Big fan of the newest crop of Barbie mermaids!

Everybody is talking about the gorgeous Odile sculpt for good reason, but I wasn't truly desperate for these dolls until I noticed that they have the Belly Button body torso instead of the current standard Barbie torso like previous mermaids have! No idea how Angel Kent managed to bring this body back into rotation but I sure hope to see it on other dolls soon!

Initially I planned to just reroot her because her hair (while saran) was way too short and choppy for me, but I was too inspired by the beautiful sculpting of the tail and bra, which are so reminiscent of other iconic Barbie mermaid lines, to leave it at just that. Eventually I'll do all four of them like this, but I'm still waiting on the other Odile to ship and I have to find a replacement head for the green Millie because I hate the closed mouth Millie sculpt lol

Reroot was done with six different shades of saran hair mixed into multiple different blends in order to create a smooth gradient from purple to light pink

I hate the stiff, stubby pose of current standard Barbie arms so I dipped those in boiling water and reshaped them to have a more elegant pose lol

For her body I settled on painting over sections of her bra with watered down pearlescent acrylic to give them more of a shimmer effect, and drybrushed her tail with the same acrylic The sleeves are made from transparent vinyl in a similar style to the Barbie Mermaid Fantasy sleeves (moreso the prototypes) and lightly brushed with white pearlescent acrylic and ZM Shine Pearl to give them a more organic look- also made a fin extension with the same material just to make her look a little more 'deluxe' lol

The Legendary Power Suit

You ever noticed those big shoulders Samus is always sporting on her suit? Yeah, I bet you have. It's basically her most iconic feature. It gives her an unmistakable silhouette.

But Samus isn't always portrayed with the big shoulders. Sometimes she has these flat shoulder pads instead, usually in the most basic form of her suit with no upgrades.

So what's the difference? I know, she always gets the shoulders as part of her Varia Suit upgrade, right? That makes sen- uhhh wait a sec, the Varia Suit in Zero Mission is just a recolor with the same flat shoulder pads. So what's the pattern then?

In other games released before ZM (Metroid II, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime), Samus seems to receive the round shoulders as part of her Varia Suit upgrade. This does not happen in Zero Mission, and Zero Mission is also the first game to attempt to explain where Samus's iconic suit design originates from in canon.

We can assume that when Samus received her power suit from the Chozo, they gave her a standard, modern model, tailored to her human physiology. Besides the fact that it was custom made for her, I imagine there's nothing too special about it. She was equipped with the standard tools of a Chozo warrior. And during her adventure in Zero Mission, she even finds the Varia upgrade, a heat and damage shield that gets added to her suit but doesn't drastically change its appearance.

At the end of Zero Mission, however, Samus is shot down in her ship by Space Pirates, and her power suit fails in the process, leaving her vulnerable. You may recall she needs to battle the Ruins Test in Chozodia in order to get her suit back... but this isn't the same as the suit she lost. This is something special.

Defeating the Ruins Test appears to be a sacred rite of passage that awards the challenger with the Legendary Power Suit, a tool of ancient Chozo design, even more powerful than Samus's old suit. It even allows her to interface with ancient upgrades that were incompatible with her suit of modern design. And most notably, the Legendary Power Suit features the large round shoulders that are iconic to Samus's appearance. This is the first time she dons her most well known suit!

From this point on, Samus completes her adventures wearing the armor of the ancient Chozo, a relic from a dying culture reserved for only the bravest warriors. We see evidence in other games that the large round shoulders are a symbol of Chozo warriors, in murals and statues.

Since Metroid Dread, we have gotten to see other Chozo Warriors in action, and interestingly, none of their suits share the appearance of the Legendary Power Suit. I can only assume that as long as the Chozo still live, their culture changes over time, and different suit designs come into fashion in modern times.

Imagine how someone like Raven Beak must feel seeing Samus roll up with her big bulky shoulders, a symbol of a bygone time in Chozo history. It must be like showing up to a wrestling match where your opponent is decked out in full medieval plate armor!

Without asking you to give away the plot of your book, what do you make of Taylor's decision to go with a stable of couture designers instead of Jessica Jones (w/ one exception) for her tour costumes? On the one hand, if I could snap my fingers and get a custom Zuhair Murad or Versace I would do it too. On the other hand, she's certainly had that ability for many many years now, and not done it before.

Taylor actually has (infrequently, admittedly) worn designer clothes on tours prior to Eras.

Her Valentino ballgown on the Speak Now Tour and the (iconic, incredible, 13/10, amazing, ultimate, superstar angel baby) "Style" bodysuit worn on the 1989 Tour was a Zuhair Murad Couture runway pull (the preferred "OOTW" sparkle jumpsuit for that tour was also ZM).

Obviously the extent to which designer wear shows up on the Eras Tour across all/most of the costuming is unprecedented, though. But if anything, this choice speaks to the inherent peculiarity of Taylor's approach to fashion - relative to her stature as a celebrity. By any other [female] pop star standards, a bevy of couture or high end designer concert costume attire is expected. It's the default. What makes Taylor's fashion so fascinating is how selective she is in what celebrity wealth standards she partakes in. And, as a result, her choices to what she does - and does not - do stand out that much more. And that's been a key part of her branding for as long as she's been around.

Without showing my hand - expect this to be talked about a lot in ... that big project. 😉
