How did Joan and Whitney meet?
See, I know what brings them together in Salmon Road (it has to do with Clementine)
But, their first meeting actually happened prior to the start of the story. The details of what this encounter was… I am still figuring out.
I can tell you what I know so far though (keep reading below)
•Their social bubbles rarely overlapped growing up for many reasons (the biggest being Whitney was homeschooled + preferred solitude)
•Joan’s reputation in town as a troublemaker precedes her; ever since Whitney caught wind of it she’s been casually avoidant of personal association
•Even as adults, they do not really cross paths because Whitney is far more integrated into the local community in a way that Joan is not and Whitney depends on those connections to keep herself afloat
•Whenever they do encounter each other at Whitney’s workplace, Whitney is one of the few employees that will offer to “handle her” because Whitney thinks her co-workers’ attitudes about it are straight up childish
•It’s not personal, until the start of Salmon Road Whitney barely knows Joan other than what she’s heard from other people or observed in short bursts
•Joan could say they’re acquaintances but that's a stretch, I don't think Joan even remembers Whitney's name right away when they meet again in the story but Whitney knows Joan's name a little too well

Are any of your ocs chefs/what are their fav foods??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My character Caden's whole deal is being a chef (in a soft sci-fi setting)
Culinary arts is their passion. Or at least they want it to be, Caden was pushed into the sciences in order to become a space cadet like their parents. They work in food/supply delivery between stations in our local solar system due to their fear of deep space travel.
As for favorite foods, Caden loves diner food! It gives them Earth nostalgia and a break from having to cook everything themself.

What made Ms.Tulip want to become a teacher? :)
Tulip was inspired to become a teacher herself thanks to the teachers she had growing up. As a child she loved school because it was really one of the few places she would feel acknowledged and encouraged by the people around her.
Tumblr media
As a teacher in Bluegill, Tulip wants to pass along what she was fortunate to receive. And she believes every kid she educates should feel seen and heard! She understands the feeling of being left out and overlooked and wouldn’t wish it on anybody.

What do you have an easier time with when writing for your ocs? Story, descriptions, or something else entirely?
Also, do the bears in Salmon Road world hibernate?
Characterization is probably the easiest for me, writing descriptions and plotting are still a major challenge area. But I’m always learning.
And to answer your second question: Kind of! (worldbuilding under the cut)
In my anthroverse, hibernation is a leftover evolutionary thing that serves no purpose anymore. They do not actually partake in full hibernation but, for species who would hibernate, their bodies and habits are affected by the change in seasons.
It’s biological but it is also cultural.
There is the lethargy, metabolism slowing and overall urge to sleep more. Some may also experience Seasonal Rythmia, which is when their system and heartbeat naturally slows during cold weather/winter. May cause a drop in energy levels, mild body fatigue, dizziness/drowsiness and disorientation/lack of focus. Not harmful or fatal on its own and quite common for Bears to experience throughout winter.
How much Hibernation Season is taken into account will vary on location. Cities are WAY more bustling and active throughout that time compared to smaller, more self-contained towns like Bluegill Springs (main setting of the story).
Small businesses may observe Hibernation Hours which means they close earlier than normal or their scheduling + staffing is adjusted to accommodate those affected.
It’s a rough winter for the animals that work full-time and don’t compensate with coffee, caffeine supplements or energy drinks.
Culturally, hibernation can be a big deal for Bears since they tend to have small and scattered family units.
If you celebrate, Hibernation Season marks a period of gatherings meant to symbolize getting all your energy out (good and bad) from the year and eating your full with family and community before winter comes and puts everyone to rest until spring. Sometimes these celebrations are the only times multiple units of a Bear family will gather at all and they use it as communal catch up time.
These celebrations do not take place during the winter,  they happen around mid-late autumn.
Goes without saying though, not all families have the same practices or dynamics so whether you actually participate in the festivities or not really depends on your personal/your family’s relationship to the tradition.

Are the stories about your OCs available to read somewhere or are they just for you?
I have been considering getting into creating zines and mini comics as a way to get started again but for now I am still in the process of developing/updating my stories
You can find all my OC posts under #ocs (artwork) and #oc info (text posts/q&as)
My storyworlds also have their own specific tags if you want to filter out certain characters (ex. salmon road)

For the OC questions: Could you tell me a little more about Whitney and Clementine? I thiiink they're sisters but is Whitney her guardian?
Of course, it's been a while so let me rehash some information about them:
Tumblr media
-They are sisters! At the start of Salmon Road, Whitney is around 28 yrs old and Clementine is 10 yrs old. Their age gap is bigger so people tend to mistaken Clementine as Whitney's daughter.
-Whitney becomes Clementine's guardian, but that was not always the case. There was a sudden death in the family that left Clementine without anyone else to care for her. Whitney was the last remaining family member who was eligible (and willing), so, Clementine's move to Bluegill Springs and her entrance into Whitney's life again was unexpected.
-They have been estranged since Clementine was a baby. Whitney left home to live with their Grandfather and Clementine was raised by their Aunt. She knows Whitney exists, but they don't exactly have an established relationship when they begin to live together due to Whitney's absence in her life thus far. They were not born into a tight knit family. It is something they have to figure out together due to circumstance.

Does Whitney give good hugs?
I would say she is an awkward hugger—stand offish about being touched by most, especially by strangers. Giving hugs is not something she is often inclined to do. She’s more likely to pat you on the shoulder/back (she often pats Clementine on the head)
When she does fully embrace, however, I am sure it feels quite powerful and certain. She’s only really giving those kind of hugs to the people she cares most about keeping close to her chest.
