“huh?? why does it??? a spirit????” yuta sputters, cleanse tags suddenly appearing in each hand as they look between mirio’s phone and the vulpix. they continue making vague noises and gestures, unaware of bai’s presence. the zorua only stares at mirio with a coy smile.

“hm~ yuta hasn’t figured it out, but i know you’re hiding something,” bai comments casually. “you’d be the second one we’ve met. but i’ll keep your secret.”

Ahaha, well I can very well understand the…”devotion” some people have for their crafts...

But you seem to be handling it well enough with the help of your Pokémon.

Rest assured, you’ll both become stronger as a result.

If there ever comes a time you may need help with a particularly violent spirit, or you’d like to learn more ways to help these ghostly types, I’d be more than happy to offer my knowledge and assistance. I’ve had to step in and tame a few rowdy spirits back in the day, so I can understand how difficult it can be.

yuta disappears into the cloud of smoke in order to escape scrutiny, though judging from the sound of their voice, they still seem to be close by.

“it’s not-! that’s-! th-there’s nothing like that going on between me and rowan!! w-we’re friends, but not-! like that-!” they sputter, voice squeaking into a higher register. “it’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other, o-of course i’d be excited to see them again…! b-but there’s nothing else going on!”

yuta looks down bashfully, not expecting at all to be praised by such a prominent spirit. it feels nice to be appreciated, after all.

“oh, m-my work? it, um... depends, really.”

“for the more, um, t-tame spirits, sometimes all they need is a proper funeral. to have a place to rest and know they’ve been cared for, and then they can peacefully cross over. i do whatever i can to make them comfortable.”

“u-usually, i go out of my way to find the more... aggressive spirits. th-the ones that become a danger to the living. o-of course, i always try to find a peaceful solution, but a lot of the time that isn’t an option... i know it can be painful for many spirits, b-but it’s my job as an exorcist to make sure they can cross over. at least then they don’t have to suffer anymore...”

yuta can’t help but glance towards their tent where their pokemon are probably still sleeping.

“m-my pokemon are a bit different. they’re not aggressive towards me - a-at least, not anymore in some cases - but each of them need something more specific to help them cross over, so i’m helping them find it, whatever they need.”

a soft, gentle smile flickers across yuta’s face for a moment before it’s replaced by a more nervous, constipated expression.

yuta’s hands fidget in their lap, as if all the words that don’t make it out of their mouth manifest in their twitchy movements instead.

“y-you see, i was born with this... ability? power?? a-and since i was raised in a monastery, we were t-taught to respect the dead just as much as the living,” they begin to explain before their eyes wander back to the steadily brightening horizon. “i-i guess... it makes sense that... i’d want to choose this path. t-to help wandering spirits find peace. many of them have already suffered enough in life, i think...”

“i-it’s a little strange, i never knew much about my parents, but... it feels like... m-maybe, they did stuff like this, too.” yuta swings their feet, feeling a little bashful admitting it out loud for the first time in a long while. they wonder if they should elaborate more, but then realize how much they’ve been rambling already. “a-ah, i hope that answers your question?? i don’t often meet many kind spirits in my line of work, so this is... a nice change of pace...”

“did... you feel that, too? like, a shiver down your spine?” yuta half-whispers to the rufflet perched on their arm, who simply churrs and ruffles its feathers. “mmh... i hope it’s just my imagination, too... can you keep an eye out for me?” the rufflet nods, and after checking their surroundings once more, yuta gives the rufflet a little launch into the air.

“be safe,” yuta says, and the rufflet gives a reassuring chirp before fluttering away. once it’s out of eyesight, yuta’s eyes stop glowing and return to their usual state.

mamoru straightens up, looking even more annoyed. what’s the deal here? he feels like he’s being tugged around on a leash, and even more annoying is that it’s partly his own fault, too. grimacing, he rubs his paws over his face.

“i think... we’re doing this all wrong,” he grumbles eventually. he has a feeling he’s going to regret this. “let’s just. start over. i’m mamoru. and you’re charon, right? why don’t you just... tell me how you guys know yuta, and why yuta thinks your trainer is so great. and then you can ask me something. how’s that?” in all honesty, mamoru isn’t very interested in getting to know charon more than he has to - he just wants to avoid the topic of evolution if he can. then again, yuta seems to want him to make friends, especially with one of his own kind. he’s not entirely happy about it, but it’s a start, of sorts.

“You, what?” He stumbles, surprised by the immediate resignation.

“Where’s Dialga to turn back time on this conversation…” Charon thinks. “What an idiot I am. The first time I meet someone like me and I can’t even say what I mean.”

“I’m sorry,” Charon speaks up, bowing his head. “Truly.”

“I-,” he cuts himself off, carefully trying to course correct. “I’ll leave you before I manage to screw up this conversation even more than I already have.”

mamoru tenses up, a paw clenched in annoyance. for a moment it looks like his heat vents begin to spark, but nothing comes of it.

in the end, he shuts his eyes and lets out a sigh, the stiffness leaving his body with each breath. just a little longer, he tells himself. just a little longer until he can finally rest. when he opens his eyes again, he looks so very tired.

“well then, what do you want to know?” he asks in resignation. it’s not like he has anything else to lose. “you can psychoanalyze me all you want, if that’ll make you happy.”
