Hellooooo, I wanted to ask: Is there any Barbera related trivia you would like to share but will never get a chance to within the comic? She's my favorite and I'd always like to know more about her! Also I remember you mentioning that you have ideas for what the characters voices would sound like if they were say animated or live-action, do you have any voice actors/actors you'd cast?

Hey Anonym! Oh boy, I kept thinking about this question for a while. So. Barbera is the unfiltered asshole some might fantasize about letting lose when really frustrated. She's definitely a power fantasy for me (as are all of them.) Jaune has the same impulsive monstrosity about her, when pushed to the brim. But Jaune still does believe in people and wants to be accepted an have friends and feel welcome somewhere. I imagine Barbera to sound... raspy and smokey and hag-ery with a cat twang. That's very scientific. Sorry, I do not have specific voice actors in mind. The voice actor with the best cackle who can also sound very menacing and dark. Maybe Wendie Malick (who spoke Eda from Owl House) She is the It running wild, zero fucks to give. I'd appreciate she being spoken by a nonbinary voice actor. But to be very honest... I had to look up the names i'll be naming here. I don't know many voice actors. In the beginning I had this main idea about her, that she gets insanely obsessive about a certain question and will not stop at anything to solve it. And that her main motivator for following the lady was the lady having answers. Barbera is utterly disconnected from technology. The version I had in mind in the beginning would have had her head explode by wikipedia. Then again - she would go down the rabbit holes and lose her mind at insatisfactory sources. The many years of being left to her own devices degenerated her more. She never adjusted. She'd always be an asshole. Including as a kid. Her parents are neglectful scientists, who are disliked bei their peers but brilliant. She was a strange accident and raised herself. And very happy with that. I think in a nurturing environment, she'd still not be social at all, but she might not let the It run wild indiscriminately and would have turned out a fine mathematician some day. Coming home to an unfurnished block apartment and eating the same everyday. Probably toast and Nutella. And gluing razor blades to the playground, because those damn kids are too loud. One of the reasons for drawing twisted was wanting to draw splatter. I do not like violence in reality at all. I also don't like mindless violence. Barbera lets me draw this in droves. She doesn't need a reason. But it's more satisfying if there IS a reason. She's also too brutal to 'enjoy' her oevres. The Lady could let somebody life for years. Barbera's people don't survive more than 10 minutes. Gabriel... doesn't even realize that she's sometimes killing people. Jaune does not enjoy the suffering of others, but she seeks control over her own emotions by putting all the blame on others (which usually is warranted). But she's also always been jealous and 100% depended on what other thought of her. There are many snippets that will probably not make it into the comic. There is one where she convinces Gabriel, that the incinerator in the cellar needs regular feeding or it'll turn against them. There is also one where Gabriel invites her whole therapy group into the secret head quarters and Barbera REALLY enjoys having so many people at home who will definitely not be leaving again. For the other characters the voice actors... The Lady should be somebody who can sound soultry and seductive and very cold. I recently got goosebumbs with the Voice Acress who voices Lillith in Diablo 4 (Caroline Faber) and I also really, really like the narrator of Baldurs Gate 3 (Amelia Tyler). Voice actors are so incredibly versatile - I am sure many could pull that off. Jaune als has that cracking in her voice - as if a bit hoarse from laughing too much. She should sound giddy and young (but not like a child). I've heard the manner of speaking called "Valley Girl" sometimes, but I am not sure, if that's the correct term. Maybe Grey Griffin (Azula). Gabriel is no nonsense with German accent. I'd appreciate a German voice actor. I appreciate the questions a lot! Thank you!

I know it's dumb and It's probably obvious but Is Gabriel a Girl? because my first Language is not English and Gabriel is a Male name in my country, everything they refer to them as Gabriel I get so confused and I think they are a girl but I just wan to be sure. Thanks!

Hey Anonym! thanks for asking! The short answer: Gabriel is AFAB and when I created the character, I honestly thought, “Gabriel” was a unisex name. Longer answer: I thought the name was unisex, because if you pronounce the female French name ‘Gabrielle’ it sounds like the German ‘Gabriel’, which is male. For some reason this made sense to my “I just started learning French”-brain. In 1999 I chose the name ‘Gabriel’ to hide behind online. I did not have good experiences if people knew i was a teenage girl and i also did not feel comfortable as a girl in general. I had a hard time identifying as a girl. This is not the case anymore. When I drew comics of my experiences as an exchange student (01/02) in the US, I created the first version of the TwistEd-Gabriel. These comics lasted maybe... 2 strips and then went off the rails and ran into TwistEd-Territory. The core story of TwistEd is from about 2006, when I still wasn’t educated on genderqueer people. TwistEd-Gabriel has the privilege to not care about being correctly gendered. If she had to fill out a form, she’d put down “female”. She’s asexual and connects to other people via her missions. I can see her in a happy relationship with a person that shares her obsessions. I understand Barbera as a character that could be played or voiced by any gender. I am considering at one point going back and editing the comic with more sensitivity towards gender. The comic displays some ignorance that i am pretty embarrassed about. Nowadays I see Barbera as a nonbinary character, that would use she/they pronouns and doesn’t mind Gabriel calling her “it” when Gabriel is in delusional-i-see-people-as-monsters-mode, since being a monster is pretty empowering to Barbera.

Hey! thanks for reading twistEd : )TwistEd is written in English and the voices of the characters are closer to what I have in mind. Its also set in an English speaking country (though this is not really important to the story). Many of the chapters are line corrected by a native English speaking editor (but i tend to do last minute changes… sorry to the editor).That being said - i am not a native English speaker so sometimes the wording might be a bit off or clunky. This is only sometimes intended for one of the characters, who also isn’t native. In short: English is the “closer” version to what I envision but it is a second language to me, so it might sound unintentionally awkward at times. I also appreciate being told of typos or other mistakes.I hope you’ll enjoy living in this world for a short time. Well. Not “enjoy”, but having an… interesting experience!gab

One Thing i want to improve on the buttons i did for my comic is… A unified color scheme. The current buttons are all color coded for the respective character. Looks a bit bubble gummy on the lapel. Can’t have that as certified edgy fellow kid. Weird how not guilty i feel about this and it makes me so happy. Those two characters will not be in such a loving situation. Ever. If something should happen between them, it’ll not be tender. Have not decided yet, if i leave that chapter in (leaning strongly to not show sexual content between the characters, because it is not important to the story and doesn’t serve any purpose within the plot. It’s fanservice with me as the fan : D ) that picture is tame - the uncropped one (for patreons) has a bit more skin contact, buuuut i don’t want to lure people for nsfw content to the comic’s patreon (it wouldn#t be worth it!) - i just feel more comfortable being able to sort of restrict, who can see more explicit images. Especially if they’re not canon. So much talk for such a simple lineart. ref used

I am still getting red and teary eyed and grinny … and I will for quite some time : D Look, who said HI on the leipzig bookfair to me. @das_clownteil came as Barbera from my webcomic TwistEd. And she would have brought another main character, but sadly that cosplayer went to the hospital. That is beyond awesome. If they’d both been there, i’d probably lost it completely. Now, it just gave me the grins for hours and hours : )

Everything - the lightning bolt scars, that creative bag (borrowed from an awesome artist, who cosplayed as Summer from the apocalypse world season 3 in rick and morty - so she had a stomach-bag! it looked so squishy and disgusting - perfect!), the boots and… keeping this a secret for months! HOW!

Also i learnt that aparently my character can’t see, since that combination of glasses and mouthpiece clouds the glasses constantly. Well… Ups. eh. um. it was established, that barbera is not human (by the character that just sees half the population as humans - totally realiable judgement),

Sorry for this babbly comment, i just don’t know where to start and where to end with my happiness and enthusiasm about this giant honor. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I aquired a piece of the cosplay (clownteil wrapped a present with it) and this now is part of my twisted board right above the workstation.

I tested if i could offer convention drawings i’d be satisfied to sell. The materials worked out. the time didn’t. I needed 1hr and 40 minutes. I basically had all the black areas down and some of the grey when the 1hour mark hit. not enough to feel comfortable.

Fellow artists, how do you deal with that. On a convention you’re probably busy with managing the booth and talking to people - do you just take one or two books or none at all? Do you put the pen down after a certain time? Do you have go-to-motifs you’re simply really quick with?

I got some helpful answers already, but am always open to more suggestions.

my indepth market research lead to the conclusion, that this little leaflet will only be a very small homemade edition. If you want one, tell me now via pn or comment and I’ll have one ready for you on the lbm. If you’re not at the Leipzig Bookfair, I can send these after the fair. I will not have the booklets visible at the booth, you need to ask for them, since they’re straight up porn. Well. Not straight.

The little booklet is about the size of an ancient CD booklet, 2 or 3 color illustrations, 19-20 black/grey/white. 16 pages. Explicit sexual content, consensual, very light bondage and dominance. One is 3,50 (+ Shipping if you’re not at the LBM. which is 90c in Germany, 1,50 outside of Germany). Only if you’re older than 18, sorry. THE LAW.

I enjoy seeing well made erotic art by other people and would enjoy drawing my own - even if its just for me. That will never be my focus and soon again, you’ll get the old violence, darkness and annoyed expressions again : D I will never post explicit images and hope to not have made anybody uncomfortable. Cover done. In all ernestness, are there people interested in a small non canon nsfw book of these two enjoying each other in bed? I am going to make it anyway, but only planned to staple together 5 or 6 for the few people who showed interest in this kind of thing before (as in told me so via pn or comment). And done! I am so happy and surprised how this turnef out. The main color inks reddish brown but when watered down turns into a honey yellow. I did not expect that but the color was so versatile that i enjoyed it a lot. Had to digitally brighten the background around the lowest character. She vanished too much in the chaos.

I will have this with me as a print for the leipzig bookfair and would be very happy about visitors at mk201 : )

I “finished” inking this monstrum - or rather outlining. I will color this with inks in black and sepia, maybe a hint of blue and plan to add more texture where needed.

I wish there was a bit more storytelling or more dynamic in this. I essentially have the characters pose around and filled their surrounding with items of meaning to them. Accessorizing them… At first there also was room for Bob behind Gabriel, but i felt bad to put him in this “room”.  Then again I am not at a level yet, where i can have a cover full of details, with dynamic character poses in a storytelling situation that also works great for an introductory cover that glues people to the page immediately. Gonna get there!

Well. This turned out much differently than i had in mind. I have two spots left to fill for a small aceo print run and decided to finally finish this double card. I went full on comfort zone happiness : ) i just plan to run one print run of 25. Beginners tip… Test out paper and intended matetials befor layering them. The copics surprisingly ate some of the ink and the paper was saturated after just 2 layers of copic. But i had the paper laying around unprotected for years, which can saturate it with humidity.

After the scan i put in some extra shadow i was not sure i really wanted while inking. Like how that floor looks now.

This chapter introduces a new character that’ll let us guess for a while on who’s side he is. We learn something about the mysterious Lady’s past as well.
