You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You do. You feel no ill effects aside from maybe disappointment at having to stop. You tap your foot often. This is a habit.

You are tapping your foot, whether you want to or not. Someone asks you to stop. You can’t. If you try to it feels like holding in a sneeze and the pressure builds up. It might come out in a different, even less controllable action. This is a tic.

You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You do, but immediately feel worse physically or emotionally. It was a way for you to express yourself and how you feel. You may feel pressure. This is a stim.

You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You can’t, because if you do something bad will happen, possibly some specific bad thing. You know it’s irrational, but not doing it gives you anxiety. This is a compulsion.

You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You can’t, because if you do this specific bad thing will happen. It is not irrational to you, although it is to others. This is an erratic/disorganized behavior.

Question for people with autism or on the spectrum- when I'm at a store at checkout, and I get a feeling the cashier is on a spectrum, I like to avoid eye contact cause it might make them more comfortable. Or my coworker, who has told me. Then while we make conversation I just look at the counter instead of at them.

Is this helpful at all? Or am I making people feel weird by treating them differently than I would anybody else? Or is it different depending on the person??

sure, you want to include sexual dimorphism in your alien species, go ahead. I’m actually pro-basing your alien species off of existing species, because every life on earth evolved to fill specific niches. Your aliens could have evolved to fill similar niches and thus look the same as like, a bat or something

and as they say, life takes many forms, ed boy.

oh, but hey, the only sexual dimorphism you’re familiar with is like humans?? and all of your females are smaller, wane-creatures?

uuuuh, but what about species where the female is larger than the male??

what about species where the male is colorfully decorated?

or hell, how about when they look exactly the same?

(as a side note, golden tamarins also practice “polyandry” where two males and one female raise the offspring together with the males doing most of the work, where’s that in my sci-fi Star Trek??)

There are literally so many configurations of sex, family structures, social hierarchy, mating rituals, and general evolutionary tactics to survival, the animal kingdom is rich with inspirational material. Please use it!

I felt the beginnings of lactose intolerance when I was 20 and successfully ate it into submission so now I’m not anymore! The theory (which I learned in microbio class) is that the gut bacteria who digest lactose for you are beginning to die out and be outcompeted by the millions of other gut bacteria. So in theory if you eat a LOT of dairy products, you will feed primarily the gut bacteria who digest lactose and allow them to do better and make more of themselves than the non-lactose-digesting
