One-Esk, Murderbot, and A.R.T. watch "2001 a Space Odyssey - The Musical"
Tumblr media
Meanwhile...
Tumblr media
Creator’s Note: I made some more incredibly niche crossover content! Three of my favorite fictional robots/AI hanging out. This scene popped into my head when I was rereading the scene in artificial condition where ART was afraid to watch certain shows with secunit because it would get too upset if the ship cremembers in the show were endangered. (Probably the cutest moment in the whole series TBH, and definitely the moment I became 1000% on board with ART as a character.) I had a lot of fun imagining the characters reactions and trying to pick out what they should watch for their pajama movie night (obviously it had to be a musical for breq, and include space ships for ART). Hope you enjoy!
Also, here's a text-free version of my drawing, which you are welcome to use/edit/draw-over however you'd like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Post script: if you like Martha Wells Murderbot Diaries, you should definitely check out Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice trilogy, or vice versa. More angry traumatized non-binary human-ai constructs for all! Mega-latestage-capitolist dystopia, or xenophobic -imperialist-socialist empire? Sentient space ships? C’mon. Just read both series u know you’ll love it.

A rough sketch of a scene that popped into my head. It made me smile, but I don't think I'm gonna finish it past this point. If anybody likes this scene you're welcome to draw it in your own style? I don't know if that's a thing people do. I think people adopt other people's characters sometimes but I don't know if it applies to whole art pieces. I think its called adopts?

AEOLUS - animation
Aeolus canonically is the son of Poseidon and is classically depicted as a bearded old man, so in epic the musical:
Personally I think it is very true to Aeolus' whimsical trickster character for him to have chosen for himself the appearance of an old man but the beautiful fluting voice of a fairy, just to fuck with people. I was so charmed by the idea I had to animate it to see how it fit. We love a gender nonconforming character here.
Also look at these cool stature pictures I found when trying to find references for an Aeolus design early on. (Current design is kinda unrecognizable but I still really dig these statues). Aren't they fun?? He looks so grumpy and impish and also like a cherub that somehow grew up to achieve gangly teen-hood and balding middle-age all at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A cursory reverse google image search says they might be: "18th century terracotta statue of the wind god Aeolus with a leather bag on his head, held in the Städtische Galerie-Liebighaus, Museum alter Plastik, Frankfurt"
Aeolus also seems to be the face of all the bearded old men blowing clouds in the margins of old maps.

100% agree with what your saying @catgirlapologist , especially on bullet point #2). I work in an ER where we sometimes see patients with schizophrenia who are experiencing severe psychotic episodes. I think these people are some of our most vulnerable patients we have, especially if they are coming in alone, without a trusted loved one to help advocate for them (while full of lots of good, kind, caring people the healthcare system fails people all the time, especially when your ability to voice concerns is impaired or considered unreliable). I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to have schizophrenia and be in an abuse situation where the people who should be your greatest support instead do not have your best interests at heart.
Additionally, while we only sometimes get schizophrenic patients with psychosis in the ER, we pretty much daily get patients with drug-induced psychosis (usually meth in my area). While our schizophrenic patients tend not to be aggressive, aggression is frequently a component of drug-induced psychosis, especially if the patient is being brought in by the cops and is already worked up from that. (Cops are terrible deescalators). Almost every er nurse or tech I know that’s been working there for a while has a story about being threatened or attacked by a patient. And sadly, because there is sometimes not a lot of distinction made between different patients we have coming in with psychosis, or other AMS, I think care terms are more predisposed to be guarded and distrustful to our patients coming in out of touch with reality. While I’ve never seen patient abuse in my hospital, I 100% believe that schizophrenic patients could be more likely to receive abuse and definitely would have a harder time getting help or being believed.
Also, if I said anything wrong here I do apologize, I am just a Tech and not very deeply educated about schizophrenia. I am always trying to learn more to better help the different patients might be taking care of though. If anyone reading this has been to the ER with schizophrenia I would love to hear about the experience and especially if there were things you wish staff had done differently. The only schizophrenic people I have gotten to talk to were very out of touch with reality at the time, and the I never see them again, or hear their thoughts on the experience after the fact.
isn’t it insane though how schizophrenic people are viewed as violent and dangerous by the majority of society when in reality schizophrenic people are nearly 14 times more likely to be on the receiving end of violence than to be the perpetrators…

Omg it does! I love this empathetic therapist Polyphemus. Very cute🤭. I love it! Thank you @madrone33 !
My Happy Wholesome Odyssey AU
Traumatized war vet Odysseus discovers the healing joy of therapy animals and lonely Polyphemus makes his first human friend.
Tumblr media
I bet Odysseus would really enjoy sheep as therapy animals since he had lots of goats in Ithaca. Probably reminds him of home.
Tumblr media
not 100% sure i'm using the term AU right but we're gonna go for it. Do you have to write a fic for it to be an AU? cuz thats never gonna happen, but I've been enjoying imagining scenes in a world where events in the odyssey shook out a little differently and the friendships that could have been if people were allowed to be kind and coexist.

VORKOSIGAN SAGA- I found the most Enrique-core video.
youtube
I love this enthusiastic bug man. Very reminiscent of Enrique Borgos. But also I enjoyed this video just because I think bugs are fascinating and I love watching people be HUGE NERDS about things they love and are excited about.
Video is perfect at x2 speed
Word of the day: Pullulating
“Even before the design modifications, it had been unjust of Miles to dub the earlier, original version ‘the vomit bugs’, or, during the unfortunate time they’d escaped inside Vorkosigan House, ‘those damned pullulating cockroaches’.”
Bujold has some phenomenal word choice her prose is so evocative and fun to read 🤭 “those damned pullulating cockroaches!” from just a few words such a vivid picture is painted of the nastiness of the bug bodies (I imagine giant bloated termites) as well as Miles’s dramatic disgust and outrage.

The Blind Man and the Donkey
Tumblr media
While visiting friends in DC last New-Years I met someone who told me a story
It was about a man who had been born blind, but one day, for just a single second, he was able to see. And in that second the thing he glimpsed was a donkey. Thereafter any time anyone described something they had seen, the blind man would ask if “it was as beautiful as a donkey?”
Well, the person I met told the story a lot better than I just did. I thought it was a really beautiful. I asked if I could draw his story. It turned out he had a lot of other fables and we talked about creating a project together. Later that week I left DC for home and immediately did a very depressed-person-with-ADHD thing and just never got in touch. I felt very bad about that. Yesterday my story acquaintance reached out of the blue to wish me a happy New Years, and I finally sent them this one tiny illustration. I don’t know if we’ll ever wind up making this project together but I hope someday he can publish a book of his lovely stories from home.

I love your animations so much! I know you're a beginner, but they look so advanced, and the "scribbliness" you described genuinely adds to your animations in my opinion. Do you have any tips? If not, that's fine! I really just wanted to say I'm impressed, especially for a first animation!
Awwwe thank you! I’m really happy that you like my animations 🥰. I feel incredibly underqualified to give animating tips cuz like I’m at a stage where I’m still learning how to keyframe, and use multiple layers(? I think I’m doing it currently in an insane way that can’t possibly be right, but tutorials are incredibly boring)
I don’t know if any of this is useful or interesting to you but I like to ramble so here ya go:
For the two little animations I did, I used the gouache brush in CSP to make all my lines and then a separate layer with a paper texture image set on multiply.
The third longer animation/animatic thing was pieced together shots from a comic I drew awhile ago. It’s a bit of a WIP as I am working on redrawing so my characters can move around separate from the backgrounds.
Again thank you for saying these lovely kind things. Your words made me smile!

Count Vortala and Lord Midnight
Tumblr media
This painting is actually “A Dear Visitor” by Max Kurzweil, 1984
I saw it and was instantly seized by how perfectly it fits the Barrayaran historical anecdote of the horse Lord Midnight. 🤭

Tiny Gouache Studies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Been trying my hand at doing master studies with gouache, and i think they turned out pretty well!
Reference images here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hand is a study from a Denis Sarazhin painting and the foot is from a J.C. Leyendecker. (Probably. I found these cropped images on Pinterest so I am not 100% sure.)
.LEYENDECKER
The first J.C. Leyendecker image I came across was captioned “finding poetry in realism” and I think that is a very apt way to describe his paintings. Distinct shapes, vibrant colors, and often playful poses make his pieces feel slightly “more” than life, - the tinniest bit cartoonish- yet still elegant? Idk I’ve been finding them very fun to study and I feel like I’m learning more about light and color when I try to recreate them. Here are some examples of Leyendecker:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.SARAZHIN
I adore Denis Sarazhin‘a oilpaintings. I love the raw motion in so many of his paintings and the way he paints anatomy. His hands are always so scrungly and expressive! And the color! I feel like there’s often these stark very dark or bone white backgrounds paired with the subject in these vibrant almost pastel colors that make the people he paints look like they are glowing from within. I love them so much I can’t describe the feeling they sometimes give me deep down in my skull. Frozen awe but wide awake as if doused by and ice bucket and absolutely buzzing with energy? Beautiful art. Surreal, powerful, breathtaking!
Here are some examples of Sarazhin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just can’t show enough photos to capture his full range but you should really do a google and treat yourself to all the pretty pictures. I’ve gotta stop thinking about Sarazhin now or I’ll take to much psychic damage and explode.
Thanks for reading!

Byerly Vorrutyer visiting Ivan’s apartment’s
Tumblr media
I adore these two character’s interactions 🤭
Creation notes:
- finished the linework and got really worried I’d fuck it up when I painted it so I made a photocopy and painted that instead of the original copy which was drawn on watercolor paper… unfortunately printer paper is not the greatest paint absorber so apologies for the lumpiness.
- also idk I messed up drawing byerly’s outfit. The shirts details are pretty but a little off from what I was going for and somehow during painting the pants now look like harem pants. (Outfit was supposed to be an attempt at a barrayaran folk-style suit/vest with a cut blending early 1800s suit silhouettes with open sleeve folk shirts. It didn’t quite work out.)
Here’s linework and a bonus doodle of instant groats:
Tumblr media
Examples of the Greek folk bolero’s I was going for :
Similar shaped jackets exist in Albanian / Bosnian / ottoman folk styles

Barrayaran Uniforms
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My laptop’s still broken so it’s been a messing-around-with-gouache-paint weekend! I always draw too small so doing the deatails on this one was rough! 😫
Modern imperial dress greens on the left, and an attempt at vorkosigan house livery on the right (I don’t love how the vorkosigan house one turned out so I’m probably gonna rework it some more before adding anything to the ol’ headcannon)
NOTES ON IMPERIAL DRESS GREENS
-book mentions stiff high uncomfortable collars, forest green color, riding boots and side piping. There should also be two ceremonial swords but I got lazy
- I wanted to put an emphasis on embroidery and hand details in barrayaran fashion in general so I picked side piping a little more intricate and ornate than just a simple stripe
- originally I was put piping across the front like in the reference, but it got too busy and I wanted the chest to be a little simpler that way medals and other stuff would stand out better against the fabric. Plus having fewer fiddly bits helps it feel more sleek and less out of place in space.
Reference photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
UNIFORM OVER TIME
- Barrayar as a setting has had to basically speedrun 600 years of fashion history as they make the leap from midieval to space-age in a single generation. In order to show the shift in eras I made a little timeline(ish) of the general changes in the uniform silhouette.
- biggest change in the general silhouette is the gradual shortening of the coat/shirt element from calf lengths tabards to thigh length coats to to waist height jackets
- armor and chainmail fall by the wayside, and guns are picked up. Early occupation uniforms eclectic and a hodgepodge of old midieval weaponry + stolen cetegandan ordenance. They are not uniform at all as the barrayaran military is mostly small gorilla outfits with each fighting force cobbled together from the resources at hand. New Uniformity would come with the return of central government and the implementation of infrastructure for mass production. The uniform would probably stay relatively consistant during the conquest of komarr through the pretendership. Another major shift in in uniform style would probably occur during the regency or Gregor’s coronation in reflection of the successful regime change and the continued push towards a more modern barrayar
Here’s some rough outlines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reference Collages from photocopies of a fashion history book I picked up from the library a while back. Don’t remember the title. Will edit post when I do Left is Russia (not sure which century). Right is references for occupation fighters pulled from various pages, time periods, and nationalities (Russia, Mongolia, Crete and turkey maybe? Idk) I wrote all the page numbers down on the collage but I returned the book so now they’re useless.
Thanks for reading!

I accidentally stepped on my laptop last week and now it won’t turn on 😭😭😭. Hopefully I can get it repaired at best buy or at least salvage some of my art files. Unfortunately I procrastinate pretty bad when it comes to getting shit fixed so realistically I probably won’t get around to sorting out laptop stuff till after finals and break. All digital art projects are on pause until then :(
In the meantime here’s a little doodle of Thetis:

EDIT
11/14 update! 5 more hours in and I've now mostly finished 2.5 out of 6 pannels for this short! yaaaayyyy
Here it is:
Tumblr media
also- when chronicling progress on a large art project like this is it better to keep editing the same post or post separately each time? (new posts each time seemed like it would be kinda spammy so I didn't?) Or is this a thing where you reblog your own post? Is that a thing? I don't really understand under what contexts a person should reblog their own content, but it does appear to be a thing that Tumblr would let me do.
