Spine-tingling quotes from classic & modern horror authors
Tumblr media
Here are some of the best spine-tingling quotes from classic and modern horror authors, curated by the Viewax review team.
“By looking at the world through a supernatural prism I can step back from my own real-life fears of loss and death, and make them feel a little bit safer when I write stories with characters who are facing things that I’ll never have to face.” —Tananarive Due
“We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.” —Stephen King
“Horror fiction shows us that the control we believe we have is purely illusory, and that every moment we teeter on chaos and oblivion.” —Clive Barker
Tumblr media
“The way that people feel changes everything. Feelings are forces. They cause us to time travel. And to leave ourselves, to leave our bodies. I would be that kind of psychologist who says, ‘You’re absolutely right – there are monsters under the bed.'” —Helen Oyeyemi
“I think that’s part of the horror writer’s job: to create unsettling juxtapositions. You find something that seems harmless and innocent, and pair it with aspects that are disturbing.” —Joe Hill
“What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.”—Mary Shelley
“The best monsters are our anxieties given form. They make sense on the level of a dream – or a nightmare.” —Victor LaValle
Tumblr media
“The way humor’s usually used in horror, it’s as a pressure-release valve; without it, the drama would escalate out of all control almost immediately.” —Stephen Graham Jones
“How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams.” —Bram Stoker

Horror remakes which got it just right
Tumblr media
Hollywood may have churned out some chilling horror movies over the years, but what you may not know is that some of your favorites started in another language.
Some of the best-loved horror movies of the last few decades have been remakes of foreign language originals; here are few that got it right.
Let Me In
The novel Let the Right One by John Ajvide Lindqvist had already been adapted into a Swedish movie of the same name in 2008. It was directed by Thomas Alfredson and received substantial critical acclaim.
The story deals with adolescent vampires and earned praise for its originality and powerful storytelling. In 2010, an English language remake, Let Me In, was released. It starred Chole Grace Moretz and although many loyal fans preferred the original Swedish version, Let Me In also received positive reviews.
Tumblr media
The Ring
The 2002 creepy flick about the cursed videotape and the mysterious long-haired girl climbing out of the well certainly gave audiences the chills. Starring Naomi Watts and Brian Cox, The Ring proved a hit with horror fans and spawned several sequels.
However, The movie itself was a remake of a classic Japanese Ringu, released in 1998. The consensus that the director Gore Verbinski had done an excellent job helming the English language remake, but horror fans still acclaim the original Japanese masterpiece.
Tumblr media
The Grudge
Another remake of a Japanese classic. The 2000 movie Ju-On was so well received that the original director Takashi Shimizu was hired by the studio to make the 2004 English language remake. The result was a hit, due in no small part to Shimizu and the casting of the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Four frightening facts about The Turn of the Screw
Tumblr media
Henry James’s 19th century novella The Turn of the Screw is considered a classic of horror literature. It was most recently the inspiration for the 2020 movie the The Turning, produced by Steven Spielberg. Here are some interesting facts about The Turn of the Screw you may not know.
1. The book by Henry James was published in 1898 and based in the late 19th century. The film adaptation, though, has been brought up to date, but not to right up to modern day. Director Floria Sigismondi said she wanted to set The Turning in the 1990s. This way she could give it a modern twist, but didn’t want to complicated matters by basing it in the 21st century where characters would be able to use mobile phones and the internet.
Tumblr media
2. One of the movie’s stars is no stranger to horror and the supernatural. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Finn, has previously appeared in the remake of It as well as Netflix hit Stranger Things.
3. There have been previous attempts by Spielberg to adapt the Henry James novel for the screen. It was originally developed as a movie called Haunted and was to be directed by Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. However, the Dreamworks studio pulled the plug about a month before filming. Spielberg is also behind this latest version, having hired Sigismondi through his Amblin Entertainment company.
Tumblr media
4. The first adaptation of the novella was as an opera by British composer Benjamin Britten in 1954. It has also inspired a ballet and a number of stage plays. There have been several film adaptations, the first being the 1961 movie The Innocents while the TV series The Haunting of Bly Manor also takes its inspiration from The Turn of the Screw.

What to Look For in Your Next eBook Reader
Tumblr media
For those that love to read, one invention has made life a lot easier and saved space - the ebook reader. Now, you can have many books all on one device so you can take your ebook reader anywhere you want and read several books at the same time. If you are new to the ebook reader market, here are some tips to help you find the right one.
Backlit Screen
Early readers didn’t have any backlighting, so reading at night meant having a light nearby. While this is ok if you are at home, when traveling, you might not always have access to light. Newer reader models now come with a backlight that also won’t strain your eyes.
Tumblr media
Battery Life
Readers have a good record for having long battery life, but this can vary depending on the manufacturer. If you read a lot, you might want to find a reader that has the longest battery life you can without losing any functionality.
Case and Screen Protector
Because your reader will likely spend a lot of time in your bag, you need to think about getting a case that will protect it. Some models come with a case, but check to see if it will be suitable. A good screen protector will also help to prevent scratches on the screen that could become annoying.
Tumblr media
Libraries
More libraries are now offering digital copies of their books for people to lend. These books are usually available in ePub or PDF so may not be compatible with Kindles.
To find out which ebooks are available, why not check out www.viewax.com.

New Technology Trends You Need in 2021
Tumblr media
Technology is always moving forward, which means there are always new gadgets on the horizon. Not all of this technology is going to be in the home either, some of it will change the way you do things in everyday life. Here are new technology trends you will need in 2021.
5G
Regardless of what you may think about 5G, it will eventually be rolled out nationwide. The good thing about 5G is that it will give you far more speed in your load times so watching movies or YouTube will be fast. Newer phones are now coming equipped with the new 5G technology, so be prepared for lightning-fast mobile data.
Tumblr media
Mixed Reality
There have already been big advances in virtual reality and augmented reality, but mixed reality will combine both of these. The benefit of having these two concepts together is they can help with dangerous or potentially serious situations where you don’t want people to go.
Automation
Although many things are now automated, this will increase in the coming years. Companies such as Amazon are already taking advantage of automated deliveries, and this will likely increase. There may also be strides towards autonomous cars very shortly which will make driving a whole different experience.
Tumblr media
Smart Gadgets
There are already many of these around but be prepared for even more things to become smarter in 2021. These could include shoes that track your activity, lightbulbs that learn your routine, and smart doors that can hold parcels and be more secure.
