I decided I needed another Volodymyr Zelenskyy figure to add to my other ones, so I just ordered this Volodymyr. I do believe it's one of him on his Zmiinyi Island visit. I will take a pic of all of them after he arrives.

Daily Wrap Up June 30, 2022
Under the cut: Russian troops have left Snake Island (of “Russian warship go fuck yourself” fame, but Ukraine and Russia disagree about why they left; Ukraine has severed diplomatic relations with Syria after Syria recognized the independence of the pro-Russia separatist-controlled Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic; Britain will provide another 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion) of military support to Ukraine; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada is working on finalizing a deal to provide Ukraine with 39 armoured combat support vehicles.
(Short one tonight, I had a busy day, but I got the highlights <3)
“Russian troops have left Snake Island in the Black Sea, the Ukrainian Armed Forces said Thursday, after they carried out what they said was a "successful" operation.
The small but strategic territory was the scene of one of the opening salvos of the war in Ukraine, with demands from a Russian warship calling for the Ukrainian defenders to surrender, who boldly replied with "Russian warship, go f*** yourself."
Known as Zmiinyi Ostriv in Ukrainian, Snake Island lies around 30 miles (48 kilometers) off the coast of Ukraine and is close to the sea lanes leading to the Bosphorus and Mediterranean.
Moscow had never laid claim to Snake Island before this year, and it's a long way from any part of the Russian mainland. It's more than 180 miles from Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, and so there is no geographical or historical basis for Russia to claim it now.
On Monday, the Ukrainian military said it hit a second missile system on the island, as well as multiple Russian personnel in their efforts to keep them at bay. In a short post on Telegram on Thursday the Operation Command South of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that "the enemy hastily evacuated the remnants of the garrison in two speedboats and probably left the island."
Satellite images of the island taken on Thursday by Maxar Technologies showed that Russian military forces have left the island.
However, Russia gave a slightly different narrative of the events on the island. Russian army spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at a briefing that its forces left the island "as a gesture of goodwill."
He added that "the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation finished fulfilling the assigned tasks in Snake Island and withdrew the garrison that had been operating there."
Konashenkov intimated that the removal of Russian troops should allow an easing for the passage of grain, "this solution will prevent Kyiv from speculating on an impending grocery crisis citing the inability to export grain due to total control of the northwestern part of the Black Sea by Russia."”
-via CNN (this is part of a much longer article)
While the Russian forces have withdrawn from Snake Island in the Black Sea, it may be “too early” for Ukraine to establish an outpost there, said the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Military’s Southern Command, Natalia Humenyuk.
Humenyuk reported the island remains engulfed in heavy smoke as explosions continue. Although the Ukrainian military saw Russian troops evacuate using speedboats, Humenyuk said investigation needs to take place into possible “diversion tools left behind” before claiming back the island.
“Our forces haven’t landed on the island yet,” she added clarifying it is not clear if Russian troops withdrew completely. “We cannot state that they all withdrew. But we hope that they had enough sense to do that." Humenyuk suggested the Russian military set anti-air missile systems and radar station on fire “to cover their tracks.”
“As soon as they understood all these systems were being targeted by us effectively and could not serve them anymore, they realized they had to fold their outpost and get out," she added. “We have to monitor their behavior in terms of their ship groupings and the use of other forces. It is too early for us to form an outpost on the Snake island. We have to finish the investigation into the result of the military operation."
Russian military command justified their withdrawal from the island on Thursday “as a gesture of goodwill.”

“Ukraine announced Thursday that it has severed diplomatic relations with Syria after Damascus on Wednesday recognized the independence of the pro-Russia separatist-controlled Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the decision of the Syrian Arab Republic to recognize the so-called 'independence' of the temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine,” the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
“We consider this decision to be an unfriendly act against Ukraine, an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state, and a gross violation of Ukrainian law, the UN Charter, and the fundamental norms and principles of international law," it added. Syria is the only country aside from Russia to formally recognize the independence of the breakaway regions.
“In response to this unfriendly act, Ukraine declares the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without the severance of consular relations, in accordance with Article 2 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations done in Vienna on 24 April 1963,” Ukraine's foreign ministry also said, adding that it will impose a trade embargo, as well as other sanctions, on Syria.”-via CNN

“Britain will provide another 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion) of military support to Ukraine, the British government said on Wednesday, as NATO branded Russia the biggest "direct threat" to Western security.
The funding will go towards boosting Ukraine's defence capabilities, including air defence systems, uncrewed aerial vehicles, new electronic warfare equipment and thousands of pieces of equipment for Ukrainian soldiers.”-via Reuters
~
“At the conclusion of the NATO leaders summit in Madrid, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada is working on finalizing a deal to provide Ukraine with 39 armoured combat support vehicles (ACSVs). They had been destined for the Canadian Army and were in the process of being delivered, but instead will be diverted.
"The light armoured vehicles we will be sending over will be extremely effective," Trudeau told reporters as the summit ended. "We're just glad to help and we're going to continue to look and respond to things that they need."”-via CBC

Russian forces drop phosphorus bombs on Zmiinyi Island
The leadership of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation does not even adhere to its own statements, which declare a ‘gesture of goodwill’. Today, at around 18:00, from the Belbek airfield, two Su-30 aircraft of the Air Force of the Russian Federation twice launched air strikes using phosphorus bombs on Zmiinyi Island, where they allegedly ‘completed their tasks’,” Zaluzhny wrote.
He stressed that everyone who talks about agreements with Russia should know these facts.

another note: if you argue that "war is not the answer! ukraine should solve the invasion diplomatically!", you:
a) show your ignorance about 8 years of fruitless one-sided attempts to find a diplomatic resoultion, during which russia hasn't fullfilled a single commitment and ukrainian army was left in situation when they were constantly shot at but weren't allowed to respond (not to mention not being able to rescue ukrainian citizens on the occupied territories being thrown in torture camps)
b) show your ignorance about how diplomacy works at all. the way the military campaign unravels dictates how the diplomatic negotiations will go. the more russian army suffers, the more likely their command will show "gestures of good will" like zmiinyi island.
and no, ceding ukrainian territory is not an option. russia is commiting a genocide of ukrainian people, their goal is to erase every trace of our people. by pressuring us to give up land you are supporting the genocide of ukrainian people. by pressuring your government to stop sending us weapons you are supporting the genocide of ukrainian people.

Debris clearance continues, at the moment (July 1, morning), the bodies of 19 dead people have been found, including two children.
The attack took place in the middle of the night when people were sleeping in their apartments.
Russia used the same missile that was used to hit the Kremenchuk shopping center. It looks like this:
Tumblr media
These missiles are very old, cheap and highly inaccurate because they are not designed to accurately hit ground targets. They are intended for use against aircraft carriers and carrier battle groups. These missiles are self-guided to the largest target in the radius on which they were launched. So high-rise apartment buildings and shopping centers are bound to be hit by this missile if it was directed to the area where such buildings exist i.e. any town.
So russia knows for sure that many civilians will be killed, this is their goal. Death and terror. This attack, most likely, was revenge for the Zmiinyi Island liberated yesterday. Russian scum can only fight against unarmed civilians. And honestly, it seems like they have the license to do so, to launch terrorist attacks every single day. Nothing stops them.
Just imagine waking up to 9/11 every single day. Ukrainians have been living like this for 4 months and there is no end to this madness. None of us knows who will survive another day and who will not.

24.02.2023
Today I woke up at 5 am and had a panic attack. Because exactly one year ago, on 24.02.2022 I woke up too at 5 am in my flat in Kharkiv because of explosions. In less then 15 seconds I've grabbed my coat, boots, backpack with documents (which I packed several days ago) and Mr.Rat. I have only one thought "The war has started". I've never been so afraid in my whole life before. There was a lot of talking about war for months before. We discuss if the war will start and how it will be. Because since 2014 Russia started a war in Donbass region and annexed Crimea, so we were contemplating if it will be like it? It was nothing like it. First night I've spent inside a subway station, so did a lot of citizens from my district due to the fact that not a lot of shelters were fully functional. The sound is spreading on further distances underground, so whole night I've been listening to the sounds of battles in the northern part of Kharkiv region. Only on third day Russian troops reached Kharkiv - on 12 panzer cars - that was all that left from the tank division. They were wiped out till the end of day. And after that rocket attacks and heavy shelling started. Russians understood that they can't take city by storm, so they've decided to destroy it completely. The shelling doesn't stopped till now and probably will last till the end of war. Their targets are civilian houses, living quarters, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, shopping malls, industrial objects, historical objects - pretty much everything. In the spring of 2022 a lot of people choose to live inside subway stations, because it is safer and because some of them have no other place to live - because the largest and most populated living district of Kharkiv - Severnaya Saltovka - was basically destroyed. There isn't any houses that aren't damaged, most of them damaged permanently. Thousands of people lost everything they had. The problem is that Kharkiv situated very close to Russian border. From Kharkiv to Belgorod is only 40 kilometers and the flying time of a rocket is 43 seconds. If the rocket is launched there is no time to seek shelter - you can only hope that you are not the target. If you're inside, you can try to hide in bathroom or in corridor, and if you are outside, you need to fall to the ground immediately - and pray for the best. The audacity of Russia propaganda - they were talking about taking whole Ukraine in the first four days. In the morning of 24.02.22 russian news channels already were telling that large Ukrainian cities - Kharkiv, Odessa, Sumy - are "fallen without a fight and occupied", while russian troops and tanks were burning on their way to Kharkiv and Kyiv. Battle for Mariupol had lasted till May, 2022, and in the process the city was almost completely destroyed by Russian missiles. Suggestively more them 40 000 people were killed. Thousands of now-orphaned children were illegally transported to Russia. You can say that it is not really a war, it is genocide. Since the beginning of war Russia was able to occupy only one regional center - Kherson, which was freed till the end of year 2022. "Russian warship, go fuck yourself" ("Русский военный корабль, иди нахуй" ) was the answer of Ukrainian soldier on Zmiinyi (Snake)Island to the commander of russian cruiser "Moskva" which demanded to surrender or be destroyed. P.S. Later Snake Island returned under the control of Ukraine and cruiser Moskva sank after being shot by Ukrainian rocket Neptun in April 2022

Leuke Island
Sometimes when you are researching you end up going off the beaten path. This is one of the reasons I love urban fantasy games - the real world is filled with history, myth, and folklore, which is absolutely EVERYWHERE once you start to see it.
While researching the Patreon post on Macaria, I ended up tangenting into the reading about the Blessed Isles on which the ancient Greek dead reside. Unlike the way Planescape and Pathfinder interpret all afterlives as taking place in other dimensions, the ancient Greeks believed at various points in time the Islands were physical places people could travel to (although at other times, they were also part of the Underworld proper). Those islands have been placed everywhere from Sicily, to The Canary Islands, to the Azores, to Bermuda.
So as I’m reading the Wikipedia page on Elysium, I see a bit where Achilles has been linked with an actual island in the Black Sea. I dig this, because I’ve been researching Pontus for a different project and I feel like people underestimate how far north Hellenic culture made it in Eastern Europe. Since I’m on wikipedia, I hover over the link to get a preview of the page and since I saw the Greek name I ignore the title and go straight to the text. Sounds neat, there was a temple, it was a major religious site for Black Sea colonists, and formal worship of Achilles is not something I’ve seen a lot of (albeit, I’m not a classicist).
Then I look at the island’s English name. And I fucking start swearing.
You see, I knew this island. Anyone who’s paying attention to the Ukraine war probably knows this island. Its proper modern name is Zmiinyi, but in English it is often called Snake Island.
Yeah, that’s the island where Ukrainian soldiers told a Russian warship to go fuck itself. That very same tiny little island where a bunch of Ukrainians made their stand against Russian aggression - that was once holy ground for Achilles.
While I definitely have a headcanon about what that island is like in Scion’s World, I’m not about to gamify the conflict in Ukraine because that would be a millions different types of crass. It’s staying firmly inside my brain. But I couldn’t not share this. And I also can’t get the image of Achilles giving a Russian warship the finger out of my head.

On National Flag Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the solemn ceremony of raising the blue-yellow flag.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the presence of the Head of State, the country's largest flag, located on the territory of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II, was raised in Kyiv. The solemn raising was accompanied by a military orchestra. The National Anthem was played. The honor guard company marched.
During the speech, the President noted that every year, shortly before Independence Day, the Ukrainian people pay tribute to one of their most important symbols and one of the greatest shrines - the National Flag of Ukraine.
"The combination of two colors that we incredibly love, cherish and will never exchange for any other. We will never recognize foreign colors on our land and in our sky. And we are always ready to defend our blue-yellow flag," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The Head of State announced a moment of silence to commemorate the heroes who gave their lives for these colors.
The President noted that Ukraine's flag has gone through a lot and was present at many places. In particular, it was brought to the parliament on the day of the declaration of independence of Ukraine, it was in space together with Leonid Kadeniuk, at the North Pole with our polar explorers, it conquered Everest. The blue-yellow flag was also a star on the stages in Istanbul, Stockholm and Turin, when the Ukrainians who won the Eurovision wrapped themselves in it, it triumphantly rose above the flags of other countries at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sydney, Beijing, London and many others cities of the world.
"It also attended the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, when during the semi-final match between the USSR and GDR national football teams, Danylo Myhal, a representative of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, ran onto the field. Dressed in vyshyvanka and carrying a blue-yellow flag, he danced the hopak. He always dreamed of transferring this flag to Ukraine. Today it finally happened. And this legendary flag will be raised today at the opening of the Ukrainian football championship," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The President also emphasized that the blue and yellow colors were on the armor and near the hearts of Ukrainian warriors when they liberated Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Mariupol and dozens of other cities in 2014, as well as the Kyiv region, Chernihiv region, Sumy region and our other occupied lands in 2022.
"It witnessed the birth of a world masterpiece and heard firsthand where the "Russian warship" should go. Now everyone is in their place: our flag has returned to Zmiinyi Island, and the "Moskva" cruiser has followed the given course," said the Head of State.
The President expressed belief that the blue-yellow flag will fly again where it should be by right.
"In all temporarily occupied cities and villages of Ukraine. Occupied - temporarily. Fly - forever. In Melitopol, above Peremohy Square. Where there can be no flag of those who lose the war. There will be blue and yellow. In Kherson, above Svobody Square. There can be no flag of those who do not know what freedom is. There will be blue and yellow," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President emphasized that the Ukrainian flag will again be on Azovsky Avenue in Berdyansk, on Zelena Alley in Skadovsk, over the NPP in Enerhodar and over the Kakhovska HPP, on the Adzhyholsky lighthouse and on Savur-Mohyla, on the shores of Siverskyi Donets, Kalmius, near the Oleshky sands.
"There cannot be a flag of those who hear these names for the first time. There will be blue and yellow. And in Crimea. In Yalta, in Kerch, Dzhankoy, Simferopol, on Ai-Petri. Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar flags. And no matter how someone tries to twist history, exactly these colors are historically associated with Crimea," the Head of State emphasized.
The blue-yellow flag will also be in Lutuhyne, over the Taras Shevchenko House of Culture, in Lysychansk, over the Volodymyr Sosiura Palace of Culture, because there cannot be another flag next to these names, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is convinced.
"Our flag will fly again in Milove, near the Bell of Memory and the memorial to the victors of Nazism. And it will be in Severodonetsk, next to the monument to the Cossacks. There should not be a flag of those who have nothing to do with either the first or the second. There will be blue and yellow. Our Ukrainian flag. Our amulet. Amulet of Ukraine. From land to the skies! Happy National Flag Day," the President summed up.
According to the Constitution, the national symbols of Ukraine are the National Flag, the National Coat of Arms, and the National Anthem of Ukraine. The National Flag is a flag made of two equal-sized horizontal stripes of blue and yellow colors.

My next post in support of Ukraine is:
Next site, Lviv National Agrarian University in Lviv, Lviv Oblast. It originated in the village of Dubliany, outside of Lviv, in 1852, when the Galacia Agricultural Society bought a farm there & created a private School of Village Agriculture. It was later turned into an Agricultural College, then in 1901, it became a university. During the Polish-Ukrainian War, Nov 1918 to July 1919, the campus was destroyed, so it was moved to Lwów (now Lviv). Sadly, it has just been damaged again by muscovy strikes.

The Russian-backed leader of annexed Crimea, Sergei Askyonov, blamed Kyiv for yesterday’s attack, which allegedly hit a platform owned by a Crimean oil and gas company. Three people were wounded and a search was under way for seven workers, he said on Monday.
A Russian senator for Crimea, Olga Kovitidi, told the Interfax news agency:

“US Attorney General Merrick Garland made an unannounced trip to Ukraine on Tuesday, where he met Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova.
The two will discuss efforts by the United States and other countries to help Ukraine "identify, apprehend, and prosecute those individuals involved in war crimes" in Ukraine, according to a statement from a Justice Department official.
Garland had previously announced a trip to Europe scheduled for this week to meet with European leaders and discuss their joint efforts to combat Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Garland is the most recent top-ranking US official to travel to Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv in April, and a congressional delegation led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell traveled to Kyiv just a few weeks later.
Appearing alongside Venediktova inside Ukraine, Garland said he was there to “express the unwavering support of the United States for the people of Ukraine in the midst of the unprovoked and unjust Russian invasion.”
Garland also said he wanted to discuss actions the United States “is taking to assist the Ukrainian authorities in holding accountable those responsible for the atrocities, for the war crimes that the entire world has seen.”
“The United States is sending an unmistakable message – there is no place to hide. We and our partners will pursue every avenue available to make sure that those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable,” Garland said.”-via CNN
