Bethesda Softworks will close Redfall developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi RUSH and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, as well as Alpha Dog Games and Roundhouse Studios, according to a companywide email sent out by Microsoft Gaming president of game content and studios Matt Booty this morning.
Full email
Today I’m sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.
To double down on these franchises and invest to build new ones requires us to look across the business to identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success. This reprioritization of titles and resources means a few teams will be realigned to others and that some of our colleagues will be leaving us.
Here are the changes going into effect:
Arkane Austin – This studio will close with some members of the team joining other studios to work on projects across Bethesda. Arkane Austin has a history of making impactful and innovative games and it is a pedigree that everyone should be proud of. Redfall‘s previous update will be its last as we end all development on the game. The game and its servers will remain online for players to enjoy and we will provide make-good offers to players who purchased the “Hero” downloadable content.
Alpha Dog Studios – This studio will also close. We appreciate the team’s creativity in bringing DOOM to new players. Mighty DOOM will be sunset on August 7 and we will be turning off the ability for players to make any purchases in the game.
Tango Gameworks – Tango Gameworks will also close. We are thankful for their contributions to Bethesda and players around the world. Hi-Fi RUSH will continue to be available to players on the platforms it is today.
Roundhouse Games – The team at Roundhouse Games will be joining ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS). Roundhouse has played a key role in many of our recent game launches and bringing them into ZOS to work on The Elder Scrolls Online will mean we can do even more to grow the world that millions of players call home.
With this consolidation of our Bethesda studio teams, so that we can invest more deeply in our portfolio of games and new IP, a small number of roles across select Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will also be eliminated.
Those whose roles will be impacted will be notified today, and we ask that you please treat your departing colleagues with respect and compassion. We will provide our full support to those who are impacted in today’s notifications and through their transitions, including severance benefits informed by local laws.
These changes are not a reflection of the creativity and skill of the talented individuals at these teams or the risks they took to try new things. I acknowledge that these changes are also disruptive to the various support teams across ZeniMax and Bethesda that bring our games to market. We are making these tough decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games.
Bethesda remains one of the key pillars of Xbox with a strong portfolio of amazing games and thriving communities. As we look to the future, there is an impressive line-up of games on the horizon. In 2024 alone we have Starfield “Shattered Space,” Fallout 76 “Skyline Valley,” Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and The Elder Scrolls Online‘s “Golden Road.” As we align our plans and resources to best set ourselves up for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams across Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios, and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well-positioned to build new IP, explore new game concepts, and expand on our existing franchises.

On the 20th of March, seventeen years ago, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released in North America for PC and Xbox 360.
Taking place within the fictional province of Cyrodiil, the game's main story focuses on the player character's efforts to thwart a fanatical cult known as the Mythic Dawn that plans to open portal gates to a demonic realm known as Oblivion.
Tumblr media
The game continues the open-world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely. A perpetual objective for players is to improve their character's skills, which are numerical representations of certain abilities. Early in the game, seven skills are selected by the player as major skills for their character, with those remaining termed as minor skills.
Development for Oblivion began in 2002, directly after the release of Morrowind, opting for tighter pacing in gameplay and greater plot focus than in past titles. To design the graphics, Bethesda used an improved physics engine, high-dynamic-range lighting, procedural content generation tools that allowed developers to quickly create detailed terrains, and the Radiant AI system, which enabled non-player characters (NPCs) to make choices and engage in behaviors more complex than in past titles. The game features fully voiced NPCs—a first for the series.
Upon release, Oblivion was a critical and commercial success, winning a number of industry and publication awards. It was praised for its impressive graphics, expansive game world, and schedule-driven NPCs, and is considered one of the greatest games ever made.

With "Death Shroud!" and Wes Johnson's fundraiser, we passed a milestone with Fallout For Hope
Tumblr media
Please retweet this thread on Twitter…because this is about ALL of you and celebrating a major milestone. https://twitter.com/fchadfallout76/status/1664228503640743936?s=20
Fallout For Hope has passed a major milestone. $522,000 in 3 YEARS on Tiltify That’s no small number, no small impact. With Fallout gamers, Elder Scrolls gamers, and indeed gamers from everywhere all over the world YOU are making a difference.
This initiative was born from the belief that a community working together in one voice could achieve more than we ever could alone. Through a shared faith that we could make a difference, we did, we have and we’re just getting started.
We live in a cynical world, with social media weighted to encourage cynicism, fear, hopelessness, and division. And yet, this initiative is proof positive that hope endures, that we CAN put others before ourselves. I am so incredibly proud of all of you.
Over the years Fallout For Hope has been supported by an amazing team of sponsors from noblechairs, POPeART, Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios whose giveaways truly make a difference.
Massive thank you to all the developers, voice actors, celebrities, and reporters. I cannot, could not, make this happen without every one of our 614 team of staff and streamers from 86 countries around the world. Our causes from St. Jude, American Heart, Alzheimer's Association and Project Hope are indebted to you for all of your time and talent.
Lastly, I want every one of you to remember that whether you've raised $5, no dollars or thousands, YOU should be proud of you for standing up and getting involved.
War Never Changes. But hope? Hope can save a life.
Heart is full, ~ Kenneth Vigue (and now I'm taking a month-long break to work on the podcast lol)

If I’m thinking about how I’d tell a story within the confines of the ESO main quest, it has a lot to do with the idea of royalty/CHIM and nothing with it at all.
I somewhat hate that everyone’s interpretation of CHIM is a positive one. People don’t see the meaning within Morrowind and the 36 lessons, and it’s taken at face value. CHIM is domination, it’s imperialism, it’s oppression. I have no doubt it’s intended to be this, as it’s taught to Vivec by Molag Bal, in something confirmed to be assault. The two people who are said to have attained it is Vivec, who rules over Morrowind in a theocracy. And Talos, the conqueror. Morrowind has an anti-imperialist storyline, critiquing the empire for sending agents to destabilize the country, this is explicitly said in game. CHIM is looking at the whole scope of the world and still saying ‘I’, it’s sitting at the top of the tower, having no equal.
Which I think is part on MK making it out to be this cool thing on forums- part on the fact it’s written by white guys in a culture that hasn’t experienced these kinds of tragedies on a mass scale. Which is why I think ESO had the right ingredients to have a good story to me, but fell so flat. There is no challenging of the status quo. You have someone trying to legitimize their conquests by the Divine Right of Kings, through CHIM-el Abal, the Amulet of Kings. You have someone who manipulates their way into causing a cataclysm, to prop himself up to become the god of schemes. The game presents a difference, but the only one I truly see is the body count.
Coldharbour is accidentally subversive of this. You must progress through these quests, allying with all manner of people in Tamriel and Oblivion. You require the support of everyone, to collectively work towards a goal. (Of course, being an rpg, it’s your character is mostly doing all the work. The way I see media from Western countries speaking of heroism is a very rigidly individualist way of seeing societal change, which never ends up in much change at all.) It’s not as if I expect anything in these games to diverge from the safe route, We joke about Skyrim but I think it’s ESO out of all tes games that’s most focused on profit, being able to throw out as many dlc as Zenimax desires. I just like this setting in particular, and hope better of it even knowing it won’t happen.

Insatiable - Prologue
War.
War never changes. Three years ago the brotherhood of steel came here seeking an enemy and the foe they found proved to be too great.
Three years ago a mother emerged from vault 111, confused, scared, but overall, enraged. The path the wasteland took her down was long and dark and her integrity did not survive.
For by the time she arrived in the institute and found the truth, she had found a love for the wasteland. But not for its people or for the small bastions of civilization that dotted it, but for the chaos and lawlessness.
She followed along with the institutes directives, soon she had amassed a large band of allies and combined with her skills and the institutes full technologic might they led a full assault on the prydwen.
Its said not a soul of the brotherhoods ranks at the Boston airport on that day survived the ensuing massacre.
Elder Maxson was dead, the prydwen was captured and though last minute attempts were made to prevent liberty prime from coming into the institutes possession these proved futile.
Many of the sole survivors allies were disillusioned with her by the sheer brutality of the attack.
But it was too late, with the brotherhood gone no force could stand in the institutes way and they could rule the commonwealth with impunity.
No one knows what happened to the railroad, some say the institute snuffed them out but there are rumors that they continue to operate from an Island to the north.
Similarly Preston Garvey and the rest of the survivors from concord disappeared from sanctuary hills without a trace and with them so too did the last remnant of the commonwealth minutemen.
Soon the sole survivor of vault 111 found herself as director of the institute but she found that the intricacies of managing such an organization left her bored and she vanished.
Weeks later from the east came a horde of raiders from Nuka World, who came to lay claim to vast swathes of land within the commonwealth, forcing many settlements to pay tribute to them.
It soon came to light that the leader of these raiders was none other than The director of the institute herself and with their help she would now lead the institute to a new war.
For to the south the brotherhood of steel still remained in the capital wasteland. And with her raider army and institute technology they too would be eradicated.
Though their annihilation was not as total as it had been in the commonwealth the brotherhood was defeated and just as it had plundered its technology and industry from the enclave so too would its technology and industry be passed on now to the institute.
The Nuka-world raiders were transformed into a tool of the institutes conquest, they were gifted the captured prydwen and a fleet of vertibirds as well as a substantial arsenal of power armor and energy weapons.
As the institute thrived and grew both underground and in new surface installations across the east coast the sole survivor set out with her raider horde on an expedition west to search for any powers that might pose a threat to the institutes expansion.

The Fallout series has seen a significant increase in popularity lately, with more players joining in to play its titles on platforms like Steam and GOG.
This can be attributed to several factors, including attractive promotions and discounts and the successful launch of the highly acclaimed #Fallout TV series on #PrimeVideo. The TV adaptation has been praised for its original storyline and faithful representation of the source material.
In addition, the franchise is offering a sale and an upcoming update for #Fallout4, keeping up the momentum. Moreover, the series is now available on #Xbox #GamePass after #Microsoft acquired #Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, expanding its reach.

Just noticed that there's an article on Doom Delta.
The title is Huge canceled version of Doom now fully restored and available to play and other phrases associated (As in, from an official tweet) are "The abandoned, original version of Doom contained different weapons, enemies, characters and more" and "All of that material has been restored and is now fully playable".
I like that Doom Delta and any good mod gets coverage from sites that at some point would focus on Brutal Doom and mods based on memes and whatever.
But there's something about the word "restoring" that feels weird.
The mod itself technically has original content, since i'm not sure if there's actual visuals/art ever done for the characters for example (The Doom Bible had written details about them).
There were always mods about the Doom Bible but most weren't finished or as polished as Doom Delta (And some went with creative liberties as well).
"Early version" being singular is another thing because old Doom had various versions unless this is more about an overall idea based on various builds and the Doom Bible as a whole.
It's also a gameplay mod, which is not the same as a TC or even a game under a version of the engine, if it were called a "restored cancelled game" or something in that line.
And more importantly:
John Romero himself may still have Doom development assets to share but ZeniMax pretty much told him to stop.
I also vaguely recall a post about the Quake 2 remaster referring to the remastering of the models as "restoring".
Maybe it's something to do with stuff like "lost media" and "preservation" becoming more noticeable topics and a side effect is it not feeling as genuine as it should be.
People start to like the idea of it but how how you should invest in the topic itself.
Part of why people hate Limited Run games because they claim to be about preservation when their model (And the name) seem to say otherwise. And using the phrase "i also vaguely recall" yet again but didn't that Clocktower remaster/remake by WayForward had someone talk about "preservation" in a trailer despite the subject being a new version of an old game where they change the art style?

In the wee hours of the morning following the Rusty Pick Grand Opening, a poker game is interrupted from a threat from above. As Chad and Roper race against time as ZAX gains access to a larger network, Commander Johns fights for his life inside the Nuclear Winter Simulation in Vault 51. The sun is setting and before this final match is through, winning will come at a great cost.
These episodes are in loving memory to long time Bethesda Game Studios developer Ferret Baudoin, who recorded his lines prior to his untimely passing. His family has graciously allowed us to use them posthumously and it is fitting that in these episodes he will save the day, one last time.
The remainder of our season ad revenue from these episodes will be benefiting the global crisis and humanitarian work of Project Hope. Please support our fundraiser: https://donate.tiltify.com/+fallout-for-hope-ukrainerelief/chad-a-fallout-76-story-podcast
