فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى الْعَبْدِ وَالْحُرِّ، وَالذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى، وَالصَّغِيرِ وَالْكَبِيرِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَمَرَ بِهَا أَنْ تُؤَدَّى قَبْلَ خُرُوجِ النَّاسِ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ‏

We spend an entire month abstaining from food and drinks so that we can feel the pain of those Muslims brethren who sometimes go days without these basic necessities. The Holy month of Ramadan culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr – a celebration and reward for an entire month of patience and brotherliness. For the poor and needy to be included in this celebration, each Muslim is under an obligation to pay a certain amount in kind or in food, which is known as Fitrana. According to an agreed upon Hadith: “None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Tirmidhi: 2515) This Hadith is a testament that in addition to fulfilling certain obligations to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), a Muslim also has to cater to his fellow brothers and sisters. This is why it is only a fair demand on part of the wealthy, to expect them to set aside a certain amount for those who are unable to afford the little things in life. Islam is a religion of inclusivity and therefore, at this joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, it is important they those who are not as blessed as the rest of us, should also be able to be a part of this blissful occasion. When to give Fitrana? The payment of Fitrana becomes obligatory after the sunset on the evening of the last fast of Ramadan. Once the moon of Shawwal is sighted, each person who is obliged to pay Fitrana, must pay it forward, before the Eid day. Who should give Fitrana? People who have reached puberty, are sane, not needy and poor should pay Fitrana. If a family has one breadwinner and 6 dependents, he should pay for each one of his dependents. How much to pay? Each year there is a set amount that needs to be given, it fluctuates due to the changing socio-economic conditions. Fitrana is measured as three and a half kilogram of wheat, barley, rice or any staple edible item for each person. If you don’t want to pay in terms of food, one can also pay in cash. The amount of money is settled through a conversion of the three and a half kilos of food into money. The minimum amount to be paid in the United States is U$10.00 person, Who deserves it? One can distribute money to the deserving people and the preference for Fitrana should be as follows: relatives, poor neighbors, the needy in general and the collectors of Zakat. According to a Hadith narrated by Abu Musa (RadiyAllahu ‘anhu): The Prophet (SallAllahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) said, “When the people of Ash’ari tribe ran short of food during the holy battles, or the food of their families in Madinah ran short, they would collect all their remaining food in one sheet and then distribute it among themselves equally by measuring it with a bowl. So, these people are from me, and I am from them”. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 2486) If during times of need each Muslim is expected to help fellow Muslims out, one should also remember to include these brethren in times of joy. Narrated 'Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported: The Apostle of Allah stood up on the day of 'Id al-Fitr and observed prayer. And he commenced the prayer before the sermon. He then delivered the sermon. When the Apostle of Allah had finished (the sermon) he came down from (the pulpit), and made his way to the women and exhorted them (to do good acts), and he was leaning on the hand of Bilal. Bilal had stretched his cloth in which women were throwing alms. I (one of the narrators) said to 'Ata' (the other narrator): It must be Zakat on the day of Fitr. He ('Ata') said: No. It was alms (which) they were giving on that occasion, and a woman gave her ring, and then others gave, and then others gave. I said to 'Ata': Is It right now for the Imam to come to the women when he has finished (his address to the men) that he should exhort them (to good deeds)? ZAKAT-UL-FITR TO BE PAID BEFOR “EID-UL-FITR PRAYER

The following Hadith also proves that Zakat Al-Fitr is not just a lending hand to the poor and needy but rather a favor we do to ourselves to remove any sins we have committed during Ramadan. 

Ibn ’Abbas (Radiyullah) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) enjoined Zakat ul-Fitr on the one who fasts (i.e., fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. 

It is accepted as Zakah for the person who pays it before the Eid prayer and it is Sadaqah (i.e., voluntary charity) for the person who pays it after the Eid prayer.’ (Abu Dawud)

It is suggested to pay US$ 10.00 person, minimum, but you can pay as much as you can afford to pay. May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala accept it, Ameen, and reward you in both the world, Thumma Ameen.

Zakat Al-Fitr is an obligation upon every Muslim, grown-up or a child regardless of the gender, as long as they have what is sufficient to feed them for a day or longer. The head of the family pays for every single member of the family.

It is essential to give Zakat Al-Fitr to those who are eligible to receive it. The recipients consist of the eight group mentioned in Surah at-Tawba, Ayah 60 (Check it out for yourself).

You can start giving Zakat Al-Fitr in the last few days of Ramadan and it must be completed before the Eid Ul-Fitr prayers are conducted; failing to do so invalidates your Zakat. 

It is narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is accepted zakaah, and whoever gives it after the prayer, it is a kind of charity.” (Abu Dawood).

In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 

“At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we used to give it at a rate of one saa’ of food, or one saa’ of dates, or one saa’ of barley, or one saa’ of cheese, or one saa’ of raisins…” 

Zakat Al-Fitr is an obligation upon every Muslims that has to be completed in the assigned time. This is a generous practice of Islam where it connects the rich with the poor, and the poor with the poorer, thus eliminating poverty and reducing the disparity gap between the rich and the poor. This form of charity ensures no poor person goes hungry during Ramadan and more importantly increases our iman towards Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.
