I'd like to see what San Diego looked like at the beginning of the 19th century, because that's where the story took my characters.
So, all that remains is editing and translation (@aragarna, I'll bring you something early next week 🙏🌹🥺).
P. S. I haven't written a long story for a hundred years without a chapter-by-chapter publication.
P. S. I really have two versions in my head. This one is basic, and the 2nd one was inspired by a fanvid by @allerod, and there will be a wreath of sonnets like Diego’s POV (and his autobiography), and that will come later.

Been thinking about Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and what makes Death the Wolf such an effective villain, and like… character design and voice acting is certainly doing a lot there, don't get me wrong, but I think there's something else at play.
Death is the most terrifying character in Puss in Boots, because he's the only one playing the genre straight.
The premise of the Shrek films has always been that they're normal, modern people living in wacky fairytale land.
The evil king uses his magic mirror as a dating app. The fairy godmother uses business cards to contact her clients. Her workers consider unionising over their lack of dental plan.
Puss in Boots 1 kinda broke the mould in that— while there are plenty of modern elements to how the characters act and how their world works— it's more specifically intended to be characters from the world Zorro living in wacky fairytale land. But the point still stands.
The aim of the Shrek films and spin-offs is to subvert common fairytale tropes for comedic effect. What if the princess fell for the ogre? What if Prince Charming was an entitled dick? What if Goldilocks teamed up with the three bears and started a crime family?
But Death? Death, for the most part, isn't playing that game.
No character questions why he doesn't just kill Puss outright. There are no gags about him being inconvenienced by Jack Horner losing so many men. Nobody makes any self-aware fourth wall breaking jokes about why he bothers with the whole whistling thing.
We all know why he does the whistling thing. It's the same reason why Little Red Riding Hood has to go through the whole "what big eyes/ears/teeth you have, Grandma" rigamarole. The same reason why the wolf takes care to knock before blowing the little pigs' houses down.
The Wolf is scary because he's the only actual fairytale creature in this entire setting. He's not bound by rules of logic or common sense, or his own will, he's bound by the narrative.
And that's also why he backs down at the end.
The first time he and Puss fight, in the bar, Puss is arrogant. The second time, in the Cave, Puss is scared out of his wits. It's the third time, on the wishing star, that Puss learns his lesson. Of course the Wolf backs down after that! The rules say he has to.
But, on another level, there is also the issue of Puss realising that he wants more from his life than just to be a legend.
They say "legends never die", but the most famous part of any given legend tends to be the story of how the hero finally bites the dust.
And "he was such a great fighter that Death himself had to kill him off, personally!" is just the sort of ending that would fit the legend Puss has constructed around himself. In a sense, the Wolf is giving Puss exactly what he proclaims to want— the chance to go down in history.
Puss realising he doesn't want that anymore is the catalyst for sending the Wolf away. Through his own egotistical and reckless attitude, he turned himself into a story and thus summoned a narrative device. Only by choosing to value his life over the legend is he able to escape that trap.
The Wolf's defeat is both the natural ending of the story that he and Puss have been playing out since the film began, and a rejection of the natural ending to the story Puss has been telling about himself since he first became the hero of San Ricardo.

It's in his eyes
Tumblr media
Jake Seresin x Y/N Trace
Summary: you met Jake at a masked party and got lost in his eyes, falling for him, hard. And Jake, well he was a lovesick puppy too after the party.
A/N: just look at the man's eyes, got distracted by the gif everytime I was trying to write. And that cute face
Tumblr media
"Y/N, can you please stop talking about your zorro, I'm actually glad I was sick during the Halloween party, can we please enjoy the beach? I actually want to enjoy quality time with my little sister."
"Sorry Nat, it's just, he was so perfect, his eyes..." and you got lost again in the memory of a couple of nights ago.
You had just arrived in San Diego, following the footsteps of your bigger sister Natasha. You both had the dream to become a Naval aviator, but she was the only one achieving the dream, with your 4'11 you didn't pass the requirements. Still not wanting to bury your dream to work with planes, you became flight technician, the best one existing. So this you got transferred too to San Diego, getting reunited with your sister.
After getting settled in in your shared appartement with your sister she had a week off, starting your quality time with the annual Halloween party at the Hard Deck. Of course Nat being Nat, she got sick on her first day off, something she always had, like her body knew when it didn't need to perform.
Since it was a masked party, she still insisted you to go and have fun. Which you definitely had. Being a part of the Trace family meant the best costumes, or in this case you went as a pumpkin, a cute one. It had a little puffy orange body and the eye mask as the top of the pumpkin.
During the party you had met this Zorro by remarking he was very fake for not wearing the moustache and like that you two got talking throughout the whole night. But your breath got taking away by his piercing beautiful green eyes with this slight darker green shade on the edge. He had also had a good physique, but it were his eyes you got distracted by. Both liking the mystery, talking about everything except your names and occupation.
When you got outside and sat under the light, there was this comfortable silence between the two of you staring in each other's eyes, getting lost in them.
"I can get lost in your eyes" you had blurted out loud.
Jake's POV
"Jake can you please stop talking about your pumpkin, you should've asked her number, idiot. You know there's a big chance you're never going to see her again." Coyote complained to his friend who was whining over and over again about this girl he met a couple of days ago on the Halloween party. Hangman was normally not the type for relationships, but he has never been this head over heels for a girl.
He couldn't get her out of his head, every second was dedicated to her. She was so small compared to him, looking adorable in that cute pumpkin costume, remarking him on his incomplete costume with that sweet voice. And oh those beautiful big brown orbs. She had something said about his eyes, but he couldn't give a compliment back, he felt too lost looking at her, adoring the sight in front of him. So he let his body speak as he cupped her small face in his hands and kissed her softly. He kissed her over and over again in between talking and staring in each other's eyes until she had to leave.
"Jake? Bagman? Hello, earth speaking!" Jake snapped out of his thoughts, "man, you've got it bad." Rooster said while patting him on his back. "But did you see her complete face? Tell me you at least got her name?"
"No" Jake whispered softly "but I can recognise her eyes out of a thousand."
"Do I really have to go with you?" You nagged at your sister.
"Never thought I would say this, but I think you're in love man. Phoenix is lucky she has to miss your whining."
Tumblr media
"Yes, stop being such a baby. You're coming with me, meet my coworkers, maybe you will work on one of their planes in the near future. Stop whining and woman up."
"Okay" you give up, Nat won this battle.
"Jake, shut up, will you!" You hear a male voice say while entering the Hard Deck.
"Didn't miss that while catching up with you," Nat whispered. "Everyone, this is my little sister, Y/N, she just transferred here, she's the best technician existing."
"Wait, there are two Traces? And there is a cute one?" Coyote remarked.
"Coyote! She's off-" before she could finish, Jake had woken up from his pity party he was throwing for himself.
"Pumpkin?" Jake had looked up at the word 'cute' and not believing his eyes that his adorable pumpkin had landed in front of him, like an angel descending from heaven.
"Zorro without the moustache?" You had recognized those beautiful green anywhere, your heartbeat rised with seeing him, felling a little bit dizzy. Within the second Jake had wrapped you in a tight hug, never wanting to let go of you. You wiggled yourself out of the needing embrace to start kissing him. You had missed him like crazy.
"Bagman? What? My sister? Y/N, no!" Both your and Jake's action leaving your sister shocked. She never guessed the sweet man you described was Hangman.
"So your sister is the love of Hangman's life, didn't see that one coming." Rooster said with a small laugh.
Jake had snapped out of the world where only you and him existed and stopped kissing, so he could tug you to your sister. "I'm going to do this the right way. Phoenix, can I take your sister out on a date?"
"What no, stay away from her! You're not gonna corrupt her!"
"Come on Phoenix, Bagman here has been sulking ever since the party. Believe us when we say that he's in love with your sister." Rooster was surprisingly defending Hangman for once.
"Phoenix, look at the bright side, your sister can learn him some manners." Bob added in Hangman's defense.
"No! Go date him yourself, I expected better from you Bob."
"Have you looked at him? Hangman has never been like this for someone, look at the lovesick puppy and look at your sister." Coyote was right, no one had seen Hangman swoon for a girl. The softness appearing in his eyes when he was talking about her, the way he was genuinely regretting letting you go that night. He would have laughed in your face when someone would've said two weeks ago he would be thinking now about buying a house with someone, going on the cheesiest dates, wanting to marry her and having kids with her. And right now he didn't want to think about anything else. If it was possible he would do it all at the same time.
"You have my permission, but don't make me regret this Hangman, she's my little sister."
"Y/N, would you like to go on an official date with me, like right now?"
"Yes, yes!" You were smiling from ear to ear.
"Nat, you said I might work on one if their planes, I guess you were right." You smirked at your sister and running off quickly with Jake to the beach.

I don’t usually know exactly where I’m going.
Wherever I’m staying, I look at a map before I run, and point myself in a direction. I have a good sense of direction anyhow, and in this daty and age it would take a significant amount of work on my part to get truly lost. It’s easy to remember where you came from when you run, too, noticing everything around you, shop signs and streetlights and the place you have to nearly jump over the buckle in the sidewalk. There’s no option to be buried in some post about various fandom crimes when you’re clipping down the street at 6 miles an hour, so I’m not.
In the early morning hour, only rarely have I encountered anything that might be called a crowd. Even in the London financial district, most of my companions were pigeons and flower sellers setting up shop. Today, there’s no one, not even the odd dog walker, which does strike me, but, then again, I’m zooming through the historic Old Town of San Diego, and I’m not actually certain anyone lives here.
But people did, even before it became the first place Europeans dropped anchor as stayed awhile in California. It’s not even a place for the American West--the history of this place is older still by at least fifty years. You can see the Spanish in every corner of this place, and I think of being a toddler, and of watching Zorro, that old black and white show in reruns on my screen. I can see Don Diego de la Vega standing in a tiny patio in front of an adobe house, even as my lap marker beeps in my ear.
The secret to being utterly alonel, I have often found, is doing things other people don’t want to do. Old San Diego is opened up only for me, parrots screeching overhead, the cemetery the only bodies around. I’ve seen this in Boston, in London, in places all over the world, looping quickly through historic markers and old byways. I always love the feel of it, the way history seems frozen for me, here, because I’m running fast enough to catch it. I stalk it in the early morning hours the way someone might stalk a deer.
I don’t have a good conclusion for this, because there isn’t one. I didn’t learn a lesson, i didn’t have a thought. I just have the sound of my feet on the pavement, and the drip of sweat on my back, and the peace of a moment without people in a crowded world.

So I watched all of the new One Piece.
Buggy is just as inexplicably omnipresent in the show as on tumblr. How. Why. You were supposed to be in one episode, my man. Did like his big-top, though.
All of the Straw Hats are so cute. I just wanted to pinch all their cheeks. Especially Luffy. Everyone's casting was amazing.
Alvida was so cute. I was glad they let her keep being chubby.
I enjoyed how much Sanji bombed every time he hit on a lady. Made him pathetic, without needing to make him a complete creep.
I was a bit surprised the series gave Koby command of a sub so quick (wink). But Helmeppo getting his dumb hair cut from Zorro was great. I was also surprised they never mentioned Dragon, despite him being teased and the whole arc with Garp. I was expecting at least one "you're just like your father". Bit disappointed in there being romance included. It was cute, but shipping is supposed to be our job. Oda-san himself said No Romance In One Piece.
I was a bit confused as to why they killed off Merry. I get that they're trying to be a bit more grounded, and boy howdy do people bounce back from nutso wounds in the manga, but it just makes the Merry-Go's fate even more tragic, when it was the favorite ship of a dead guy, rather than just a random thing he built.
Also a bit nervous that they added a whole ship-building town already, when Water Seven is my favorite arc and deserves ALL the hype, even if its at least three seasons away. Given Netflix's average number of seasons being 2.5, I'm probably never going to see my cyborg Husbando. Maybe they'll release the designs, even if they don't get that far. Speaking of the costuming, it was great, and it'll be fun to do a rewatch just to see the work they put in to all the background details. The number of fishmen alone was pretty impressive.
Also, the child actors were pretty good. Seeing all the baby Straw Hats was adorable.
It'll be interesting to see if this gains much traction with viewers outside the anime bubble. It would be great if this was the thing that finally helped One Piece cross over.
Anyways, hope the strikers win everything they ask for, and we get a season 2! Onward to Chopper and Robin!

Anteriormente el Boxing Day era conocido como Stephen’s Day.
Alemania

Boasting postcards from a friend of mine🌵🥰
A modern San Francisco postcard, three vintage ones from rare black and white Argentinean set and one from the famous color Walt Disney set, the same age as WDZ.
Tumblr media
Few people know that since childhood I have loved sets of postcards depicting cities, actors, etc. And now I have two dreams: to make a notebook for myself with these postcards (I make notebooks with my own hands), and in the future to buy complete sets of postcards (preferably in perfect condition) dedicated to WDZ and Tyrone Power's Zorro.
Tumblr media
And in a roundabout way this winged man, set in silver, finally flew to me. This is a painted miniature on labradorite and a gift from the artist, who is my old friend @letmeinimafairy.
