People who criticise Beauty and the Beast, usually do it over the complaint that it romanticised Stockholm syndrome and how the message of the film is trying to encourage women to stay with abusive men.

Excuse me?

Give me one scene where Belle tolerated the Beast's anger, where she wasn't angry, upset or afraid because of it. Belle left the moment she got the chance, only changing her mind when the Beast saved her life, but even then she didn't take any of his shit. Belle was kind but she wasn't a doormat, and it's that kindness that prompted the Beast to be kind in turn and try to change and be a better person. And while Beast might have changed in part with the hope that Belle would break his curse by falling in love with him, she never knew about the curse at all. It wasn't used by the Beast as some bargaining chip or sad backstory. Did people forget that he let Belle go, fully intending to stay cursed forever, if it meant he could help Belle save her father?

Belle never fell in love or chose to excuse the Beast's anger or the way he treated her and her father initially.

Belle fell in love with someone who was trully trying to be a better person, who took interest in her and the things she enjoyed, and who put her needs before his own when it came down to it.

That night, when they arrived at their newly purchased Victorian home in West Philadelphia, they made love underneath the covers and then Gaston fell asleep holding Adam in his arms, thinking of the many possible universes that might exist, and hoping that he found his way to Adam in each and every one.

Adam had just finished wrapping up the leftover baked goods that they would sell for half-price the next day at the Little Rose Cafe and Bakery.

"Yeah,” Gaston said before planting another quick kiss on Adam’s lips. “He can.”

The sun had only just risen above the horizon when Gaston set out on his latest hunting excursion.

Days later, Gaston reached the village, returning with a renewed sense of peace and confidence, and as he passed by one of the shops, he stopped to admire his reflection in the window, thinking about his strange, magical, wonderful friendship, and how Goddamn magnificent he was to have successfully cultivated it.

Air heavy with the sound and scent of rain - Belle usually wakes up full of energy, but it’s one of those languid mornings where not even Belle wants to stir from bed. - “Never,” he promises.

Six inches deep (in mud) - Darcy held his wife’s gloved hand as she hopped off the stile and straight into a mud puddle. - He’d had no idea Mr. Darcy was capable of such a thing, let alone Mrs. Darcy, but he silently congratulated the pair on having the vitality of youth and new love to drive them to carry it out.

Charming in its imperfection - Beast supposes it’s funny that one of his favorite things about Belle is that small piece of hair that always comes loose and hangs over her forehead. - “It’s one of my favorite things.”

Seize such an opportunity - “Would either of you ladies be so kind as to indulge us all with some music?” - It was just as things ought to be, and remain, between them.

Dismissed, rejected, publicly humiliated - Adam tapped the headshot on his desk contemplatively. - “Perfect as a fairy tale.”

Transformation - “It’s breathtaking!” she gasped as she swiveled her head around her. - He was enough.

Teach and teach - The first thing that Ed noticed about Stede Bonnet was that he dressed like some fancy, rich guy from one of those old black and white movies his mom had liked to watch when he was a little kid. - Using a sailing metaphor for riding a motorcycle was a slightly odd choice, but Ed fucking loved every delightfully odd thing about Stede Bonnet.

Warming up - The ice tightening around Beast’s heart wasn’t from the cold—it was from fear that Belle was going to die. - For Belle.

Ungentlemanly - The first time Darcy nearly lost control and spoke obscenity to his bride was not his wedding night. - “Or we can forgo the quarrel and simply agree to fuck like this from now on.”

Walking under ladders - Adam straightened up from where he was weeding to watch Gaston’s backside shifting as he came down the ladder from the roof. - “Exactly.”

I really like how some of these mirror each other so well (3, 7, and 9), and others of them make no sense out of context.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:
