my hot take that I've come to after sitting in it for a few days is that just like rerecording fearless/red/speak now/1989 lead to a lot of her musings on midnights, her presumably getting ready to release the rerecordings of rep and debut heavily influenced this album in terms of some sound choices but also theming... like, her rage and rebellion feels very rep coded and the unfiltered smart mouth nature is very debut coded imo

i think the rerecordings cracked her entire life open. like we talked about the emotional labor involved and how it’s both good and difficult but HOO BOY

I need people to stop blaming the death of movies on “quips”. A quip is just a funny line of dialogue. That’s all. Like I just saw a post talking about quips and the death of movies and brought up Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a better movie and yes it is but also that movie is FULL OF QUIPS. I just rewatched The Princess Bride. It’s all quips. Every single line. And it’s a masterpiece.

Movies suck when people don’t care about the art they’re making. That includes them not caring about their quips. Which is why a lot of comic relief dialogue ALSO sucks now. But the problem isn’t that funny dialogue exists.

unrelated to the ongoing conversation but i just realised that in the alien-microwave-asylum-sterile, very not human imagery of it all she chose the name based on the two maybe most human things (torture and poetry) and it makes my heart warm for the reasons i cant explain yet, and i think the whole album is like that its devastating but with these invisible flickers of something hopeful and human that you cam only feel but dont know why

what's even more insane is that she topped 1989 TV, which came out literally six months ago, by an entire million albums. that is more copies than lover and folklore sold in their first weeks!

loosely speaking the first half of the album (standard edition) covers a mindset where life is a whirlwind and felt in the extremes: rabid happiness and frenzied highs, deep and all consuming anger. Overcompensating for being sad by acting like it's your birthday. You type only in all caps. This all goes in line with experiencing moods that land on the far edges of the spectrum. In the second half, those 15 songs are when you're past that stage, things are evening out, and landing closer to the middle ... and its just more reflective sadness and mourning, a more pondering state of being, quietly wondering what if's and what now's, and also being happy in a content way that is steady and measured. You're no longer screaming in all caps.

we've all talked about the iconic neil cameo (i will never tire of talking about the iconic neil cameo) but the scraps jean hands us about andrew? warms my heart. the fact that people in the exy world have picked up on how he's actually putting an effort into games this year. the way he heaves himself out of goal so fast to defend neil from riko. that wymack told the press it was andrew's idea to put neil in defense and it was hailed as genius. andrew getting the recognition he deserves, even if he doesn't care for it. jean speaking to an empty room, "he will be court", as confidently as kevin speaks about neil. andrew having a dedicated candy drawer. andrew always looking at wymack when kevin and neil are being pedantic. andrew and neil and the quiet way they are wrapped around each other's existence. andrew minyard.

online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.

and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.

there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't think anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.

You know how Taylor said she had been working on this album for the past 2 years? What do you think the concept would have been without the Matty of it all? Or did the Matty of it all start two years ago with “thoughts” in your OPINION?

i think it started as musings on the destruction of a long-term relationship and became what it is in tandem with the MH stuff starting to blossom and then ultimately falling apart. he was in her life for awhile! they worked on midnights together!

i think at various points she thought it would be a break-up story, a love story for the ages, a fantastic fairytale, the most devastating tragedy, a death tale, and a horror film. in the end, it kind of became all of them, but mostly just her bread-and-butter: a story about coming of age.

i think one thing that bridgerton s2 does well is establish why kate and anthony gravitate to each other. so many romance stories flop because they cant convince you what the deal is but bridgerton is like well they are both eldest siblings they are both patronizing and overbearing they are both control freak know it alls. put them in a jar lock them in a room. haha
