The Stafford Road Man
Tumblr media
Alright? You can call me Stafford Road Man. I was part of the earliest groups of Saxons to migrate to Britain after the fall of that pesky Roman Empire in around 500 CE. I lived longer than any of my other First Folks peers, dying at around 45. I had arthritis in my spine, shoulders, and hips, but was most likely a strong and powerful warrior back in my day! I was hit hard in the back on my leg, causing me to walk with a limp, and even had a broken rib that managed to heal. Nothing could keep me down! …Except maybe a bad tooth. I had a large abscess at the front of my mouth which, let me tell you, was unbelievably painful, and eventually gave me blood poisoning and killed me. Shame, innit?

The Patcham Woman
Tumblr media
My name is the Patcham Woman and I was part of Roman Britain. My joints show signs of painful disease and wear over about 30 years but what’s worse is the LITERAL NAIL that was found in the back of my skull. People don’t know whether it was put there after death or if it was the method of which I was killed. It was was the cause of my death, was I executed as a punishment, or was I unlawfully murdered? I’ll never tell.

The Slonk Hill Man
Tumblr media
Well hello, I’m the Slonk Hill Man. I was found in 1968 but had died about 2300 years before that when I was in my late 20s. I was strong, healthy and athletic in life and even recovered from a leg fracture and then continued to be active after that, no mean feat in Iron Age Britain! Even I can admit that my burial was a bit weird. I was laid upon a pile of raw mollusks which, beyond the obvious strangeness, was notable as sea food likely was not a part of my diet🤔

The Ditchling Road Man
Tumblr media
Good afternoon, I’m the Ditchling Road Man. I was part of the Beaker Culture; people from continental Europe who bought to Britain a new wave of metal working and pottery techniques. I was buried in a crouching position with a pottery beaker-jar by my feet, an arrowhead under my head, and some snail shells next to my mouth. I ate a diet of meat, dairy, and wild and cultivated grains. However, during multiple periods when I was younger, I suffered chronic malnutrition and anaemia. Despite this, I stood at 5 foot 6 inches, still taller than the person writing this…

The Whitehawk Woman
Tumblr media
Hi there, I’m the Whitehawk Woman! I was somewhere between 19-25 when I died in what is now Whitehawk, East Sussex. I wasn’t born there though, isotopes from my teeth can tell that I came from somewhere much closer to the modern day Welsh border, meaning I traveled a fair amount in my short life! I was buried surrounded by 10 large chalk blocks, along side two smaller pieces of chalk (maybe pendants or charms), two sea urchin fossils, and the remains of my baby. I was in good health when I died so unfortunately it was probably childbirth that killed me, but don’t be too sad. Great care was taken in my burial so I had lots of people around me who loved my baby and I very much💗
