spinmaster’s media relations about a month ago to ask for any info they could give out, even though it’s a long shot, and I’ve not received a reply. In the unlikely event that ever changes I’ll update this post I suppose, but at this point I’m sadly considering these girls as dead in the water. It’s a tragic cancellation, but I’m really glad I got into the hobby just in time to experience them. And I absolutely love all of the ones we got. 💕

Pixlings character artwork
(for the life of me I could not find any actual art of Wynter, the closest is the photo on the front of her packaging that I am 96% certain is just a stock photo Photoshopped to smooth out the elbow joints and make the skirt ruffly, but the more I look at it the more I second guess myself)
all images taken/cropped from stock photos from youloveit and the Moose Toys website

I was thinking about what animal/creature Firensa might be, and at this point I'm really thinking she's a boar, or some other kind of pig. Her little mixling pet has a pig snout, her ears match with a pig's, and the little curls on the side of her skirt are reminiscent of a pig's curly tail. The fiery theme is a bit of a question mark, but she could be a reference to war pigs, and the story of how ancient Greeks and Romans would supposedly tar and set fire to pigs and have them charge at an opposing army's line of elephants to make them flee and trample the opposing forces. A little dark for a Pixling, but that's the only connection to flames and pigs I could think of.
