Hi! I’m really excited about this zine. I just wanted to check in regarding what was being looked for in portfolios? E.g., anything that would increase (or reduce) the likelihood of a successful application outcome.

We're excited to hear you're thinking about applying to Serenity! The most important quality for your submitted works is to follow our subject guidelines on the application forms (i.e. for writers, be sure to include at least one work that feature the Oldest Dream and the Outer God crew). Also, since we are running a SFW zine, we ask that your portfolio is SFW. Gen works are ideal!

Beyond that, we want to encourage applicants to share what they personally consider the best display of their style! The Serenity mods are interested in seeing a variety of approaches to our zine concept.

We do recommend that in the interest of submitting your ideal works, you make sure to mainly submit completed samples in your application. That is, try to avoid sharing too many sketches or WIPs, so that we can get a better sense of what your finished works for the zine will be like. Hope this helps you feel more confident!

what's the allowed word count for writers?

Hi! There is no word count limit for apps; feel free to submit whichever length pieces you think best display your writing style and your approach to genfic. Please remember that at least one example must include a member of the Outer God Family, depicted in any regression (ex: Kim Dokja, Lee Jihye, Kim Namwoon, Uriel, Lee Hyunsung, and/or Yoo Joonghyuk).  As for the fics in the zine itself, we are currently setting a limit of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 words!

What does spot artist mean?

Hello! Spot artists create multiple small illustrations typically found in picture books.

For our zine, a spot artist is an artist that will work with a writer to illustrate their fics. Spot artists will be expected to create multiple smaller illustrations to highlight key moments or add additional visuals to fics (such as headers or footers, as an example).

Spot artists will not pitch their own ideas for this zine the way a page artist would. Page artists will pitch their own ideas for their illustrations after being accepted; spot artists will choose from and be assigned to a writer's pitch. Spot artist and writer pairs are encouraged to work collaboratively during the creation period.

These are visual examples of spot art, not an example of any one style or format that may be expected from spot artists. Applicants don't need to have any prior experience creating spot art.

While you can apply as both a spot artist and a page artist, please note that you can only be accepted for one role!
