part one
[...]
Even through the glass stained window, you could see the full moon sit high in the sky surrounded by hundreds of glowing dots. It's glow cast down on your pajamas and the floor just below the windowsill where your body was nestled up in, arms curled around your legs that were pulled to your chest. Your own nook next to your thrown about bed.
"You need to sleep." You heard a mumble from your roommate, who was hidden under a deep mountain of blankets and pillows. It took her a moment, but Misty peeked between them just enough for you to see her eyes. Her voice was barely audible. "Charms demonstration in the morning."
You didn't say anything, only shook your head slightly and kept your stare out the window. She shifted back to the sleeping position she held before and it didn't take her long to fall back into unconsciousness without another word.
It had been four days since the letter had been delivered to your parents, Jives had come back the day after you sent it and buried his head deep in the crook of your elbow as if he had read it and knew to comfort you. There wasn't even a howler sent to the Great Hall during any meal time to expose what a great disappointment you were to your family and that you weren't going to have a place to stay over summer break.
It didn't take more than two days for your friends to question the distance you were putting between you and them. You didn't dare tell them the real reason. Pity wasn't exactly what you were looking for at the moment.
The moon disappeared out of your line of sight as it climbed higher in the sky, your shared dormitory becoming entirely black. Your socks provided warmth, but you were still able to feel the cold from the hardwood floors as you stepped down, snatching your wand and shoving it in your pocket as you shuffled out the door.
After six years of Hogwarts schooling you had learned your way around the castle easily, even in the darkness. Your only concern lay with the perfect prefects wandering the halls searching for someone to bust for their own personal enjoyment, sending them to detention and getting a purely metaphorical gold star in the process.
Instead of footsteps, though, you heard the rapid beating of soft paws against the concrete floors with nails clicking down against it in the same rhythm. Your heart had frozen mid-beat and you stopped moving before you reminded yourself of the abundance of cats that roamed around the castle all hours of the day.
It continued to race back and forth around you, like a taunt, just waiting for you to become overwrought. It sounded heavier than a cat, and you questioned just how big it could possibly be.
"Lumos," You whispered into your wand as you trodden carefully on the outline of the carpet. The paintings closest to you began to stir, some of them especially light sleepers shushed you and told you to piss off in their own gentlemanly vocabulary.
The scurrying around you seemed to stop mid pace, disappearing behind you. It didn't take you long to locate the East Tower, you passed the Charms room, of which you could hear snoring inside. You would have looked inside if you hadn't remembered Flitwick had charmed his doors after hours for it to roar if anybody dare try to open it. It would be another few detentions for you, not to mention humiliation.
The moonlight illuminated the concrete floors once again and you began to lower your wand, taking your first step on the stairs to the Astronomy Tower. "Nox."
You reached the top with minimal slips and bumps on your way up, your attention immediately drawn to the railing where the light bounced off of it's natural shine. After placing your wand back in your pocket, you clasped both hands over the railing and leaned to look at the moon. It would be on it's way down soon enough.
You laid down on the floor, looking through the bars to all the constellations in the sky, naming as many as you could to yourself.
"Delphinus..." You said in a soft voice, your fingers raised out in front of you and traced the outline of the stars, following each invisible line. It was one of the smallest constellations.
A thump made your hand fall to your side again and you leaned up on your elbows, staring curiously towards the stairwell where the sound had come from. You doubted any prefect would give away their position, not many were clumsy and carefree.
For a few seconds, they still failed to show, but you could hear the steps beginning to creak as they got closer. Heavy breathing, too, as if they were out of breath.
You first saw two dark, furry ears peak up above the staircase and your head involuntarily tilted as a response, it was far too big to be a cat. Then, the rest of the creature jumped up to the final step with a happy expression on it's face. It sniffed the air, and then looked at you. It was a dog.
It barreled towards you and knocked it's head into your throat, rubbing against you as if begging to be pet. You complied as you sat up straight against the pillar and got a better look, hands running through it's black fur and scratching beneath it's ears. He had no collar.
"Dogs aren't allowed at Hogwarts..." You said to yourself, a smile creeping up on your face as he contently closed his eyes when you scratched below his chin. "You come from Hogsmeade? Or the forest?"
He turned in a circle as if ready to lay down on your outstretched legs, and when he turned you were able to see a bloody gash on one of his front legs and you stopped him with a hand on his cheek. It was fresh, and quite long, almost reaching his paw. You made sure not to touch the cut as your fingers danced over the fur and red now stained your skin, "What happened to you?"
The dog whimpered and pulled away, mouth closing as he took a step back. You frowned and felt your heart began to chip away, before moving your hand and scratching the fur on his head once again.
An idea hadn't fully developed in your mind before the words left your mouth. "Follow me."
You rose from your place on the hardwood floors and descended the steps quietly, whereas the dog didn't seem to care as he jumped, as well as he could with his injury, down the steps excitedly. Reaching the bottom, you began to walk freely through the hallway before your pant leg was tugged on harshly. You looked down, and the dog kept it's eyes trained on something behind you.
Looking up, you saw a blonde prefect on patrol, wand in his hand casting a light as his eyes wandered over the details of the hallway. You wanted to say you knew him, but his house colors weren't present on his attire and it was nearly impossible to tell, you weren't particularly interested in getting close enough to see his face.
"Come on," You whispered to the dog, ushering it to follow you as you sped up when going the opposite way. He ran much faster to you, but when it came to a T shape between the halls he stopped, not knowing where to go.
You turned, once out of sight of the prefect you slowed to a leisurely walk. Looking down at the dog, you giggled underneath your hand, it seems to saunter beside you, following you with only faith as it's motivation.
When you reached the dungeon stairs and traveled to the bottom, you realized he hadn't followed. You turned around to see him at the top, pawing the first concrete step sadly with a small whimper. He didn't want to move, you began to think he was more intelligent than you originally believed.
"Are you afraid of some Slytherins?"
He looked up at you, without a second thought he hopped down the stairs as if to prove himself. You laughed to yourself and reached the door to the Potions classroom, pulling out your wand again and pointing it to the lock.
"Alohomora." With a satisfying click, it unlocked and you caught it before it could fall to the ground. You opened the door, peering inside first before motioning for the dog to walk inside. "After you."
He trotted in happily, making his way to the very tiny desk in the corner. You recognized it as your desk, where you had not been twelve hours ago, and he pulled himself up on the stool where your partner sat. Sirius. You shook your head with a smile.
You placed a cauldron on the table, filling it with water and watching the dog out of the corner of your eye, he set his head and front legs down on the table as if he was growing bored or tired. Your fingers followed the table of contents of an old Potions textbook, mouthing the words to yourself as you flipped the pages to what you needed. Murtlap Essence.
"Would you like to make yourself useful?" You questioned, pulling your eyes from where they were latched on the page to look at him. His head lifted curiously and his ears raised. "Go find some Murtlap Tentacles."
He was quick to jump down from the stool and race towards the shelves, you went to a different side of the room and gathered the other ingredients necessary. You held two jars in your arms when you heard a loud crash from behind you, you almost dropped the ingredients you had in surprise.
Turning around, you saw the dog at your feet now, holding the unscathed jar in his mouth with a sad expression on his face. His tail and ears were both pointed to the ground and his eyes looked terrified, refusing to look back at the mess. That's what your eyes were directed to next, the second shelf had a few jars hit the ground and break, their ingredients scattered all over the floor.
You bent down, sitting on your knees while setting the ingredients on the floor. You slowly pulled one from his mouth, and after you did so his head dropped to the ground, but was caught in your hands as you lifted it back up to look at you.
"Hey, it's okay! I can clean it up, it's okay," You reassured with a smile, pressing a kiss to his forehead. That seemed to perk him up, mouth falling open and rail beginning to wag high in the air again. He practically jumped into your arms for a hug with both front legs on your shoulders, and you held him close as you laughed.
It didn't take long to clean up the mess with a simple enchantment, the broken class flying through the air as you dropped the ingredients into the cauldron. It was silent for a while, you absentmindedly stirred as you turned and looked at where he placed himself yet again on Sirius' stool.
"I need to call you something."
He began to paw at the desk where he sat.
"Desk? What are you–"
He stopped and tilted his head at you, almost questioning.
"How about Rover?"
He shook his head as if getting rid of water after being out and about on a rainy day.
"Snuffles?"
A growl.
It took you a moment, but you propped your chin up on your hand and stared him down. Your eyes bounced to the nearby window and then back to him. You did meet in the Astronomy Tower. "How about Star?"
His head raised and he painted heavily, as if giving his blessing to the nickname. You smiled triumphantly, reeling back and glancing to the now blue potion that was done brewing. "Star it is, then."
You placed the cauldron on the ground, and Star jumped down and sniffed it. He pulled his head away and shook it, as if telling you no. You knew why, it smelled absolutely horrid.
"You have to drink it."
He took a cautious step forward as if it would hurt him, but you were almost absolutely sure that it wouldn't. It was going to completely cure the gash he had acquired, but it would soothe it and help it heal over time.
Star lapped up some of the essence, then taking a few steps back telling you he was finished. You picked it up and placed it on the desk again, pouring it into a small jar for you to keep for emergencies.
Keeping an eye on Star as you put the items in their proper places, you spoke. "I'll be going to my dormitory soon, I suppose you should go back to... Well, wherever you came from. I'm still not quite sure."
You lead him out the door, and in the hallway you bent down to his level. "I hope to see you soon, Star. Feel better."
Your fingers shifted through his thick fur and you smiled, and as you let go he ran past you and up the dungeon's steps, as if to get out of there as quick as he could. Whether he was afraid or if it was something else entirely, you weren't quite sure.

"So where'd you run off to last night?" James asked at breakfast, the deep circles under his eyes contrasted the bright smile on his face. Sirius sat next to him, Remus and Peter on the opposite side of the table. His fork jabbed in their direction, but he kept his eyes on Sirius. "If anything, I think you owe Moony an explanation."
"Bloody hell, James, you make it sound like I abandoned you," Sirius shook his head and stuffed his mouth with food. He glanced over at Remus, who had his eyes almost completely closed and his head was propped up on his hand. He was falling asleep.
"You did! You know how hard it was to drag a deadweight Remy back to our dormitory?"
"Piss off," The boy murmured, surprising the three other's by the fact that he was aware of the conversation, and conscious enough to comprehend it. Winces crossed their faces at his attitude, the harshness in his voice uncharacteristic.
Peter leaned over the table and got a look at Sirius's arm, the sleeves of his robes and underlying white dress shirt rolled up. "Your arm looks stitched up. You go to Pomfrey?"
He looked down, turning it to see that it had been healing, just like you said it would. Granted, it could be better, and it still looked like a nasty cut, but it was healing. That's more than his mates could say about their own acquired scars from the night before. His thumb ran over the red skin around the cut that was still quite sensitive.
"No, actually, it was a friend."
"A- who? Do they know?" Peter pried. It was clear that his comment built tension in the air, as everything else seemed to drown out and he and James looked to be on the edge of their seats.
Sirius rolled his eyes, out of the corner of his eye he could see Remus perk up at the implication of someone knowing about their monthly outings. His tone got more aggressive, almost challenging Peter as he stared him down. "Of course she doesn't, she didn't know it was me. It was..." His tongue ran over his teeth. "Padfoot."
James raised his eyebrows, "Padfoot? You went and visited some girl..." His smile returned. "As a dog?"
Peter leaned back and the tension rolled off his shoulders as he smile, looking over at Remus who was more interested in the conversation now that it wasn't about him.
"Is it the only way she could stand you? Was it a dog date?"
Sirius laughed at the accusations, it sounded more forced than he would like. He loaded his spoon with oatmeal. "She just helped with my arm. Don't be a git, git."
"So, who is it?" Remus asked now, ignoring how he launched the oatmeal over at James for his prodding questions. He began to smirk. "I mean, you said she's a girl. A girl you didn't sleep with."
"Must be special," Peter chimed.
The Great Hall was always bustling with students jumping from one table to another to visit their friends and walking around the perimeter, but even then as Sirius looked up from his table he could see you through the many heads in his way as you entered the room with a friend at your side.
You didn't even glance his way, too deeply involved in the conversation you were having. Your hands gesticulated wildly as you spoke, an excited expression on your face, and he began to wonder if you were telling about your adventure with him last night. A part of him wanted you to, but the other knew that it could end badly if you did.
"I think so, Wormtail."

[...]
The Whomping Willow had always been your spot, a place where you could go, unbothered, even by the swinging branches themselves. To the amazement of other students, the tree didn't make an effort to throw you out of range when getting too close, you were even allowed to lean up against it.
When others came into the picture, attempting the same as you, they didn't have quite your luck. They were slapped around and pushed away, falling on their arses each time and you just watched from your place underneath it. It was said that you'd bewitched the Willow, forcing it to let you lie there almost every day, but the reality was you hadn't done a single thing. You weren't sure why it let you get so close while you worked on your homework, but it did.
You had figured it out accidentally, running around the grounds away from Lily as you held her newest love letter from James Potter. She was ready to throw it away without giving it a second thought, but you knew just how pure his intentions were, and believed he was right for her.
You were too busy laughing and looking behind you to notice where you were going, and paid no attention to Lily's screams telling you to stop, she'd been doing exactly so for the past two minutes but only jokingly. They were getting louder and less playful, and you didn't realize where you were until you tripped over the root of a tree.
Laughter had died out and you pushed yourself onto your hands and knees, you had dropped the letter below you. You turned your head looked up to see the Whomping Willow giving you what you could only describe as a menacing glare, or that's what you had interpreted it's details as, as fear took over your body and you froze.
It was quiet, as you waited for it to make a move to remove you from it's bark. It's branches waved back and forth in the air as the wind shoved past, pushing your hair out of your face. You took small and slow movements as you stood, holding the letter again. You didn't break the contact your eyes held with the branches.
Lily still stood a safe distance away, one hand reaching beneath her robes and gripping her wand for precaution. She took one step towards the tree, and after her second step the air became stiff. The branches had their own control and stopped swaying peacefully, and stood straight mimicking the hairs on the back of your neck.
She hesitated, but stepped again. One branch swung down and pushed her aside, not too harshly but enough to knock her down with a groan.
"Lily!" You called, watching as the wood retracted to it's usual place. You ran forward without care if the Willow was going to hit you or not.
At her side, you asked if she was okay. However, it was as if the world had gone entirely mute and she had forgotten about you as she just stared into the hole of the Willow tree.
You followed her gaze, shaking your head and extending your hand as you stood to pull her up with you. "Let's not worry about it, Lily, we got lucky."
Lily shoved her wand back in her pocket. "Strange..."
After that incident you had taken it upon yourself to study the Whomping Willow, and much to your surprise you seemed to be the only one that could get so close. It had become your own little tradition to seek out the tree when you wanted to be alone, and never came a time where you weren't welcomed.
You sat on a particularly large root now, legs crossed out in front of you with your charms book resting on top, you used it's hard cover as a surface for the paper you scribbled on.
Boisterous laughter broke your train of thought and disrupted your writing, the letter you were writing became smudged by the sudden flinch in your hand mid stroke. You looked up and saw two boys, one Ravenclaw and a Hufflepuff jumping around and pushing each other as they arrived to the grass area.
"Oi! You looking to get slapped around? How'd you get up there?"
You glanced up with hooded eyes as you lifted your parchment and shoved it between two pages of your textbook. It was time to go, you had been compromised, and Potions would be starting soon.
It was your belief that you could only get so close because of intent, that's what the Whomping Willow saw in each student. It was magical after all, and you were sure that it wasn't only here to threaten student's lives, but protect them as well. It hadn't been your intent to hurt the tree when you ran towards it unknowingly, you didn't come to mock or prove your strength as a challenge with it, it was a mistake. The Willow must've seen that, or else you wouldn't be there.
"You think it broke?"
"A tree can't just break, you git."
A clock began to methodically chime and your eyes were drawn to the castle of a school. Lunch was over now and passing period was just beginning.
The boys began to turn around and walk, just as a branch extended and pushed the Ravenclaw down before retracting. It left a hint of a smile on your face as you collected your books thrown to the side and followed their trail to the school, listening to the Ravenclaw's complaints.
When reaching the school the two had turned down their own hall and you continued towards the dungeons, regretting not dropping off your charms book in your dorm before the class had started. It was feeling heavy and you were already late, you could tell as an owl squawked at you from the side of the hall and a sneer from an old painting.
Slipping through the wooden doors, the class turned and stared for a short time before realizing it was only you. Slughorn met your eyes but continued to teach his lesson at the front, prepping the class for their potions. You scanned the room quickly for an empty seat, to which you only found one at the front of the room next to Sirius Black.
He had been moved there from almost the second that first term started, too much noise was made in the back with his mates, Peter and James, and now they were all scattered throughout the room permanently. James was also in the first row, just on the complete opposite side, and Peter sat in the back.
You really had nothing against Sirius, but you didn't know what to expect when you slid into the stool next to him. He looked at you silently, eyes dropping down to your robes almost immediately. Making assumptions, you were sure. Not only because of your y/h colors, but from the small dirt stains from the tree and ground you had been up against a few minutes prior.
Slughorn's speech ended and you caught on to what he was saying, enough to know what precautions to take. You knew what to do with the help of your textbook, flipping to the right page slowly but surely as the other students grabbed their ingredients. Sirius stayed and scrubbed his cauldron without a word.
There was a tall figure shadowing you slightly, and you turned to see the disappointing expression on your Professor's face.
"This isn't the first time you've been late to my class, miss y/l/n," He chastised, "This calls for another detention."
"I know, Professor. See you on Friday," You gave him a thin-lipped smile. It annoyed him, his only response was a sigh and a shake of his head as he walked off.
Sirius raised an eyebrow as he set his scrub brush down on the table, "You know, if you stopped being so late, I reckon you could get out of these detentions."
You looked at him in slight disbelief, you really had expected him to ignore it, and now here he was giving you advice just to poke fun? "Pardon me?"
"Where do you run off to anyway?" He leaned forward, resting his head in the palm of his hand. "Shrieking Shack? Black Lake?"
What you had mistaken for arrogance was him trying to be funny, you realized, and it worked as you smiled and shook your head. "I would reckon so if I had gone mad. You realize none of this is your business, yeah?"
"I want it to be."
You rolled your eyes and stood up from your stool, off to grab the ingredients. "Only in your dreams, Black."
He continued to stare down the back of your head as you tucked glass jars in the space between your arms and your chest, clutching them. Until his head was pushed forward, he was so unprepared he almost hit the rim of the cauldron. He turned behind him to see Peter and James giggling as they rushed to their seats, and just as he rose from his seat with a determined and mischievous glare he was shot down.
"Mr. Black!"
Tumblr media
The school hours had ended not long ago, and instead of books and quills in your possession, now all that you had was a letter stuffed in it's envelope. As you looked down at it, weaving it between your fingers, you realized just how bad your hands were shaking with nerves.
Your quest was to the Owlrey, the time it took to get there was tiring, especially with the steep path once you got to the rocky hill the tower was on. Trips were taken before and at first you had believed they would get easier, but they never did, the path only became memorized.
On your way you stepped past a pile of well-past brown leaves absentmindedly as you flipped over the letter and looked at it's dedication. The y/l/n's.
Behind you, you heard the crunch of fallen leaves and a few sticks tucked under the pile and you froze where you stood, looking behind you but you could see nothing past the curve on the spiral trail. Holding your breath, you could hear the sounds of heavy footsteps getting closer.
You slinked behind a boulder on the side of the hill, keeping your back pressed up against it as you waited for the student to pass. It was more than likely they didn't know you were here, either, and just on their way to deliver a letter of some sort. You remained curious, nevertheless.
Their steps became clearer and you waited, becoming more nervous than you knew you needed to be. A building anticipation as you began to pray to dear Merlin it wasn't Malfoy or Snape, but then you figured Malfoy was far too stuck up to get his hands dirty with a mere owl. He'd have one of his followers do the work for him, which was much less threatening.
A figure passed and for a second you swore it was Snape, first recognizing the long, jet black hair. But this student's was more free rather than slicked back and looking like it was glued to his head. Their hands were stuck in their pockets and they kept their eyes up, looking at the sky. You were able to catch their features, as well as the Gryffindor house colors on his tie.
An overdramatic, but playful sigh left your lips and your arms fell to your sides, "Are you serious?"
You surprised him, you could tell as he turned around and had his eyebrows pulled together in confusion for a short second, just before it turned into one of pride as a cheeky smirk took over, hoping you wouldn't notice that you caught him off guard. You knew you did.
"'Fraid so, darling. You waiting up for me?" Sirius cocked an eyebrow and walked down to where you were, still up against a rock. The steepness of the hill only made him taller than he already was, towering over you.
"More of catching my stalker," You corrected.
"You're hiding behind a boulder."
"You're following me up a mountain."
His mouth fell open as he failed to come up with a rebuttal to defend his actions, and it was your turn to smirk as you bumped your shoulder with his and continued on the trail. He was quick to turn around and follow your actions once again, slowing down when he reached your side.
Sirius kept his eyes on you, and then they fell to the letter in your hands that you kept on the opposite side of you, almost as if you were hiding it from him.
"Don't see why you're suddenly so curious to know of my whereabouts outside of class," You told him, enough courage filling your chest to ask such a question outright.
He cocked his head, "We've developed a rapport, wouldn't you say? Enough for me to feel free to irritate you as much as I please."
Scoffing, you shook your head and looked down at the yellowing grass. It was pushed down from all the times students, like yourself, had walked on it. At one point in time you had questioned why Hogwarts hadn't replaced it with stones, and then you realized the steepness of the hill was enough of a trek, rocks would just act as marbles.
"And I'm interested in you."
"Interested?" You echoed, you hadn't spoken much with Sirius, and told yourself there was no way he could catch feelings this soon. That day marked the first time you had spoken to him in class as well as out of it.
"Of course, it's not a everyday you meet someone as mysterious and secretive as you, love."
You exhaled relief. He was just curious. The two of you finally met the Owlrey structure, stepping on to the smooth concrete with scattered feathers all around, some still falling from the birds in the sky.
"I wouldn't say I'm mysterious, but I do like my privacy," You playfully glared at him as you walked backwards through the open doorway just to face him.
It was much darker inside even with the open spaces for the owls to get in and out, there was no definite life source other than the sun which was currently covered by dull clouds. Unlike outside, feathers here were grouped together and piled high, but swept out of the way for some space to walk. Owls sat in their respective spaces and watched the two look up and marvel at the building.
You searched for your own, Jives. He had a particular brown spot covering his left wing and a white line that swirled on his stomach. It was hard to miss.
Silence took over the two of you, only listening to the flutter and hoots of the owls around you. Sirius watched as you looked up and brought two fingers to your lips, a loud whistle echoing off the concrete.
Jives peeked his head out of where he was perched in one of the compartments, swooping down and landing on one of the sills at eye level. His head tilted as he watched you step over a pile of feathers and approached him, you stroked his feathers as you whispered the address to him.
Sirius waited patiently, body up against a pillar next to an owl that he shared a glance with, and then a shrug. When he looked at you again, your owl had taken off and you rested your head in your arms as you watched him go.
"Pen pal?" He questioned as he sauntered up beside you, mimicking your stance as he looked up at the sky. The birds circled and perched themselves on the roof of the Owlrey, their feathers floating down slowly but surely just out of your reach.
"Parents," You corrected him.
He hummed. For a second he didn't say anything. "What's it about?"
You whipped your head to him with raised eyebrows, "You saying it's not normal to write your parents?"
"Not for me." You rolled your eyes, turning around and beginning to leave the building. He followed you out the doors, stepping over the feathers. "Why so secretive? Planning to take over the school? You a death eater? Madly in love with Inverse Pinocchio?"
You couldn't stop the laughter that bubbles in your throat as you shook your head. "All of the above."
He laughed as well, catching up beside you. "I don't suppose you'll be letting up any time soon."
"You're getting better at this."

meeting sirius black / asking you out would include...
a/n: idk why i’m having so much trouble writing lmao oopsies it’s been a hot minute. i’ve had 0 motivation for 0 reason anyway here u go request something pls :)
gryffindor!reader
- he had his eye on you since the sorting hat ceremony
- he thought you were. so cute. and you being placed in the same house was him was just all the better
- while he had had interest, he didn't see you much after that first day and forgot about you
- until fifth year
- you were in the same potions class
- of course, it had been a while
- it wasn't until the middle of first term when he recognized you
- after dicking around with remus in the back of the class, the two of them were separated
- and your usual partner, severus, had gotten replaced
- you didn’t really know severus, besides the snide comments you’d received from him on more than one occasion
- but you weren’t too ecstatic about sirius either
- you prepared yourself for the most excruciating annoyance for a lifetime
- but it wasn’t that bad ??? surprise surprise
- it took a moment for him to piece together where he knew you from
- but when he placed it, he smirked to himself, although you didn’t seem too keen on talking to him with your head in a textbook
- he found it uncomfortably silent
- “i’m sirius, love.”
- “y/n.” you didn’t look up
- “love sounds better.”
- you hated that you blushed, but you did
- you told yourself it was just some pickup line
- but he had genuine interest in you
- it showed every day
- he’d keep talking to you
- and you started to warm up to him more and more
- not only metaphorically, but physically
- his constant compliments made your stomach do jumping jacks
- remus sat behind you during all that time
- and was getting increasingly annoyed at the slow burn
- “you going to ask her out, mate, or are you sitting around waiting for someone else to?”
- “oh, piss off, moony”
- that made him nervous though
- and he started to notice the lingering gazes from some ravenclaw fellow in your class
- when he watched him graze your hand to reach a jar of dried bat wings, he was fed up he got jealous a little too easily
- when you came back with the jars of ingredients, he spoke immediately
- “what do you think about going out with me?”
- “pardon me?”
- “what would you think of you and me getting together?”
- “i think it would be nice”
- “good”
- “so are you asking me or not, wanker?”
- “well, yeah. i thought that was clear enough.”

- you knew who sirius was
- of course you knew who sirius was
- the blood trailer your house mates had shit talked into oblivion
- and while you weren't a believer that he was a blood traitor, you did believe he was complete and utter arse
- you'd been witness of him every day leaning against one of the doors to the great hall, with a different girl
- when quidditch season started up, you had joined the team
- and after an interaction on a training field, you had learned he was on his team as well
- it was a screaming match between your team captain and his
- you had to diffuse the situation
- “michael, come on, we still have time later. we don’t have a match for a few weeks. let it go.”
- you quite literally had to pull him away
- you made eye contact with sirius and james as you turned him away, and did your best to ignore the arrogant smirks that blanketed their thankfulness
- you saw him up close again at the match against gryffindor, standing across from each other and not breaking eye contact as the ref read out the rules
- once in the air, the game had been going swimmingly
- gryffindor - 7, slytherin - 10
- the game had traveled up farther in the sky with each point gained, the crowd could barely see you anymore with the amount of clouds
- it was a struggle in getting the quaffle
- “woah! guys, look out!” someone screamed
- you stopped your broom in its place and looked to see that everyone else had done the same, and you wondered what was going on
- you looked up, and saw somebody falling
- “holy shit, that’s sirius!” it was another gryffindor you couldn’t place
- no one was making any moves to save him, some continuing on with the game and snatching quaffles again— he kept falling
- “ah, bloody hell”
- you dropped the quaffle that had been tucked under your arm and quickened your broom’s pace as you dove down to catch him
- he was just beneath your grasp, your fingers barely touching his uniform
- when you finally got ahold of the fabric, he almost pulled you down with him
- you moved your grip to his forearm instead, and stopped your broom from diving down any further, or in just a few seconds you’d end up hitting the ground
- you were sure he’d be passed out
- but apparently not
- he brushed his hair out of his face with his free hand, then held onto the broom as he looked up
- “seems ive fallen for you, y/n.”
- “that is,,, absurdly lame, sirius.”

- could’ve been cheating, he considered
- but you were a ravenclaw, he figured it was doubtful
- sirius has never spoken a word to you, by the time he had reached detention each day you were already asleep. when it was time to leave, you were one of the first to escape

scars

warning: some bullying and assumptions
a/n: theres some angst if you squint,,, anyway i like the concept but this is a little messy to me
[...]
Remus watched you from across the library, where he had originally come to study with his best mates. But even if he ended up giving them his attention, it was no secret it would turn out to be a lost cause. Their laughter battles against Madame Pince’s constant shushes directed towards their table, but it all seemed to drown out as he stared.
The title of the book you were reading was disclosed only to you, as you hid it with your arms from any peering eyes, only making him all the more curious. As old as the books in this library were, it was almost pristine from what he could see, minimal tears and stains which was much more than he could say from the other books lying around. You were sat by yourself, but it didn't take a genius to notice that that was always the case.
He really didn't know anything about you, not a lot did, even if the rest liked to believe so. They had made their own assumptions about you since your first year at Hogwarts, where you came covered head to toe in whatever clothing you could find. You had been called a prude more times than you could count. Even in the warmer months, your y/h scarf was pulled tightly around your neck and the sleeves of your sweater gripped your skin with no extra wiggle room.
"I heard she's a Death Eater," Peter nudged him. Remus then realized his stare didn't go unnoticed by his friends, they had stopped horsing around and looked at her as well. He removed his hand from underneath his chin and looked at him. "She hides the Dark Mark under her sleeves."
"She got those scars from a Centaur after picking a fight," James said. There was a prominent scar on your cheek that split into two like an old trail, then another that traveled from your hand and disappeared underneath your sleeve.
Sirius shook his head with a smile, propping his head up on his hand. "No, what it really is–" Remus turned to his friend with interest at his convincing tone. "–is that that scarf is the only thing keeping her head attached to the rest of her body. Without it, it would just roll right off."
He and James burst into a fit of laughter, falling back into their chairs. Peter laughed into his hands, not noticing how Remus rolled his eyes at the lot of them. He looked back where you sat, only to watch as your eyes flickered to him for just a moment before you got up to return your book to it's rightful place. Then he had lost you amongst the bookshelves.
Remus stared at the ceiling of his shared dormitory, the moonlight casting a shadow of his bedpost. It was only reminding him of how little time he had left to leave, every nerve in his body was itching for him to get up run out of the Gryffindor tower already. His fingers were ghosting over the backpack he kept tucked under his bed, like every full moon.
He rose from his bed, watching the sleeping bodies around him if they stirred. Slinging the backpack over his shoulder, he slipped out the door and shut it gently behind him.
As he tiptoed cautiously through the halls, he held his wand in one hand, casting Lumos, and had the Marauders Map in the other. His head whipped around from time to time anxiously, as if a figure would come up to him that wasn't seen on the map. But it had never been wrong before.
Remus was able to slip out of the school doors– it was never hard, they were always open, after all. Dumbledore believed they had enough protection even as the war was building up.
As he approached the edge of the Forbidden Forest a familiar feeling was building throughout his spine and reaching his head, his head rolled around on his shoulders as if a sudden chill had blown over him. He tucked the map and his wand in his backpack.
He hastily speed-walked through the forest, dropping his backpack and stripping himself of his hoodie and other layers to avoid ruining his clothes. Remus clamped his hand down on the nearest tree as his heavy breaths became more prominent and sweat formed a thick layer on his forehead.
The clouds uncovered the moon and it's light began to shine through the dark tree branches, and he began to lose himself.
Remus expected it to be dark when he woke up, he expected to once again wake up with only a slight clue where he was and follow the candles sitting on Hogwarts' walls to lead him back to his dormitory. Instead, even with his eyes closed he could see a flickering orange light being cast on his face, he slowly opened them to see a fire pit just a few feet away around the corner of a tree.
He looked around, and found himself against an old tree with his backpack and clothes tossed down next to him, but it wasn't where he remembered being last. He was closer to the edge before, now, he wasn't quite sure how deep he was in the woods. He could only go so far before it became dangerous.
Trying to be as quiet as he could, he pulled his clothes on again. There was someone out of his line of sight, the one who had built the fire.
Remus peered around the bark of the tree to look at the fire, eyeing your back that was to him as you silently placed more logs in the fire to keep it going. He found it impossible to tell who you were, he didn’t even know if you were aware of where he had been around the corner.
While adjusting his foot, he stepped on an almost entirely brown leaf that crunched under his weight. He wasn’t so sure if his heart had stopped entirely or it was beating so fast he couldn’t feel it anymore, but either way, you didn’t turn around, and you didn’t flinch.
"You're gonna freeze if you keep standing there," You said nonchalantly, sitting down on the forest floor. He stayed put as he watched you grab a stick and begin to take jabs at the fire.
Slowly, he lifted his backpack and passed you to the other side of the fire. “y/n? what are you doing here?” He sat down on a pile of leaves and set his backpack down beside him, eyes twinkling in wonder as he stared you down.
You glanced up at him for a moment, looking down again. It seemed as if you didn't care, but that was almost always the case. "Didn't know you were a werewolf as well."
You weren’t dressed in your robes, just as he wasn’t, either. Instead wearing pajama pants that matched the navy color of the sky, and a black tank top. Remus' eyes raked over your body upon realizing he was able to see the scars that lined it. The faint lines he'd seen on your hands ran much farther up your body, wrapping around your arm like a snake. There was a large one on your chest that disappeared under the fabric of your tank top, surrounded by smaller ones.
The most obvious scars were the three that traveled from just below your jawline to across your neck, like an animal had made it in a fight. They were deep, it looked like you should have had your throat slit. He understood now– the scarf and conservative clothing.
"I didn't know you were one, either." Remus paused. "Why are you doing this?"
"It's cold."
"Not the–" He stopped himself, leaning up against the tree behind him.
"You were alone." You finally looked up at home for more than a few seconds, holding eye contact as you set your fire poker stick down. You'd never seen Remus by himself, he always had one of his friends by his side causing a ruckus. "Your mates don't know about it, do they? Or else they’d be here with you."
Remus shifted uncomfortably, shaking his head. He wondered what time it was, how long he had until the sun would start to come up and the owls would be going off to wake students up. He blinked and brought himself back to the situation when he noticed you rummaging through your own bag, but didn't say anything.
You leaned forward held out a glass bottle, the liquid inside was a deep blue. He grabbed the neck hesitantly. "It's a Wolfsbane Potion."
He examined the bottle with wonder, looking back at you, remembering Slughorn's short ramble about the concoction one day in Potions. It was complicated to brew, more dangerous than anything, especially for werewloves themselves to make. There was no real use of it at Hogwarts, Slughorn said. "This is–"
"Hard to make," You said with a small smile, Remus hadn't expected it. "It's no cure, but it helps. Especially with the scars."
Remus felt guilty, you had gone out of your way to help him that night and he really had nothing to offer. He'd been a werewolf for a while but it didn't mean he had the hang of everything, in fact, there were some things he was still learning since there was no one to teach him over the years.
His eyes lit up with realization and he stuck a hand deep into his back, before pulling out two candy bars in silver wrappers. He extended his arm with a soft smile, offering one, "It's no cure, but it helps."
To his surprise, a giggle bubbled in your throat as you took it gingerly. You had a contagious laugh, it seemed, as he began to try and suppress his own to no avail.

detention dates
james potter x reader
word count: 3k
a/n: i wasn't sure if i was gonna keep this as one or put it into two really short parts but anyway hey im lillie
[…]
Professor Binns hovered by the door to his classroom, watching and checking their names off on a list he'd made with a content smile as students trudged inside with their books in hand. He was far too gleeful spending his Saturday afternoon with rule-breakers.
When you passed, you didn't offer him the satisfaction of a frown and instead shot him a knowing smirk– like you always did, well aware that it annoyed him and kept him on edge. His classroom was one of the worst places for detention, besides Filch. As much as the caretaker hated spending time with children, he still went out of his way to make them suffer.
Slughorn was much better, he allowed his students to get up and walk around. Though, it was only to clean the corners of his classroom, it was better than sitting in one place for an hour and not being allowed to get up. More often than not the attendees to his detention had to endure his constant blabbering about the Slug Club.
You put your wand in the cupboard by Professor Binns' desk like you always did, the newer students copying your actions. That was every teacher's rule– no wands allowed in detention, for obvious reasons.
"Detention? Again, y/l/n?" A voice behind you mocked with an exasperated sigh.
Upon realizing who was speaking, you turned around with a smile on your face and laughed. "Oh, you're one to talk. You're here too, aren't you?"
James offered a proud smirk as he reached over your shoulder and set his wand in the cupboard as well. He was a regular in detention, just like you. It didn't take you long to bond over the methods of your ways, and what you did wrong that landed you where you were and improved them for the next time around.
"What'd you do to land in here this time?" He teased as he followed you to your seat, sliding into the spot next to yours. He didn't have any books on his desk like you did, you were never sure if it was because he already had his homework done or because he just didn't do it.
"Filch is very protective of those fireworks he keeps locked in his office," You said with a smile, recalling being caught by the caretaker and his cat. Ms. Norris found you first, meowing up a storm until Filch came in looking a mix of annoyed and excited. "What'd you do? Actually, where's the rest of the Marauders?"
You'd noticed the rest of his posse hadn't followed him in as usual, in fact, you hadn't seen the rest of them in detention for a while. Remus, Peter, Sirius and James– they were a package deal, never separated. Until it came to detention, then they were forced apart. That's how your tradition of sitting next to James started.
While being moved, he didn't offer you a glance that lasted more than a second, his eyes flickered over you once before he sat down. James tucked his head in his arms, ready and willing to take a nap– there was really nothing for him to do.
He could hear you messing with some paper but didn't think anything of it, keeping his eyes closed until he could hear a soft scurrying of the desk in front of him. He lifted his head, watching as a paper rat jumped from each desk, past students until it landed on the shoulder of Severus Snape.
James began to smile as the rat tucked itself in Severus' hair and began to tug and pull at each strand harshly, or as harsh as a piece of paper could be. He wasn't sure if it would hurt him or not, but he could tell it bothered the boy as he writhed around in his seat and clamped a hand down on the back of his neck to catch it.
"Settle down, Snape," McGonagall chided, she looked up from her papers briefly to watch Severus rip some paper into pieces. Then, her eyes did a sweep around the room.
James averted his head down, as if the scratches on his desk were so interesting. Then, he looked over at you.
You had your head down as well, quill in hand like you'd been writing and not watching Severus as he jumped around in his seat. Your lips were pulled back in your mouth to suppress a smile that would give you away easily and would only give you another detention.
Feeling eyes on you, you looked at James and his approving expression. For the rest of the hour, the two of you tried to suppress your giggles as you sent dogs to other unsuspecting students in the classroom– mostly his friends. And Severus a few more times.
You didn't have a group of friends that you worked with like him, it was only you. He told you that being alone in these things was what made them go wrong most of the time.
"Someone had to take the blame for that jelly leg jinx on Snivellus," He said with a shrug, he wasn't too convincing. You thought the whole point of their group was to be in it together, take the fall together. Some brotherhood.
Detention started with the rapping of a wand at Binns' desk, like a gavel against hard wood in a courtroom. Some of the first-years jumped at the sudden sound, but it was well justified, as Binns wasn't the friendliest looking professor at Hogwarts.
"Oi, Professor Binns! You feeling alright?" James inquired, leaning forward in his seat with his smile, "You're looking a bit pale today. I can almost see right through you."
The professor didn't look too pleased with the joke. "Keep it up with the comments, Mister Potter, and you'll be earning yourself another detention."
You looked at James with a raised eyebrow as he leaned back in his seat, "Perhaps it's your running mouth that's been getting you into these detentions all by yourself?"
"Perhaps I've been doing it to spend time with my dear friend y/n." He tilted his head with a smile, playing it off.
You didn't realize until after the hour was over, that you hadn't talked to James outside of detention. You hardly considered him a friend. The two of you had a few things in common, possibly more, you'd never discussed things like that– the more personal parts of your lives. He was merely an acquaintance.
Not only had you not talked to him, you hardly saw him, either. Though, you'd never really sought him out other than in Quidditch, watching as he played for the Gryffindor team proudly.
That Monday, the thought hit you again while in the Great Hall, and you decided to take a look around for the familiar group of boys. Quite possibly the loudest ones throughout the room.
"Who you looking for?" Your friend, Misty, asked. Your expression gave away the impression that you were almost desperate to find him, your back straight trying to see above all the other heads at your table and eyebrows pulled together.
"What? No one," You dismissed without a second thought, turning around to see behind you. Your eyes widened when you spotted James. To your surprise, he was already strutting towards you.
When he sat down beside you, his legs were on the other side of the bench, away from the table his elbow rested on. You could tell he wasn't going to stay.
"What brings you to this side of the Great Hall, James?"  Your eyes flickered over his shoulder to the stone wall by the open doors, where the other three quarters of him stood, watching. They waved, Sirius' more ecstatic than the rest of them. You pretended not to notice the shove Remus gave as you gave them a finger wave in reply. "And why does it excite your mates so much?"
James turned around with an expression you couldn't see, but it was enough to make them stop fidgeting. Peter gave a nervous smile to suggest that everything was fine and they were absolutely not watching. When James turned back to you again, though, it was the same soft look he had before.
"We..." He paused, looking for the right words. "Needed your opinion on something... Would you rather use the Snow Cloud Jinx or the Bucket O'Bugs on someone?"
"Depends," You said slowly, "Who is it?"
"Snivellus."
"Bucket O'Bugs, easily." You took a sip of your pumpkin juice, still looking at James over the rim of the goblet. A lazy smile began to grow on his face, his eyes glistening in admiration. "Tell me how it goes."
"Will do, y/n. Thanks," He got up from the seat and nearly jogged down the aisle to his friends, who looked at him expectantly. He said something that made Sirius frown deeply, before pushing him in the direction in their usual spot. You found yourself wishing he'd stay.
Turning back to your table, with a glance upwards had realized Misty had watched the whole whole thing from across you. She had her head set in her palm, fingers curling up on her cheek meeting her taunting smirk.
Your face started to become warmer, and you stabbed the green bean on your plate with a fork, tilting your head. "You got something to say, Misty?"
"Oh, of course not," She said with a dramatic gasp, hand moving to her heart. "Not if it's going to jeopardize you and James' relationship."
With a roll of your eyes you plucked the green bean off of the end of your fork and threw it at her, aiming for her hair.
Though classes on Thursday had ended, detention was beginning. The ones who weren't forced to attend snickered from the sides of the halls at those who were. McGonagall stood inside by her desk keeping watch of every student that walked through the doors of the transfiguration classroom with her cat-like eyes.
The expression on her face admonished any troublemakers from trying anything, the pointed look moved from a boy in the front directly to you when you walked in. You smiled and slid your books down on the table in the center of the room, continuing towards the compartment on the wall to put your wand inside.
"Mister Black, Mister Lupin," McGonagall announced, her voice become quieter as she continued speaking. You turned your head to see the two boys sitting next to each other, Remus trying to suppress his goofy smile. "I suggest you move before I see fit that I move you myself."
Her comment provoked scattered giggles throughout the room, one of them coming from you as you walked back to your desk. Sirius let out an overdramatic sigh as he moved up one desk, the one next to yours, but closer to the other seat that wasn't taken at your table.
"Oi, there you are!" Peter exclaimed, looking at the door where James dawdled. His tie was loose and he blinked slowly, it was quite possible if he didn't sit down soon he would fall asleep where he stood.
He mumbled something and sat down at your table between you and Sirius at the desk beside him, without a word. You didn't question it, instead pulling out a piece of parchment and began writing your paper Slughorn assigned for potions.
You were relieved when time passed and you realized that James wasn't a snorer, but, he was still a drooler. His head laid on the cold concrete of the desk with his head facing you and a pool of saliva formed at his lips, you knew it was barely comfortable enough to fall asleep on.
His arms were on his lap, not supporting his head with any cushioning. As you looked at him your mouth pulled to one side as you debated on doing something about it or not, but there was really no magic to help.
After setting your quill down, you peeled the grey sweater you had on off your body, leaving you in just a white dress shirt and usual y/h tie. The sudden action caught the attention of some students in the room, but you hadn't noticed as you began to bundle it up. You gently lifted James' head up, slipping it underneath him.
A second passed, studying him before you pulled the thin, crooked glasses of his face and set them on the desk. Satisfied, you softly smiled to yourself and looked back at your paper.
As the last few minutes came to, tufts of parchment paper hit James repeatedly. He began to stir awake, lifting his head from the cushion he didn't remember falling asleep with.
He sat up straight and wiped his mouth, un-wadding the mass of soft, grey fabric to reveal to himself that it was a sweater. He looked to his left where Sirius was smirking and nodded past him, and James turned his head to look at you.
An owl hooted from the tallest cabinet behind McGonagall, signaling the end of their extended stay inside her classroom. Stools began to screech against the concrete floor as the teenagers began to rush towards the front of the room to fetch their wands.
"G'morning, sleepyhead," You said, now standing and leaning against the table while looking at James. "Got a bit of bedhead there."
His hand subconsciously rubbed his head, pushing the hair down in an attempt to fix it. He gave you a lazy smile, "Yeah, somnium doesn't mess around."
"Someone hexed you?"
"Malfoy," He huffed, standing up. He shrugged the annoyance off when he handed you your sweater with a large, wet stain on it's stomach. "I think you'll be needing this."
You sighed dramatically, holding it close to your chest. "'Course, and I'll be savoring the saliva of James Potter for the rest of my days."
"Is that what you girls do?"
The classroom began to clear and you walked to the front with him, grabbing your wands. You looked at the back of the room, seeing a glimpse of three boys rushing out of the room.
"I think your friends abandoned you, James."
He looked up from the ground as he walked with you towards the door, eyes scanning the room only to see a few scurrying first years collecting their things. He pushed his glasses back up his nose and set an arm on your shoulders. "Not abandoned, I'm with you."
You tried to smile not too hard, but couldn't help it, especially as he continued in a proposal of spending the rest of the day with each other. You were already together, of course. His words.
"You sure he's gonna walk down here?" You asked, standing behind the corner of one of the T shaped halls in the dungeon, watching as James kept his wand up to try and keep the Bucket O'Bugs in place.
"'Course I am, he always comes down here for his daily sulking." He slowly pulled his wand down, seeing the Bucket was steadied in the air and waiting for someone to pass underneath it. He looked at you, shoving his wand in his pocket. "What? Have I ever let you down?"
"Too many times."
James scoffed playfully, shaking his head and backing up next to you to not get seen.
You peaked around the corner, only to be pulled back almost instantly into his chest. He had an arm around your back and stepped in front of you. "What was that for?"
"You're going to get us caught!" He whisper-shouted, looking around the corner just as you had been. Your mouth opened, feigning offensiveness.
"You're doing the exact same thing!"
"I'm better at it!" James pulled himself back with a smile. "He's coming."
The two of you reeled back and stayed silent as you kept your eyes on the bucket floating high in the air, waiting for it's victim. It was just a few seconds before Severus was walking underneath it, and it began to pour.
He let out shouts and curses as he jumped around, brushing them off and opening the bottom of his shirt to keep them from crawling down his back. He stomped on them and kept shaking his arms and his hair.
Severus looked at the two of you when he was done writhing. You were laughing so hard you had to lean on one another to stay standing, tears we're almost brought to your eyes as you tucked your head into James' chest.
"You!" He began to stomp, getting closer. He pulled out his wand and stood as if he was going to duel the two of you. You laughed even harder.
"Mister Potter! Miss y/l/n!" A voice shouted, your laughter grew quieter as you turned around to see Slughorn standing with his fists against his hips. He looked at the pile of bugs scattering throughout the hall and then to the boy who still had a brown lump crawling around on the top of his head. "I think what the two of you have done has earned the two of you a Friday detention. Snape, come with me."
Looking at James as they left just made you burst into more giggles, glancing back at the mess you made.
"Let's leave Filch to that, yeah?" He said, glancing over his shoulder and gesturing for you to start walking with him down the way you came. You did, standing at his side as comfortable silence washed over you.
James turned his head to you, noticing how your eyes sweeped over every curve of concrete on the ceiling and walls though you had seen it hundreds of times before. He began to smile nervously, "y/n."
When you looked at him a brief panic set in his stomach, your eyes twinkling with mischief and happiness.
"Would you like to go to Hogsmeade tomorrow? With me?" His hand balled up the side of his robe, relaxing when you began to smile and stopped in your tracks, turning your body to him.
Your head tilted, "James, I would love to, but..." You could feel the doubts settle in his brain and you took a deep breath, "We have detention."
James broke out into a smile, head dropping to the ground before looking up again. He took a step forward. "I'd prefer to skip."
"Just for me?" You inquired as he took a hold of your hand.
"Just for you."
